Sneakers

Question:

New Balance is one of the best for x-trainers. Go to a store with knowledgeable salespersons and let them know your foot support needs. Chances are good that NB has something for you.  Now, if it were me, I’d figure out exactly what options I’d buy in the store, and then I’d check out ebay–can you say "half price"? :) I also suggest buying 2 pair now. That way you can switch out the shoes and allow them to "rest" which will help them to last longer. Shoes do better if they can go unworn for a 24 hour (or so) period. Good luck! Heidi

It’s a very individual thing depending on the shape of your foot, some brands fit better than others.  I personally like New Balance because they have a large variety of styles & prices and are available in pretty much every size and width.  My DH also likes his NB cross trainers.  I like Nike but find they’re too narrow in the front on some styles, though their golf shoes fit me great.  Reeboks never fit me properly at all.  YMMV. I shun atheletic shoes for Rockport walking shoes that look like sneakers. They are actually classified as walking shoes but lace high to the ankle and have a narrow sole that curves up at the toe.Rockport is now owned by Reebok which may account for the appearance of a more athletic walking shoe in their inventory. Part of it depends on your feet. I can’t remember the general foot types, but there are different styles of shoes that work better with certain types. — Meghan & the Zoo Crew   Equine and Pet Photography http://www.zoocrewphoto.com

I’m an Asics woman, because I have a wide foot and a narrow heel. NB rides up and down in the back on me. YMMV. The best shoe for you is one that fits. And the only way to know what grand is right for you is to go to a good athletic shoe store and get fitted. Go to reputable store, preferably one with clerks who know something about the sport(s) you’re interested in. Try on the shoes and buy them from that store. In this way, you can develop a rapport with the store and they will come in handy if you have questions or need advice later on. I truly believe in supporting local businesses. Myself, I love Asics and Muzuno, but I have very narrow feet with high arches. Martha

The "best available" would depend on your needs and your particular biomechanics. Think about what you will be using the shoes for. I would imagine the suggestion for cross-trainers would be if you decide to participate in several various activites at the fitness center including aerobics classes, racquetball, and weight lifting. A cross trainer would be acceptable (most of the time) but not ideal for all these things. But if all you are going to do is walk on the treadmill or ride the stationary cycle you can buy shoes more specifially suited for those activities. Personally I have two sets of "gym" shoes; a specific running shoe for the treadmill and a cheap canvas shoe for weightlifting. Your best bet would be to find a locally-owned athletic shoe store with knowledgable sales staff. They can fit you in a shoe that is best suited for your needs and your biomechanics. If you find such a store, I hope you will patronize it regularly as I believe they fill a need in the community as no online retailer can, 30% off or not. — Matthew 185/179/160

The kids–well, it is going to be a long and strange trip with that one, as always. DD7 was already saying, when we picked her up at her dad’s and before the "big announcement" was made: "I want daddy to die and you to marry Tim and then Tim can be my daddy." This is the girl who 6 months ago would have jumped to the moon for her dad… :-(  I think she’s responding to the fact that her dad actually tells her to eat her vegetables and stuff when she’s with him, whereas Tim quite rightly leaves the Bad Cop stuff for me to handle. DS9, who has control issues, took a week or so to come to terms with the idea. Then the PS2 arrived, and things were suddenly much better. His control issues continue to manifest themselves, however, insofar as he has declared that I must wear a dress with "big puffy sleeves," which is not exactly what I had in mind. I think if we let him pick out the paint color for Tim’s living room and his own new bedroom, the Little God may be appeased. He also asked today if he could be the Ring Bearer, and I told him that’d be ok with me–he seemed jazzed about that.

