OOH OOH, a question I can answer! Ping is a simple Internet program that allows you to verify that an IP address exists and can receive requests. It can also be used on an operating host to see how long it takes to respond to requests. What’s really being sent is a "packet" of data (ping in fact is an acronym: Packet Internet or Inter-Network Groper), but I think it was retrofitted to match the navy term of "pinging" with sonar to determine object locations from a submarine.

Response:

So it has NOTHING to do with a game on a green table or golf equiment? Thanks for that explanation, Sam……do you know if you are being Pinged? Also, though, I think they were talking about pings on Dalnet to see how far someone is lagging.  Similar concept, but different mechanism. Casey You can’t drive forward while looking in the rear view mirror… you’ll hit something.

Not sure who you were asking Denise.  My post about pinging had to do with using Mirc chat.  You can send a packet of information to someone and see how long it takes for them to receive it.  Kind of like using sonar.  The echo tells you how far away something is. You ping someone to see if you are chatting "real time" or how long the delay is. People on the same server usually are real time.  Others may have a little delay to them.   Larry mentioned that I had left the chat for several minutes before my "words" showed up in the group.  A 7 minute delay made my participation hopeless. sam Don’t push the red button, Never push the red button!       Daffy Duck

If you ping someone do they pong you back?

sort of.   You use the command ping and the TCP/IP address to see if a server is up.

Response:

If you’re logged into dalnet and don’t do anything for a while, the server will ping you to see if you’re still there.  MIRC, one of the popular IRC client softwares (and I suppose others) will actually send back its own response to the server, which will show up in the main MIRC window as  Ping Pong.  Happens about every two minutes of idle time.

If you ping someone do they pong you back? sort of.   You use the command ping and the TCP/IP address to see if a server is up.
