Fred Couples – What a swing.

Question:

Steve, I would highly recommend that you watch Ernie Els closely.  There is another great effortless swing. Luke Lang – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I dont know if Fred Couples has changed something or if suddenly the scales have fallen from my eyes, but in watching a bit of the Bob Hope Classic on Sky TV here in the UK last weekend, I found myself mesmerised by his swing. I know he has always had a good, no great swing but maybe I never appreciated how great until now. The way that man hits the ball is truly a thing of beauty, I feel like it really is poetry in motion. Others may hit the ball with more ferocity (TW) or more mechanically (eg Faldo) but no one approaches the appearance of effortlessness with which he appears to send the ball into the far distance.

Response:

Really, his ball miraculously(sp)stayed up-a truly divine intervention testing Freddy-and he fishes out a ball that he sees in the water-he probably just wanted to see what kind it was. I read that in the Bob Hope-Freddy really won the tourney on the 9th of the final round, when his tee shot was heading way out of bounds when it hit the announcer-Roger Maltbies cart and bounced back into bounds. He went on to make a birdie-when he was facing a sure 6-I can just imagine his reaction was nothing more than a raise of the eyebrow and a empty stare off into the distance.

Response:

His swing is someting else, nirvana describes it best,I wonder what he is thinking at the point of impact,or if his mind set is off somewhere in Couples  La La Land. His mannerisms around the course reflect this same sort of easiness also-I have noticed.Truely amazing.

The apparent leisureliness with which he plays caused Greg Norman to say that "Freddie plays golf like he’s on a ‘walkabout.’ " For Australians, a "walkabout" is wandering an area with no other objective in mind than seeing what’s there. It’s not a results-oriented activity. Never got that feeling more than when watching Freddie on the bank of  #12 at Augusta after being miraculously saved ….. just played his shot and then flicked another ball up out of the water with his wedge and gave it a look before casually moving on. It is amazing the guy has back problems- there is no forced effort anywhere… Dan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I dont know if Fred Couples has changed something or if suddenly the scales have fallen from my eyes, but in watching a bit of the Bob Hope Classic on Sky TV here in the UK last weekend, I found myself mesmerised by his swing. Can I say at this point that I am European (British) and not normally given over to adoration of others especially highly paid professional golfers. However I do love the game and like to see it played well. I often wonder if the Japanese Golfers who never play on a course, but spend their time at the range hitting balls are trying to reach some sort of golfing nirvana where every ball they hit is hit perfectly and with no apparent effort. If there is such a thing as a golfing nirvana I think Fred has got there first.