Thanks to everyone for the congratulations! We have narrowed the list down to 3 possibilities, I think, after looking at a ton of different places. In the end, we decided that privacy trumped closeness-to-recreation, so we eliminated all the ski/golf resort homes (including a couple at Bryce that were on the list). Now we’re trying to narrow it down between a couple of multi-unit properties in the Berkeley Springs WV area and a single-unit 5 BR house on 5 acres, near Massanutten in VA. Our top choice is one that has 3 3-BR rustic log cabins on an old farmstead, which would allow us much flexibility in terms of how many people show up and for how long, and give everyone quite a bit of breathing room. I don’t know how I managed to leave out the fact, also, that on this wonderful vacation we got to meet the delightful Lauri in WA, who lives near something close to my idea of paradise. She is even hotter in person than in my fake-lesbian fantasies! <DUCK> I’ll leave her to chime in with her impressions of the famous DrLith and DrLith’s Sweetie.

We’ve known each other for 9 months. As someone else mentioned, we haven’t done premarital counseling because we have only been committed to the idea of getting married for a couple of weeks now. I’d certainly be open to suggestions for good programs that others have used or heard good reports on (we’re both committedly atheist). However, I’m somewhat worried we’d wind up spending hundreds of dollars on something that we could have learned from a $20 book. A quick Google search has turned up a surprisingly limited number of resources so far, but maybe I’m looking in the wrong places.

Typically, ‘premarital counselling’ doesn’t occur until after the engagement.  So my guess is none.  I know my wife and I didn’t have any premarital counselling until after we met with a preacher and he suggested it (very strongly … as in I won’t marry you until). Toddly

Tim says he knew I was the girl for him the day he asked me if I’d rather have a cottage by the beach or a cabin in the mountains and I said "cabin in the mountains" without hesitating for a second. So, it’s appropriate. Oh, happy day!>>>> Congratulations! Which mountains do you plan to go to for the wedding?  We have a place at Bryce.  It really is lovely there. Sheila

Thanks Fred. I’m working at it. I think I am all packed and ready to go fly into the wind. Not sure what clothes to bring but I go through this each Christmas. Its hard to go from winter weather and clothes to summer over night. I even spent the time moving all of the short sleeved shirts to the back of the closet so that they would be all together before I picked the ones to pack. Where mom lives is a tad more upper crust than what we are accustomed to. It really is a whole different world where she lives. Not our style at all. We are more casual – almost preppy in style. Not the golf/tennis/country club setting of where she lives. But just being in the sun will be a nice change for me. I need the break, badly.

we had this huge thing of like 500 golf balls.  even if they were rejects or surplus, that’s 50 cents a ball.  probably $200 worth at least. sure enough, some kids ended up hitting them all in the woods.  i’m not going to go search for all of them.  i guess i’ll have to spend about $50 getting a bunch of new ones. my swing is improving.  big swinger i am.  i can really knock it out of the park with a 5 wood.  anyone want to swing with me? michael

Latest on the Burma VISA?

Question:

Talk like this only hurt people, it will not bring good things, it will only bring bad things. Instead of talking like this and defaming people, why not you help them by yourself? Or maybe helping people is not your goal at all? However a quick search on Google suggests that either the allegations are true or the poor government of Burma is the victim of an incredibly well-organised and well-orchestrated campaign of misinformation involving almost every news organisation and human rights group in the world.

Considering the choices, I voted for the later. News organization and human rights groups belong to ‘them’. The same goes for Google. But frankly, I would later go on with my choice, so I will vote my own option. Here’s my option. Chances are, even if the allegations are indeed true or half true, then these things are also done by ‘them’, through ‘their’ pawns. Who do you think owned the government of Burma? ‘Them’! ‘They’ did these actions through ‘their’ pawns, ‘they’ use their other pawns to defame the previous pawns, then ‘they’ use the other OTHER pawns to do things by using the reason that these are done to prevent the actions that were previously done by ‘their’ pawns, actions that were ordered by ‘them’. Oh… When it’s about doing these through proxies, ‘they’ are the experts. It’s useless to join any freedom fighter group / terrorist group / human rights group / etc (created by ‘them’) to fight against oppression (created by ‘them’). Freedom fighters, terrorists, human rights activists, and so on are the same, they are nothing more but pawns used to fight each other. You will be treated as nothing more but a pawn to play with. The object is not resource, land, redevelopment, and so on. The object is your own misery, confusion, false action (thinking that you’re doing the thing you want when it’s actually the opposite), and so on. To quote someone, "Do not resist an evil person." But the news media and human rights group probably would have accuse him of human rights violation.

