public golf

I'm not looking forward to the next few months

Question:

I played it year before last, 2000, in the spring.  Yep, that would be a haul to get up there to River Hills.  Good luck!  My daughter is now on her way to Denver (I hope), so I probably won’t be getting down there any more.  Except for the mosquitoes and humidity, not a bad place to live.  The house my daughter had there, for 110K would sell for about 400K here in DC area. PZ

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dave Pharaoh’s was awful the one time I played it.  We tried to get our greens fees back.  Not a bad layout, but the fairways were a mix of mud and weeds.  Off the fairway, just mud.  Bad experience. When was that?  They’ve been under new ownership for the last couple of years and have been pouring some money into the course.  I played there about a year ago shortly after they had laid a bunch of sod in some of the fairways.  Sometimes the ball would land in the small spaces between the individual squares so we’d just roll it.  But the saving grace was that the greens were in pretty good shape.  Then I played about six months ago and the fairways had grown in pretty well, but a few of the greens were kind of shabby.  And you’re right about the rough–on a couple of holes at least they could be best described as mud flats.  This IS the course I referred to in my original post as the over-priced semi-private club.  The bad thing is that even in any one of those states, it’s in better shape than the navy course is at present.  Hopefully that wont be true in the not too distant future. I don’t think River Hills is that expensive.  No initiation fee. Just a thought. My daughter lived in that area, two blocks from the WalMart, so it was really convenient for her and her husband.  They are moving up to Denver, though, so gave up their membership. Well if you’re familiar with Corpus, then you know it’s shape is kind of like a large banana.  Calallen (where RiverHills is) is at the far northern end and I live in Flour Bluff which is the southern most end (excluding Padre Island).  So it’s not a place I could get too after work to play on weekdays which is the only way I could justify paying a membership. Corpus is kind of bleak for public golf, isn’t it? You got that right!  The topic of a new muni comes up all the time and there are a couple of city councilmen pushing it.  The other possibility is that Padre Island is poised for some major development if the channel to the gulf is opened. For a city that depends a lot on tourism–you’d think they’d go after the typically affluent types that play resort golf. We’ll see. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The front nine of my home course will be shut down this Monday–the rest of the course to follow in a few weeks.  That means either fighting with the masses for tee times to play slooooooooooooow golf on one of our muni’s, or forking out for an over-priced semi-private club in the area.  Neither one is a pleasant prospect.  I played nine holes today and it took damn near 2.5 hours.  That just ain’t my kind of golf. I guess it will be worth it when we get our refurbished course back in the fall (maybe).  They are totally rebuilding about half the greens and reseeding the rest. The course will be about 150 yards longer from the back tees–don’t know about the whites.  But I don’t care as long as we don’t have to play bump-and-run shots over the moguls on the greens anymore! Hot diggity: 36 holes on a January day

Question:

I got pretty fed up reading about how so many of you were getting out, enjoying this global warming, knowing that I’d been missing out.  Finally the day arrived when I was able to get out and enjoy some of it myself. That day was today. Played White Columns this morning, said to be the best public golf course in metro Atlanta.  I’d never played it before.  Dang if I didn’t play the last ten holes in 2-over (giving myself a mullie on 18).  The first eight holes? Uh….not sure.  We were playing a litte hawk game (best ball), but it was probably a fairly average 7 over or thereabouts.  Nothing great, nothing terrible.  Showed early signs of promising play when I stuck a 3-wood on the green of the first par three (#2, as I recall).  Had it right on line, but it was all I had to get on the front.  The pin was back, leaving a 60-footer.  But I two-putted and won the hole for our side.  God it’s nice to putt on perfect (and quick) greens.  These were like pool tables (except not as flat). Birdie in the corner pocket.  Cha-ching! Heck, I wanted to keep playing when we finished, but I couldn’t play there (we were guests) so I went to the course where I play most of my golf and got on quickly there.  Should have quit after 18, as the magic was gone. But boy, oh, boy, it was sure good to get out.  There were two guys with whom I played today — one in each round — wearing shorts.  Shorts in January.  I was in slacks and burning up.  Felt like it got up to near 80 today.  Wow. My dawgs are sure barkin’ now, though.  It’s been a while since I’ve done 36 holes in a day, and it’s been years and years since I"ve played two rounds at two different courses on the same day.  It’s surely never happened before this early in the year. Love the new irons and fairway woods.  That’s the best damn 3 wood I’ve ever had.  I smoked it every time I hit it. Response:

Randy usually does too (does it ever really get cold in Atlanta), but the freak snowstorm they got down there threw everything off for awhile.  Now those of us that live a little more northern who rarely, if ever, get to play golf in January, this little taste of spring has been great. Chris

Well, I think a lot of us midwesters won’t be tormenting you for a while, since there’s a big storm moving through, and where I am in Iowa we’re told we’ll have 4-8" of snow by Thursday night.  We’ve dodged a couple storms but this one looks big enough it’ll be pretty hard for it to miss. Might have to wait all the way until March before we can play again! I am amused how a lot of the people getting out have been doing 27 or 36 holes.  I’ve been out three times this January, and it was nine holes each time.  There’s only so much putting on greens that roll about as well as a cobblestone path that I can take before I have to call it quits to preserve what little confidence I still have in my putter! — If the RIAA sold CPUs, they’d be bribing Congress to make overclocking a felony

Mini Michigan RSG

Question:

Where else do you get great greens, two 18’s, no waiting, tee times anytime you call, $15 walking weekdays or *unlimited* yearly golf for $630 (including weekends).  It also has a driving range, is only 11 miles from my house and I got my first Ace there last year. Please don’t tell anyone about HG – we like it just the way it is.

