Question:
Chippers are useful because you can usually keep the ball on the intended line… however, you’ll have to learn to use the same loft for all your chip shots, as opposed to selecting different clubs for each shot. It’s a philosophical question…do you use one swing and many clubs, or one club and many swings? Dick Weld – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dear Golfers: At a yard sale, I purchased a "2-way" Chipper, an odd looking club, but for 3 bucks, I was hardly in a position to complain! Anyway, I will be honest and say I am not totally certain under what conditions you’d use a chipper…any comments? I’ve seen Ping has something called a ChipO…but it’s $85 price tag keeps me at bay….does anyone have one, and use it regularly? When and where, and under what conditions of play, should the Chipper be employed? Thank you for your responses…and see you on the Links!! Matthew Indianapolis
Response:
I believe it is also illegal if it has a putter type grip. As suggested by a couple of the other replies the "two way" chippers are illegal according to the USGA, and even a "one way" chipper is illegal if it has a putter style grip. If you are already at 14 clubs, ask yourself if a chipper is worth more to you than the club you have to remove? I have a legal chipper( $2 bucks at a garage sale), it’s a 6 iron loft with a 9 iron lenght shaft. And it sits in my cellar waiting to be put in our next garage sale. With pratice you can hit a choked down 6 or 7 for the same type of shots you would use the chipper for, and it’s a club that’s already in your bag. but if you don’t play in tournaments, and are under the 14 club limit (heck if your just playing friendlies who counts clubs) give her a rip. But spend a little time on pratice first. But also try the same shots with the 6 or 7, bud remember no good deed ever goes unpunished "Nemo me impune lacessit" Before you buy.