Response:

What’s different about Burma is the fact that the abuses are linked to the tourist industry. This is what the boycott groups claim and it is basically not true. Myanmar (not Burma) is a free market society where the "tourist" industry is mostly private.

What is your evidence for saying it’s not true. No one’s disputing that the tourist industry is largely privately owned when it comes to small hotels, restaurants, taxis, etc but are the places where the alleged incidents have taken place privately owned? The airports, the railways, the Royal Palace in Mandalay, the land surrounding Bagan? I very much doubt it. If you believe that these reports are lies then what do you believe are the motives of the people who invent them? "Clearing villages" happens in many SE Asian countries, from the Philippines to Indonesia to Thailand. Myanmar is no exception to that. This is of course no excuse, but one should know that the forced clearings of slums in Bangkok or Manila are not much better or different. And you feel perfectly well in Bangkok, I suppose?

Clearing slums occurs all over the world. Were these rural viillages in Bagan actually slums? I can well believe that powerful property developers in countries such as Thailand can buy the political influence to get land cleared. The issue is the degree of coercian, violence and threat used. If you know of an incident in Bangkok where this was done to create a haven for tourists then please send details. This newsgroup is about travelling in Asia and we are free to discuss this without interference from politically correct people. Please take your "morals" to the appropriate place where they belong.

Tourism and morality are inextricably linked and clearly you are not free to discuss your ‘cheap holidays in the sun’ without interference from ‘politically correct people’. This is what you might wish but alas ….. You just don’t want the rickshaw driver, hotel owner or waiter in a pub to benefit from it. You want them to live in greater poverty?

No, of course no one who advocates sanctions or boycotts actually wants that but in the short term it may well happen. You claim quite a nonsense here. Go to Myanmar instead of listening to these boycott people. This country is much more than forced labour and what the groups always claim here.

Most of the people who belong to these boycott groups are probably Burmese nationals in exile and I suspect they know alot more about the positive day-to-day aspects of life in Burma than you do. No one is claiming that all there is to Burma is forced labour and misery. If there was it wouldn’t attract tourists such as yourself who are looking for a good time and we wouldn’t be having this debate. It’s precisely because there is so much more to Burma that it is a highly attractive travel destination. You are free to think and act so. We are free to think different. There has never been a boycott which had any positive impact on the lives of the people. The opposite is true. Any boycott will harm the people first, not the government.

I think that people in South Africa might disagree with you. If there are Burmese opposition groups who question the accuracy of these reports of tourism-related abuses then I’d very much be interested to hear about them. If any Burmese exile groups (who are therefore free to speak openly) do disagree with the official NLD position then please make them known to us. Nigel

What was your position on the South Africa boycott? Did you play Sun City? The difference is that South Africa is basically an industrialised society linked to world markets, so a boycott does hurt. But Myanmar is a relatively isolated society with a rural economy, considerably less sensitive to an economic boycott. The generals can more or less hang on for ever, regardless of US efforts to topple their government. But the simple people in Myanmar are badly hurt by the boycott.

As far as Asian countries consider the burden of Burmese folks an "internal affair" there is little tools around to oust the generals from outside Burma.

<< 4) Tourism projects are causing forced relocation. It is well known that 5,000 villagers from Pagan were forcibly relocated by SLORC a few years ago to keep them away from tourists.   Many, including some of my friends, were evicted in the middle of the night at gunpoint, sent to the "myothit"("new city") some distance away, which was only a dusty patch in the middle of nowhere. Of course they were not compensated. Bagan, as the government now calls it, is a sterile "museum" like Ayutthaya in Thailand, with no inhabitants except the few militarily "connected". One aspect of emptying the town that is never mentioned: the rubble of ancient pagodas is excellent habitat for a number of highly venomous snakes such as the Russel’s viper. Their numbers could be increasing.