No, don’t get me wrong, I play there… I learned to play on that course, I was on a junior league there…  Just that course is right in the middle of Dunham Hills and the Magestic.  It is not hard to find a two for one pass at Dunham, that is a course that some one that is not from the area should expirience.  Nothing to do about the Magestic’s prices, but it is one hell of  a course… almost a better choice than Timber Trace.

Response:

David, To put things in perspective.  At Timber Trace, I played from the Whites and Bruce played from the Golds – two tees back.  That was great fun and evened things out a bit.  I think that that can be a better handicap than strokes.  It didn’t put as much pressure on me to knock a long one and kept my ball in better position. Regarding Bruce, someday he will be at an RSG event and will bring his game.  Besides being great fun to play with he also gave me a couple of mini lessons on chipping.  I have since taken that to the course and have saved a minimum of two a side. It sure is neat when you have someone that knows what they are doing explain and take the time to show you what to do. Anyhow, thanks again Bruce. New strategy – Bruce is a hack.  In order to bet me you will have to give him 4 a side at any RSG event – even money.  Retirement may be closer than I think. :-) Don – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sorry David, But, they would catch on sooner or later about collecting in US and paying in CDN. Well, hopefully it would be much later – like after I am out of the parking lot!!! One more thing about Bruce – how about his focus?  Man he can do what he wants when he wants.  There is no doubt that with the pressure on that others wouldn’t stand a chance. He knows the shots he needs to play – he will be the first to say that some of them need a bit of practise, though. But if he did practise and started playing on a regular basis, I’d be looking for 4** strokes a side. **( Note how the bargaining for strokes has started high – I’ll get to the arthristis/bad back ploy later in negotiations!)

Cool golf story

Question:

See, it is good to get out of the house from time to time.  : ) Cool Story. T

Yeah, that was neat….  You never know who you’ll bump into. Speaking of golf and guitar related news, did you know Vince Gill is a wicked golfer?  He’s turned down numerous offers from the PGA to join the tour, as he already has a million dollar career as a great singer/guitarist.  Word has it that he’s THAT good – he beats the sh** out of the pros on the tour when they get together privately and play a round of golf. I have played two rounds of golf with Larry Corryell… This doesn’t seem to impress too many people though. I will furnish details if prompted. Mark – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I just finished playing a round of golf with a buddy, who told me this story: A few days ago, he went to a public golf course here in Kansas City to play a round by himself.  (Note to those who don’t play – To speed up play, the course starter will usually make a single player play with another group, or another single player.)  So the starter says to my buddy, "We have another single player, do you mind playing as a twosome?"  You can’t really say no, so they end up playing together.  After a couple holes, my buddy asks the guy what he does for a living.  The guy says, in an English accent, "I’m a drummer in a rock band."  My buddy dismissed this at first, thinking the guy was full of it.  So after a couple more holes, my buddy asks the what the name of the band is, and the guy says, "Bad Company"!  The guy turned out to be Simon Kirke!  My buddy and his girl ended up taking him out to dinner, and then going to the concert that night with two free backstage passes! And the bum didn’t even call me!?!  Oh well, it appears that Simon Kirke likes to keep a low profile.  But he did say they exchanged personal phone #’s and Simon said to call him if they ever get to his hometown, and Simon would buy my buddy a round of golf and dinner! Jerry P.S. My buddy shot a round of 84, Simon said his score was one off from that, but he wouldn’t say which way! (My buddy said probably 83.)

Question:

Looking for you opinion!  The public golf course here in Northern Michigan made a new rule, which directly affects us "Annual Greens Fee Players (yearly membership players)".  The new rule states that if you are an Annual Greens Fee Player, you can not reserve a Tee Time between the hours of 8 AM and 12 Noon on a weekend..!!  The reasoning is to open up tee time slots for Green Fee players, to generate cash revenue.   I am interested on your thoughts and if you know of any other course that has adopted this rule.

It depends on whether or not the Annual Greens Fee Players have an organized association.  If so, that association might let the course know that it is in peril of losing the guaranteed monies generated by their group.  The problem is; they might welcome it. For those who only play on the weekend mornings, it might be wise to just drop out of the annual fee…there’s no benefit. Bummer!

