LPGA TofC Foreshadows 1997

Question:

I 100% agree!

Response:

I too feel there is a big disparity between the purses the ladies play for and the purses for which the the men play.  Even the senior tournaments have larger purses.  Maybe this will start to even out a little in the next year or two.  The quality of golf on the LPGA tour is as good as any.

IMHO, the men’s senior tour hurt the LPGA tour badly, but the LPGA tour appears to be rebounding, as the younger players make names for themselves. The aulde lang syne of the men’s senior tour is/was enticing, but their quality of play lags behind the LPGA, again IMHO. I was a walking scorer for the seniors at the Brickyard here in Indianapolis and, even earlier, at Broadmoor. I also scored for the Women’s Open when it was at Crooked Stick and, again earlier, at the old LPGA Mayflower tournament. I’d follow the LPGA over the men’s senior tour anytime. I found that I can learn more from watching the women than any of the mens’ tours – and not just because I’m a woman. The senior men appear to have "glitchy" swings to compensate for their age and loss of distance. The PGA tour has Olympic-level athletes that neither you nor I can emulate any more than we could compete a game of HORSE with Michael Jordan! I finally quit volunteering for the senior tourney b/c I got really fed up with a bunch of superannuated prima donnas who treated the volunteers badly – especially my standard bearer (can you spell G-A-R-Y P-L-A-Y-E-R and the black guy, Charlie Something who keeps a cigar stuffed in his face??) These guys are the minority, I’m sure (Dale Douglass and George Archer were a couple of absolute peaches), but it only takes a couple to sour you on the whole lot of ‘em. I’m sure I had a point here somewhere… Squeaks Proud Alumna of the Dept. of Defense Dependent Schools                and an *Overseas Brat*                     Hand Salute!        ||  Straighten

Actually, a lot of those guys had "glitchy" swings when they were 30 years younger…

One other note that I thought was more than just a coincidence… I usually laugh when the title sponsors prop up an Exec VP to read cue cards for 30 seconds with that deer-in-the-headlights look ("We are so proud to be a part of this event.").  Not so with the Chrysler exec.  To her credit, she was animated, she didn’t appear to be reading cue cards, and she was extremely comfortable in front of the camera.

Like you, I tend to turn off when an Exec VP, who probably can’t tell a golf ball from a baseball,  tells you how happy his company is to be sponsoring an event. Not only did the lady from Chrysler seem less wooden than most, she managed to sound like she knew what golf was about. I’ll bet she even knows how to play the game. :-)

My Dad wants a set of Pings, and I want to surprise him ( as much as one can when giving fitted clubs) …Anyone know about the brand, or of a reputable dealership?  I’m not nearly as golf enthusiastic as my father, and would like to know as much as any of you are willing to tell me about quality, reputation, fitting and ordering, etc.    All I know about them is the ave. cost…

Jill, how about a gift certificate from the local club or pro shop?   That way you could give him the clubs (in a lot smaller package to wrap :)  ) and he could get the "custom" fit that he would like. Find out where he plays and go to that club’s pro shop, or call their 800 number (don’t have it handy) and they will tell you of all the places near you. Just a thought! – Jerry

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – What a great weekend of golf – even if you take away Tiger’s win! I think the LPGA has served notice to the golfing world that it has some of the best players in the world. I think the LPGA is going to have a year just as exciting as the PGA Tour.  Who wouldn’t want to see Karrie and Annika duel down the stretch?  And just think what’s going to happen when you toss in Laura Davies, Emilee Klein, and a resurgent Nancy Lopez! Congrats to Jenny Lidback – not only did she get the ace when it counted for a car, but she added another just for grins! Hats off to the women, they’re going to give the men a run for their money this year… even with the unjustly smaller prize purses. — John W. Griffin

The Ping website is http://www.pinggolf.com and you can learn much there. As for retail locations, I recommend Edwin Watts. They’re first rate, and offer among the best prices and excellent service.  If there’s not an Edwin Watts in your area, you can order by phone at their headquarters in Florida.  Their website is http://www.edwinwatts.com All Ping golf clubs come off the assembly line as standard lie (black dot).  It’s after they’ve been manufactured that they’re bent to various lie angles (1-degree flat=red dot, and so forth).  So if you really wanted to surprise dad, you could purchase a set of standard lie black dots, and if he needed them adjusted, just sent ‘em to Ping and they’ll adjust them free of charge.

Jill, Pings have an excellent reputation, and deservedly so.  A few points you ought to consider: – Different strokes for different folks.  There are quite a few very good   good brands of golf club out there.  Lots, in fact.  The choices any   golfer makes tend to be subjective; if they don’t like the club, they   won’t hit it well, NO MATTER WHAT THE QUALITY.  So if your Dad wants   Pings, you’d do well to get him Pings. – Ping is set up better than most manufacturers for a custom fit.  Their   clubs come in quite an array of lie angles (one important aspect of fit),   as well as a variety of shafts.  They try to sell them through pro shops   rather than "golf supermarkets", to increase the odds that the sales   person is competent at clubfitting. For these reasons, I agree with the person who suggested a gift certificate for the Pings at a competent pro shop. Cheers! Dave

I see a lot of bad habits.  Like — taking too long over putts poor putting high percent of missed greens poor club selection weak performance under pressure and hear a lot of lame commentary.  Like — "All the girls call her "Mambo" because … " "Muffy recently improved her self-confidence … " "Janie is having her best year.  She was 32nd at … " "Patty is tough to beat when she has a 12 shot lead …. "