Response:

Thomas please read what I have said in my postings carefully. 1. I have been to Burma and went there BEFORE I knew about the abuses. I am only trying to encourage other people not to make what I now regard as the same mistake I did. Knowing what I know now I would not choose to go again. 2. I never said that you shouldn’t travel to any country with a poor human rights record. I agree that in some cases it is possibly beneficial to encourage contact with the outside world. What’s different about Burma is the fact that the abuses are linked to the tourist industry. If the Laotian government were clearing villages around Luang Prabang in order to pretify it for my eyes I wouldn’t go there either. 3. What also distingushes Burma from other countries is that the legitimate government of Burma (the NLD) offically asks foreign tourists not to travel to their country. I checked before going to Tibet and the Dalai Lama and the ‘Tibetan Government in Exile’ postively encourages tourists to visit Tibet. 4. It is nonsense to say that everybody who reads this newsgroup knows about the situation in Burma. I read it because I frequently travel to S.E. Asia but some just dip into it because they are thinking of travelling there for the first time. Clearly you don’t know what goes on there, or you don’t believe the allegations, or you do believe the allegations but just don’t care. In your postings you speak of ‘boycot’ groups, ’sympathizers’ and ‘idelogical pamphlets’ as if there’s a conspiracy. I’m posting as an individual who by-and-large sits back and ignores alot of the evil that’s going on in the world but when I see people posting questions about Burma as if they’re planning a trip to Disneyland I feel compelled to speak out. 5. To say that the Burmese people you have met want tourists to visit is perhaps true. This could however be for two reasons. One is that whether you’re a 5* hotel tourist or an impoverished backpacker it’s still true that nearly everyone you come into contact with while travelling is some how involved in the tourist industry – directly or indirectly. Of course they want you to come. Secondly, do you think a Burmese person would dare tell you that you shouldn’t have come to Burma as it is helping the military regime stay in power. 6. How can you say that this is a travel newsgroup and not for discussing politics? How can the two possibly be seperated? Are you so cynical about human nature that you think people who write in to ask where they can get a hotel room for $10US a night might not also be interested in what happened to the villagers who used to live on the land where the hotel currently is. Like most of the people who read this newsgroup I am a weathly, middle-class, educated westerner who enjoys spending my disposable income on exotic travel. I jet in for a few weeks and then jet out. I don’t regard this as a particularly laudable activity. I do it for myself and apart from the money I spend it’s not really helping anyone out there. I am selfish and I will turn a blind eye to some of the unpleasant aspects of a country and allow myself to enjoy the nicer aspects. BUT there are limits and Burma is one of them. 7. As for the suggestion that boycotts don’t benefit the people I think that those people who cleared out the moat around the Royal Palace in Mandalay, the forced labourers who built the regional airports and the villagers who used to live around Bagan might disagree with you. If the Burmese government didn’t have the confidence that selfish Westerners would flock in to see it all regardless of the cost in human lives they wouldn’t have bothered doing what they did. Nigel – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – human rights abuses that they are not happening. I’ve just come back from Tibet but I didn’t see any nuns being tortured. In Laos I didn’t see any Hmong tribe people being killed. That doesn’t mean that it’s not happening. Ah I see. You are travelling to Tibet and Laos, not boycotting the human rights abuse there. That clearly shows your moral point. I don’t see why you think it helps your argument to just categorise people as being from a boycott group, You call for a boycott, you post the links. Enough evidence to think that you are a member or sympathizer. those who have joined have done so precisely because they have been to Burma and like me feel some affinity for the country and the people. I see. You permit yourself to travel there, but others should refrain from it. Rather than just repeat what is well-documented elsewhere people can research for themselves using the web. Probably everybody here knows what is going on there. We even know what is going on in countries with comparable human rights abuse, like Indonesia or the Philippines. But we still travel to those countries because the whole boycott issue is a nonsense and hurts the local population more than the goverment. Ask the people of Myanmar if they want to have tourists or not. I assure you, you will get only one answer.

