My 11 yr. old nephew was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He is very interested in playing sports and is concerned about his ability to do so. Timothy, There was a posting regarding whether professional atheletes or similar laymen who have been athletic would be more motivational for you nephew. There is an organization called International Diabetic Athletes Association (URL somewhere). Within its ranks are numerous very impressive stories, although they are rarely the multimillion dollar variety. If this sort of story would be of interest, I would be happy to pass on my experience swimming through HS and college through to the ranks of NCAA championships. Not boasting, but I survived/excelled while being Type I diabetic. Jay

I don’t know his name, but there is a professional football player with diabetes. He even has a book out called "Necessary Toughness". You can find it through the ADA web page. The address for the book is: http://merchant.diabetes.org:80/prd.i/pgen/adabooks/4XUNRU46M4S12K840… Wythe

I’ve had diabetes for 18 years, I’m 38 now. I run 5 miles a day, mountain bike over some pretty tough terrain, race mountain bikes, ski, etc… There’s no reason your nephew can’t do his sports. It will demand that he get in tune with his body and his diabetes. He’ll need to know when to make adjustments and how exercise affects insulin absorption rates. Encourage him to do his gig! js – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My 11 yr. old nephew was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Hi Tim: Add: Jackie Robinson (baseball) Catfish Hunter (baseball) Bobby Clarke (hockey) All the best, JayWesoff Jackie Robinson did not become diabetic (TypeII) until many years after he retired from playing. I think that it would be more motivational for this young man to hear about people that are more similar to him. Kristen
Just because an athelete retires does not diminish the stature he achieved. Jackie Robinson became active in civil rights and business. He was a fine role model all his life. I don’t retract his name.

There are many diabetics who play pro. Not just Hockey, but Foot ball, Base ball, Basket ball and other sports. Even supposed to be one race car driver however I can’t verify any of them…. I’m not an athletic and thus don’t follow the threads as closely as I should. Might have something though… Please stand by for cut and paste operations…. This is extracted from a file that is copyright COMPUSERVE and the diabetes forum thereon I’ve seriously deleted names here so as to keep with "Fair Use" and of course the file contains many many catagories I haven’t included here such as Writers, Composers (Andrew Loyd Webber for example) Politicans and others Arthur Ashe — Tennis Ty Cobb — Baseball James "Buster" Douglas — Boxing Nikolai Drozdetsky — Soviet Hockey Kenny Duckett — Football Chris Dudley — Basketball Ned Edwards — Squash Pam Fernandes — ParaOlympian Bob Fontaine — Baseball "Smokin’ Joe" Fraiser — Boxing Bill Gullickson — Baseball Jay Leeuwenbun — Football Jonothon Lower — Jockey Corbin Mills — Bike Racer Bill Nicholson — Baseball Jackie Robinson — Baseball Sugar Ray Robinson — Boxing (Perhaps that’s why they call him "Sugar") Frank Rustich — Referee Ron Santo — Baseball Bill Talbert — Tennis Michael Treacy — Skiing Walcott — Boxing JoAnne Washam — Golfer Any of those still around can likely point you to the Athletic’s assoication (or their agents or their club’s PR division) "Nothing adds excitement like something that is none of your business" And on the 8th day God said, "Murphy, you’re in charge."
