Question:
I played it year before last, 2000, in the spring. Yep, that would be a haul to get up there to River Hills. Good luck! My daughter is now on her way to Denver (I hope), so I probably won’t be getting down there any more. Except for the mosquitoes and humidity, not a bad place to live. The house my daughter had there, for 110K would sell for about 400K here in DC area. PZ
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dave Pharaoh’s was awful the one time I played it. We tried to get our greens fees back. Not a bad layout, but the fairways were a mix of mud and weeds. Off the fairway, just mud. Bad experience. When was that? They’ve been under new ownership for the last couple of years and have been pouring some money into the course. I played there about a year ago shortly after they had laid a bunch of sod in some of the fairways. Sometimes the ball would land in the small spaces between the individual squares so we’d just roll it. But the saving grace was that the greens were in pretty good shape. Then I played about six months ago and the fairways had grown in pretty well, but a few of the greens were kind of shabby. And you’re right about the rough–on a couple of holes at least they could be best described as mud flats. This IS the course I referred to in my original post as the over-priced semi-private club. The bad thing is that even in any one of those states, it’s in better shape than the navy course is at present. Hopefully that wont be true in the not too distant future. I don’t think River Hills is that expensive. No initiation fee. Just a thought. My daughter lived in that area, two blocks from the WalMart, so it was really convenient for her and her husband. They are moving up to Denver, though, so gave up their membership. Well if you’re familiar with Corpus, then you know it’s shape is kind of like a large banana. Calallen (where RiverHills is) is at the far northern end and I live in Flour Bluff which is the southern most end (excluding Padre Island). So it’s not a place I could get too after work to play on weekdays which is the only way I could justify paying a membership. Corpus is kind of bleak for public golf, isn’t it? You got that right! The topic of a new muni comes up all the time and there are a couple of city councilmen pushing it. The other possibility is that Padre Island is poised for some major development if the channel to the gulf is opened. For a city that depends a lot on tourism–you’d think they’d go after the typically affluent types that play resort golf. We’ll see. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dave, You ever check out River Hills? My daughter belonged there. Not a bad layout, except for a couple of strange holes. Nope…never have. For one thing it’s private. If I had stayed with my last company, I probably would have managed an invite eventually. I’m considering joining Pharaoh’s until the base course reopens. I need to go see what kind of shape it’s in. You should call the pro at Padre Isles and encourage him to come up with some sort of military discount plan. :)
Hmmm. Not a bad idea…it might fly. I’ll give him a call. Dave Clary/Corpus Christi,TX Home: http://home.stx.rr.com/dclary Never Forget: http://www.politicsandprotest.org RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/claryd.htm

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The front nine of my home course will be shut down this Monday–the rest of the course to follow in a few weeks. That means either fighting with the masses for tee times to play slooooooooooooow golf on one of our muni’s, or forking out for an over-priced semi-private club in the area. Neither one is a pleasant prospect. I played nine holes today and it took damn near 2.5 hours. That just ain’t my kind of golf. I guess it will be worth it when we get our refurbished course back in the fall (maybe). They are totally rebuilding about half the greens and reseeding the rest. The course will be about 150 yards longer from the back tees–don’t know about the whites. But I don’t care as long as we don’t have to play bump-and-run shots over the moguls on the greens anymore!
