Hogan Apex PC irons from 1980's: Feedback

Question:

Looking to buy a set of these used, wondering if anyone has experience, or knows of the club.  They have the Apex #3 shaft. Praise and criticism equally welcomed. — Michael DeKelver michaeldATnewforceDOTca

Response:

I bought a used set of these about 7 years ago and never did hit them any good at all.  The knucklehead I bought them from had changed the shafts from Apex to True Temper Dynamic (stiff), but I don’t suppose this had anything to do with their performance in my hands.  The heads seemed far too light for me; I went back to my Hogan Directors and still hit those to this day.  I’m about a 7 handicap, so I’m not exactly a slouch, but I’d say I’d have to be a much finer player to use the Hogan PC.  Good luck to you.

Response:

I bought a set of these new (with #4 shaft) when I got out of college in ‘86.  I used them for 8 or 9 years and loved them.  I now use Ping Zing2’s but I pull the old PC’s out every now and then and use them.  They have a great feel but are definitely for the low handicapper.  The heads are small and have a high center of gravity.  I would use them more but I need to have the lie adjusted. There was an article written in Golf World 6 or 8 months ago about the Hogan Company.  In it they commented that many club pros found these clubs so hard to hit that they would not use them which contributed to the downturn of the company. I just happened to look up the value of these clubs in a price guide and they had them valued at $ 275.00, a good bit higher than other sets of Hogans from the same time frame.
