Opinions Please on Stand Bags

Question:

I have for 20 years used a pull cart with a staff bag when I walk while playing golf.  It seems that nowadays, more and more golfers are using the light weight carry bags with the built on retractable stands.   Having never played with a carry bag, is it easier generally on the back to use one of this type, especially with the modern dual straps, or should I stick with the pull cart approach? Models I am considering so far are the Ping Hoofer, Izzo, and Titleist. Thanks, Tim L.

Response:

If you don’t mind the feeling of a backpack, a dual strap bag will be great.  They are extremely comfortable.  It takes no time at all to get used to the dual strap.         -joseph [...] is it easier generally on the back to use one of this type, especially with the modern dual straps, or should I stick with the pull cart approach?

Have been using a stand bag for ten years now. I find them very comfortable, less hassle than the trolley.  Also a lot of courses don’t allow trolleys.  The Izzo bag with the twin strap, has a curved portion like a back pack that makes it ride very nice. My only gripe with my Ping stand bag is that when the legs are out and the bag is standing, it is very difficult to either put clubs into the bag or pull them out. The bottom of the bag tends to bend in when it is standing. Small inconvenience, but worth mentioning. Also, I really like the dual shoulder strap for carrying. A little (just a little) more time to take the bag off or put it on, but again, worth the inconvenience… Tom P. I played with a guy last week who had the Titleist bag. He said that the stand wasn’t braced properly and began to bend after a few months. He wish he bought the Ping Hoofer. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have for 20 years used a pull cart with a staff bag when I walk while playing golf.  It seems that nowadays, more and more golfers are using the light weight carry bags with the built on retractable stands. I’m not familiar with the hoofer. Does that bag not pose the problems I described below? I’m assuming it’s a Ping bag… Tom P. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – hoofer hoofer hoofer! yes, it can be slightly hard to push the clubs in, but it’s only a minor inconveinience.  I really like mine–plenty of pockets.  The only thing I can say I don’t like about it is the inserting/removing of clubs… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m not familiar with the hoofer. Tim, I have a Square Two Standup and love it. It’s a little bigger than my old ping bag but it’s nice getting clubs out of it. Jeff — Jeffery J. No question in MY mind the Sun Mountain Summit X (dual strap) is the best bag going.  Extremely functional, great strap, good wear, and good looking in many colors. — Ash Harrison – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have for 20 years used a pull cart with a staff bag when I walk while playing golf.  It seems that nowadays, more and more golfers are using the light weight carry bags with the built on retractable stands. Here’s my big dilemma — I currently have a Sun Mountain Orbit with a "Loop" second strap and I really like that setup except for two things.  One, I could use a little more space, both for clubs and "stuff".  Second, I carry my bag "lefty". That is, as you walk behind me, the clubheads are on the left side. Try as I might, I cannot get used to it any other way.  All of the "fancy" bags, like the Hoofer are setup for the other orientation and the umbrella or clothing pocket or both then ride against my back. Does anybody have a suggestion for a light, stand bag in "lefty"? Andy

Andy, if you want a lefty bag, go for the Ping L8+, and add an IZZO strap.  With the IZZOs you can make the double strap work either way depending on how you install it.
