Question:
I’m not disagreeing with your sentiment regarding Tiger, but only with part of what you said. I get a couple hours of the Tour Championship on Saturday and Sunday…nothing on Thursday, no "other" event, no European event, no ladies, no seniors. I don’t think I am alone either. It seems you have a luxury, Joseph, that you assume others also have. Oh, GIVE ME A BREAK. The Golf Channel is free on our local cable system, and a DSS dish is nowadays far from being a "luxury." If you want to watch golf on television, it’s there. Get off your butt and do something positive about it.
Holy shit, what an asshole! Read my damn words, not your twist. I don’t get your "local cable system" here. I don’t want to buy a dish nor was I complaining in the least. I was agreeing with you and only pointing out a small point. I don’t want to watch any more golf that I get now. I simply said that you made one large assumption…and you did. You know, I have a few names on my "most LIKE to play with" list, but you and Frostback top my "least like to" list. Words that come to mind are little respect or common courtesy, abrasive, opinionated, lacking grace of any kind and just plain no fun! You are a big loudmouth, hiding behind your keyboard. Face up to your error and apologize, you idiot. F*** you, pal. Bruce RSG Roll Call: http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/newmanb.htm

That’s a novel idea, instead of televising the front runners or the ones that made a good shot here or there, and put the camera on the guys battling for last place, then you will dicover a new meaning for boring. Not me. First of all, It ain’t over yet – he’s only on the 4th hole as I am writing this. I don’t have a problem watching a player dominate his sport, whether it’s Ali, Chamberlain, Jordan, Nicklaus or Woods. That’s the goal everyone’s trying to reach – it’s nice to see it happen first hand. And it won’t last forever. Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of players (such as Norman, Miller, Watson, Duval and others) appear unbeatable for a relatively short period. Thus far, it’s always been a temporary situation. — The RSG-Memphis Webpage is at: http://home.midsouth.rr.com/joecartpath/rsgtn.html RSG Roll Call: http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/reedj.htm

I’m sitting at work, following the scoreboard on pgatour.com, and now wondering whether it’s worth going home to catch tv coverage on abc… since it might get preempted by the nauseating blanket coverage of the flight 990 crash (flashback to the British, here… anyone remember being as peeved as I was that it got bumped for the Kennedy crash?) If it does get bumped, it may go to ESPN, but I don’t have cable. Coverage is slated to start in 10 minutes or so. If anyone can let me know the situation, I’d appreciate it greatly. Thanks! Before you buy.

It seems to me that the problem is not Tiger’s excellent and consistent play (good luck to him) because that is always good to see – he’s not exactly boring to watch. But I too am a disappointed viewer, and that’s because so few of the other ’stars’ are up there challenging. If Tiger was a couple of shots ahead of Duval, Singh, Mickelson and Love, you might imagine some sort of contest today. But maybe those guys were adversely affected by the traumas and the extra travelling this week – none of them are really performing on song. Maybe it’s what I suggested in another place – that Tiger has them all psyched out, I don’t know. But it’s not Tiger winning which is disappointing – but the performance of the others is. Maybe the US Tour will have to make extra effort to spice things up by enticing Sergio and Monty over to tackle Tiger (although Monty, too, has shown signs in the past of falling in a heap when head to head with TW). So, bring on Sergio! (PS. I’m also disappointed in the parallel European event because none of our best is in contention, albeit Sergio is 4 shots back of Reteif Goosen who is an excellent and underrated golfer, but not European of course. I had also been hoping that Monty would make it seven tour wins this week but he’s six shots back and needs a miracle.) Stan — Stan The Man +++Naked Under This Macintosh+++ If replying, DELETE X
Response:
Boring, nah! Like Stan has said, I wish the others top names could be up there, that would give us a spin-tingling veiw watching them tough it out for every hole. But, what truly amazes me, is that Tiger doesn’t seem like his old self. Such as, no more fiery fist-pumps (now I really miss those), no more miraculous putts, just strong steady, hole by hole golf. And this style seems to be working. Going into the final round with a 2 or 3 shot lead, Tiger will be tough to beat. He has proven he is a good finisher, when he has the lead. Coleman
Response:
By the way, my 7 year old knows who Tiger Woods is. She does not golf, nor does anyone else in the family besides me (the Dad of the household). Tiger certainly is known and has drawn people to the game that would not otherwise follow it. I believe Tiger is excellent and great for the game. That’s the way I see it. The percentage of golf fans like you, who turn off when Tiger is winning, is probably about the same as the percentage of non-fans who turn on only when Tiger is winning, because he is golf’s only superstar under 50 (i.e., non-fans of the sport know who he is). That means that the actual ratings will be much higher, because, believe it or not, there are many times more non-fans than fans of golf. I just appreciate good golf. Sure, it is more exciting with Tiger battling a few big names, but it is the quality of the golf that I most enjoy. I can have just as much enjoyment with Tiger leading by 10. It all goes in cycles though, so don’t worry about it. There was Duval 6 months ago and there will be others riding a hot streak. ALso, Tiger will no doubt have his slumps, too. Right now, though, it seems to be going pretty much his way. Bruce RSG Roll Call: http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/newmanb.htm

Keeping a golf game as finely tuned as Tiger’s is right now is a bit like running on a knife edge. It’s exciting to watch while it works, and the suspense of "when will it end" is exciting too. Dominating play in the PGA Tour is almost unheard of. Enjoy it while it lasts. Besides, I don’t remember any Tiger win from this year that was a "walk in the park" on Sunday. Someone has caught up to him mid-round almost every time. -joseph

If you don’t like excellence, by all means turn it off. Judging by the ratings, however, few agree with you. Even fellow pro golfers don’t begrudge him. They realize how "star power" leads to high TV ratings, and ever more money in the pockets of even the lowliest among them. Tiger’s getting rich, but lots of others are benefiting from his presence on the tour. . . . Now, if only a couple of others, such as Duval or Mickelson, would rise up to consistently challenge him, we’d really have something! Like Palmer, Nicklaus and Player. For years and years these three monopolized the majors. But, what ratings their battles generated! ~~Fred

I just enjoy watching good golf and Tiger often provides it especially now that he’s improved his iron play. It’s not his fault that no one is better. Monty dominates the European tour the same way Tiger dominates the PGA Tour but I wouldn’t say that he’s bad for golf either, although there are a lot of Americans who would say otherwise. If Tiger wasn’t playing anymore someone else would dominate the tour. It’s always been that way. Anyone else turning off the TV lately because every tournament seems like another Tiger rout? Golf ratings say you’re the only one. Tiger is in a streak that’s for sure. I’m sure many non golfer types are watching to see Tiger, while many others like yourself are tuning out. I’ll be watching tomorrow. And, it’s not like it hasn’t been exciting. The PGA was outstanding, and last week at Disney went down to the last hole, and a 40 foot two putt that Tiger needed. Even the World Series at Akron, I think he only won by one. So, the excitment is there, even if the ending has been the same. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Anyone else turning off the TV lately because every tournament seems like another Tiger rout?