Below is an extract from http://www.ibiblio.org/freeburma/humanrights/khrg/archive/khrg95/1095… These notes go back to 1995 but it’s worth thinking about the suffering that’s been inflicted on the local people to make Burma beautiful and more accessible to tourists. It would have been better if the author had cited the sources of some of this information. However a quick search on Google suggests that either the allegations are true or the poor government of Burma is the victim of an incredibly well-organised and well-orchestrated campaign of misinformation involving almost every news organisation and human rights group in the world. "Tourism causes forced labour in Burma. The forced labour to clear the muck out of the bottom of the Mandalay Palace moat for the viewing pleasure of tourists has been well-documented. At least 20,000 civilians and close to as many convicts in shackles have been used for this. When commenting on the use of convicts, don

Response:

Lori, Advanced prostate cancer is not an area in which I have much knowledge. But from what you have said I believe Curt has to be very careful because he could break a bone which could cause a fall and the fall could cause more bones to break. I don’t think he can live his life in fear of breaking something because then he wouldn’t be doing much "living". But he and you need to be aware that it could happen while playing a round of golf or just walking from the kitchen to the den. I’d say just use common sense and he shouldn’t be carrying bags of groceries. I do wonder if he could get into one of the vaccine trials? Do they have him on anything to help rebuild lost bone?

He gets Zometa infusions every month to strengthen his bones. He did fall in the shower one morning but didn’t break anything. He has a helper who carries all his tools and I carry his golf bag when I am there. S13 helps with the groceries etc. Curt just told me this morning that he needs me to do all the things he can’t. I lost a wonderful friend to prostate cancer and I know his wife would probably be very willing to talk to you if you thought she could be of help. Of course she’s old enough to be your mom but she’s a super person. She probably knows more about this disease’s progression than anyone else I know.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It is amazing to me how many people tell me that their "FIL, SIL, Neighbor etc" has Prostate cancer. Fortunately, most of them are in the curable stages.. I don’t think any of us have any words to bring you comfort.

A glossary of liver disease terms

Question:

You forgot one, Kim. Fuckenshit. It refers to the mix of drugs commonly referred to as ‘combo therapy’. Elmo http://community.webtv.net/elmoemerson/DocElmosHepFile

Response:

