* Newbie: Buying first set of golf clubs

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Tom If you’re a new golfer, the clubs you’re using have very little if any impact on how you will play.  I would NOT spend more than about $100 on a set of USED clubs!  There are plenty for sale out there (ebay, golfclubexchange, local shop, yard sale, etc.) that are more than sufficient for your purposes.  The only recommendation I would make is that you find something with perimeter weighting/cavity backed (as you indicated), which are more forgiving than a "blade."  Other than that, remember it’s a mental game more than anything–one shot at a time, set a goal for yourself (break 100 within a year, for example–a tremendous feat!).  I just shot my best score ever on Saturday (83!!) and it’s a great feeling–but it takes WORK! Enjoy!

Seek professional help!!!  Seriously.  Go back to the pro you took lessons from and as for his/her advice.  You can get a 9-7-5 iron from half a dozen different design types and price points. Go to the range and hit them all, rotating through the variations.  You’ll find one design and shaft type will emerge as your favourite.  Buy those. — Doug Main Doug Main Media 780-975-3948

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have finished my first golf lessons and want to buy my first set of golf clubs.  Can you experts give me some advice? I know that clubs are expensive, so I want to buy a set that is great to play with, but not overly expensive. I went to the local store the other day and saw a set of Spalding "Tour XL 11-pc set" for $299.99 (Canadian).  It comes with "oversized driver, perimeter weighted irons."  Is this a good set to buy? What brands should I look for and what brands should I avoid? Thanks.

I’m not sure this is the popular opinion but this is what I would do, based on various recommendations I’ve seen and personal experience. First Principle: Don’t buy the current models of golf clubs, except wedges and putters. Over the last few years the companies have made so many good clubs and changed the styles so often that there are very good buys to be had. Used is good two. Second Principle: Don’t use more that a 5 Wood from the tee or 5 iron from the fairway until you can break 100. Use the 3 iron for trouble shots under trees etc. Woods: Buy an Orlimar 7 and/or 5 wood (last years model, about $59 each). Irons: Other than cavity backed, perimeter weighted look for a set 3-PW that is no longer the current model. You can find these for around $200-$300. Used is even better. These are the clubs you are most likely to get rid off, especially if you buy a cheap set. I bought one of those, MacGregor, and switched to Cleveland VAS+.   Wedges: Buy a Titlest (my rec, $110) or Cleveland ($89) 56 degree wedge with 12degrees of bounce. Learn to hit it right and you can use it forever. You can add the 60 degree later. These are the only clubs that you might end up using your whole life, if you get hooked on the game. Putter: Your choice.  Most of us end up buying alot of putters ;-)

Tom… Just in case you are not trolling, go to this URL… http://www.golfreview.com/reviews/ Read all the reviews for clubs reported as 4.0 or higher. Make note of the handicap level of the reviewer, paying special attention to those who play around the 100 level. Personally, I would pay for a PING fitting and then buy a used set of PING Eye 2+ irons off of Ebay, and then play those clubs until the finish wears off. Then you could send them into PING WRX for a make over.  For a little more $$$, maybe the PING O-size would be a better investment investment, but I’m not 100% certain on this advice.  Of course that is just my opinion. cheers RJ … – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have finished my first golf lessons and want to buy my first set of golf clubs.  Can you experts give me some advice? Tom, I would suggest going to a site like http://www.golfclubsandmore.com and seeing what they have.  I don’t work for them.  I’m a satisfied customer.  You can call them toll free and they will help you.  They will also custom build a set of clubs that fit your height, etc.  Most of the clubs they carry are clones of famous maker clubs, but at a fraction of the cost.  Irons sets (3-pw) for about $140.00 and woods for about $50.00 each.  When I ordered my clubs, they arrived in less than a week, custom made.
