Persimmon

Question:

Does anyone still use persimmon woods? Just before the dawn of metal woods, in the mid-eighties I purchased brand new a set of Titleist persimmon woods(Driver, 3,4,5). Although I have since been using a titanium driver, I still use all the other woods for fairway shots. I really like the feel of the persimmon clubs. Does anyone else still use persimmon. I never see them in use anymore. Shank

Response:

I have been seriously considering going to Persimmon woods.  Persimmon woods with Ben Hogan Apex Irons….One word….Classy!

I’ve got to admit a fetish for persimmon 4-woods – I kinda collect them (got about a dozen so far). Currently, I carry a McHenry Metals Driver and a Toney Penna persimmon 4-wood (from a matching 1-3-4-5 set). Other favourites are a mint Powerbilt persimmon 4-wood (just purchased) and an old MacGregor 4-wood. I just crank the Toney Penna for some reason tho (wish I knew exactly what shaft was in it – it’s just marked stiff). Brad

Oh they are still out there.  I refinish about a dozen of them a year for folks who just won’t part with them (no matter how badly they hit them). :-)  I must admit I miss the glorious crack of persimmon against balata. However, in the end, I gave in to the superior performance (read: forgiveness) of oversized titanium. I have a couple of "prize" persimmon drivers that I’ve restored and mounted. They are gorgeous woods and they make a dramatic statement on the wall of my office (they never fail to elicit a comment from customers who are golfers).   I use persimmon woods–driver, 3-wood, 5-wood.  They are Hogan Apex woods and I would not trade them for anything in the world.  They are absolutely beautiful–no metal wood can compare.  They are on steel shafts, as are all of my clubs.  The Apex 3 shaft is probably a very light stiff shaft, the 4’s were too stiff for me :) David Goldstein

I carry a Ping Eye 2 (maple) 5-wood and 7-wood.  Have never found a 5 or 7 that I found more consistent. Chris Does anyone still use persimmon woods? I also collect persimmon. Last time out I hit an old Cleveland Classic persimmon driver.  I didn’t notice much difference between it and my Ti Bubble.  It vibrated more on mishits, but the results were just as good as the Ti. I might have a few persimmon 4 woods for you, too!  But, I still play a "Pittsburg Persimmon" fairway wood that I’ve had for over ten years. — Barry Smith