Response:

If they put that rule in place after you paid, then I think it stinks. If you knew about the rule when you bought your membership, then it is what it is. At my club, I expect to have to work around greens-fees players.  It’s a semi-private club.  Those greens fees bring in a huge chunk of change each year, in the absence of which my membership costs would be much higher. It’s six of one, half-a-dozen of another. If I were you, if possible, I would find a course that gears itself towards membership play.  It seems you’ve already paid this year’s dues, so this year is toast, but I would look for another course. My course opened up as public, but has always worked towards eventually going private, and has never advertised for public greens fee play, it has always emphasized memberships.  The whole orientation of the operation is for the members(7 day advance tee times vs 3 days for public, morning weekend tee times, etc.). They want revenue from greens fee players?  Unless there are only twenty of you who bought memberships, what would they say if all those memberships walked away?  Quite frankly, I would be telling them to go gung-ho after the geens fee players because no one you ever get a chance to talk to will ever buy a membership at that course.  Let’s see how much revenue comes in when they can *only* get revenue from greens fees. I’d seriously consider finding another club.  You might pay a little bit more, but you wouldn’t have to deal with something like this.  This sounds like utter crap to me. I hope you didn’t pay an initiation fee to this place.  If you did I would raise some holy hell and not stop.  If you paid an initation fee and they turn around and give Joe on the street the prime times, this course is looking for a battle with its best customers.  Sounds to me like this course’s business sense is a little off, or else like I said, there’s only 20 memberships sold to begin with.

Response:

We have a similar problem at our course.  Because of mismanagement, the club has decided to decrease the members tee times to increase revenue.  Not only that, members can only schedule a tee time a week in advance, a  non-member can schedule anytime and the club will even put non-members in the reserved members times.  We’re hoping that when the club gets solidly on it’s feet again, this will change. So, the only thing I can tell is that it does suck and it happens at other courses.  But then again, I do have "the privilege" of eating in the club house and having to pay a $40 a month chit…..  :-( Bryan — Bryan Berguson RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/bergusonb.htm

Your best bet is to gather together other "members" and complain, en masse, to the management.  It’s (IMO) unreasonable to inconvenience those who have paid a large sum up front. If they don’t relent (and there’s no reason why they *have* to), vote with your feet and join another club.  En masse. This is common.  I’d say that 9 out of 10 courses that I’ve played that have both private memberships and public access have this rule.  I will say that for the course to change the policy after accepting your fees is bad business.  The simple truth is that for these type of courses the greens fee paying customers provide a lot more cash than the "quasi-members". -gk-

I guess I just don’t get the concern.  $425 greens fee and cart.  That means the club takes in $170K plus the 20 K. You guys are going broke!  Michigan has a season from May to October, 6 months.  If you play twice a week your cost is something like $17 a round.  Sounds like a real bargain to me.  BTW, you never said what the weekend tee time rates were. Either this is one goat track or it won’t be around for long.  With this revenue stream I don’t see how they can maintain the course.  Maybe they need to up the Annual rates for those who want an early morning weekend time.  My club has a weekday membership and a "full" membership, with substantially higher fees for full play.  The retired folks can play golf until they fall down, at a reasonable rate, and those who work and need weekend access can get it. Nathan, I forgot to mention that you are right in that the parking lot is probably empty on weekend mornings.  If all they made was 20 grand, they aren’t getting much extra play.  They have roughly 6000 tee times available on the weekends over the season.  Assume just threes players per time slot, they  can start 18K rounds. How do you get 6000 weekend tee times? At 8 groups per hour, 6000 tee times is 14 hours a day over six months – 8 X 14 X 2 X 26 = 5824. At 32 players per hour, 500 people take almost 16 hours.

My calculation was 8 hours per weekend, 25 weekends, 60 minute hours, 8 min starts  and 4 players. thus  (8 hours  x 60 minutes x 25 weekends) = 12,000 minutes 12,000 minutes / 8 minute starts = 1500 tee times 1500 tee times x 4 players = 6000 starts.  This is best case potential. Regarding the 500 – 600  That was for the season.  Consider: $20,000 divided by say $35 per head per start = 571 people.  Depending on what they actually charge and considering where it is, the price will probably be between $25 and $40, the count will vary. Joe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – How do you get 6000 weekend tee times? At 8 groups per hour, 6000 tee times is 14 hours a day over six months – 8 X 14 X 2 X 26 = 5824. At 32 players per hour, 500 people take almost 16 hours. They obviously only managed to start  500 – 600 people. Joe

Response:

One day weekends? Somebody once told me about a new golf course that offered really cheap play to attract players. Everybody wanted to play there but the place went in the dumper really quickly as they didn’t do the math when they built the parking lots. At a minimum, the parking lots need to handle about six hours of tee times.

Tom, The original scenario was limited play for members between 8 am and Noon Saturday and Sunday.  That’s 8 hours per weekend. Joe – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – One day weekends? Try Public Golf Handicap (www.publicgolfhandicap)  They have been up non stop since 1996 Tim Howard – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m sure that I’m not the only one that uses nethandicap.com to keep track of my handicap.  Does anyone know what has happened with it?  I haven’t been able to access it for at least a week and my emails to the webmaster keep getting bounced back to me.  It is, by far, the best online handicap tracking system that I’ve found and I’d like to continue using it. Yahoo offers a free online handicap service.  A nice way to track your scores over time, even though this will not function  as an "official" handicap. http://golf.sports.yahoo.com/tracker Bill in Clearwater