Following is a brief glossary of liver disease terms used by physicians and other medical professionals involved in the care of the patient.   Special thanks and credit for much of this information is due to Fred K. Askari, MD, PhD, author of Hepatitis C The Silent Epidemic:  The Authoratitive Guide, from Perseus Books, New York, New York 1999. Abdomen The area below the rib cage and above the legs, which contains the stomach, liver, spleen and bowels. Acute Hepatitis Inflammation in the liver of less than six month’s duration. Common causes include viral hepatitis, drug reactions, autoimmune hepatitis and Wilson’s disease, a disorder of copper metabolism that leads to accumulation of copper in the liver, resulting in liver fibrosis. Albumin A protein or molecule made in the liver that circulates in the blood. Albumin functions to bind other molecules and drugs in the circulation, and also serves a significant function in holding fluid inside blood vessels. If serum albumin levels fall, fluid may seep out of blood vessels into the abdomen. This may lead to ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen) or ankle edema (fluid accumulation in the ankles). The serum albumin level is used as a long-term measure of liver synthetic function. Aldactone A diuretic that promotes urination and retention of potassium. This drug is often prescribed in combination with another type of diuretic, furosemide, in the treatment of ascites. Side effects include increased serum potassium levels and breast tenderness. Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency A genetic disease that affects multiple organs including the liver in 20% of cases. The disease is characterized by the production of defective alpha-1 antitrypsin molecules in the liver, which are improperly exported from liver cells. The accumulation of misfolded alpha-1 antitrypsin molecules in the liver can lead to liver damage and ultimately cirrhosis. The main hallmark of this disease is lung problems, as alpha-1 antitrypsin normally functions to protect the lungs from damage. ALT– (a.k.a. SGPT) A liver enzyme that is measured in the blood. Elevations in this blood value are consistent with hepatitis or inflammation of the liver. Often followed as a marker for response to treatment during a course of therapy for hepatitis C. Antibody A protein made by the immune system that recognizes and binds to a foreign invader or antigen to try to destroy it. Antibodies can be made to fight specific foreign antigens, and their identification in the blood may serve as a marker of prior or ongoing infection. Many diagnostic tests for hepatitis C infection look for antibodies to the hepatitis C virus. Ascites The accumulation of fluid within the abdomen. The presence of ascites is one of the hallmark features of hepatic decompensation. Ascites is often treated with diuretics or paracentesis. AST — (a.k.a. SGOT) A liver enzyme that is measured in the blood. Elevations in this blood value are consistent with hepatitis or inflammation of the liver. Often followed as a marker for response to treatment during a course of therapy for hepatitis C. Autoimmune Hepatitis A form of liver disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the liver, which leads to liver damage. This disease is diagnosed through liver biopsies and inferred from serum tests of ANA (antinuclear antibody), ASM or antismooth muscle antibody) or LKM (anti-LKM, liver-kidney antibody). This disease often responds to steroid treatment. Biliary Atresia Biliary Atresia begins in early infancy and causes damage to the liver due to the destruction of ducts which carry bile from the liver to the small intestine. Early damage mainly affects the major bile duct outside the liver which is why this disease is also called Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia; later damage mainly affects bile ducts in the liver. Billirubin A breakdown product of hemoglobin, which functions to carry oxygen in blood cells. This is a waste product that is normally eliminated from the body through the liver. As billirubin levels build up in the body, they give the skin and eyes a characteristic yellow color, called jaundice. Long-term marked elevations of billirubin can lead to damage to nerve cells, but this is generally not a problem in patients with liver disease from hepatitis C. Chronic Hepatitis Generally defined as inflammation in the liver of greater than six months’ duration. Causes include drugs, viruses, autoimmune liver disease, hemochromatosis (iron overload) and Wilson’s disease (copper overload). Hepatitis C is the most common cause of chronic hepatitis. Cirrhosis The endpoint of many different kinds of liver disease. It involves extensive fibrosis or scarring over throughout the liver. Cirrhosis is generally felt to be irreversible. Cirrhosis can be broken down into two phases: stable cirrhosis, during which the liver continues to perform its normal functions, and unstable or decompensated cirrhosis, during which the liver is not able to keep up with all of its chores. Consensus Interferon, INFERGEN A brand of interferon manufactured by AMGEN pharmaceutical company. Decompensated Cirrhosis Also referred to as "unstable cirrhosis." Decompensated cirrhosis consists of scarring over of the liver associated with symptoms of ascites, encephalopathy (confusion due to toxins normally cleared by the liver) or variceal bleeding (severe gastro-intestinal bleeding). Liver transplantation should be considered at this time. Diuretics Drugs that promote urination and allow the body to get rid of excess fluid and some salts. Often used to control ascites and accumulation of fluid in the lower extremitieis or edema. Edema Accumulation of fluid in the soft tissues outside of blood vessels, particularly in the legs around the ankles. Severe edema can extend from the ankles and into the abdomen. Encephalopathy Hepatic encephalopathy is mental confusion caused by the buildup of toxic waste products in the body that the liver normally clears. End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD) The point of no return has been reached in cirrhosis, and decompensated or unstable cirrhosis has set in. At this time liver transplantation may be considered. Symptoms include muscle wasting, fatigue, ascites, encephalopathy or variceal bleeding. Extracorporeal Biliary Lithotripsy In this procedure, doctors find the gallstones using an ultrasound machine and position the patient so the high-energy shock waves focus on the stones. The waves break the gallstones into fragments, which either pass into the intestine or are dissolved with the help of medication. This treatment is performed in an outpatient setting, however, very few centers are available for this technique. Furosemide A diuretic that promotes urination and loss of sodium from the body, which can be beneficial for people with liver diseases, as they frequently have too much sodium in their bodies. Gallstones Gallstones form in the gallbladder when cholesterol or pigments crystallize out of bile. They can vary in size from as small as grains of sand to as large as golf balls. Sometimes gallstones get stuck in the bile ducts causing attacks of severe abdominal pain. The tendency to form gallstones is partially inherited and is more common in people who are obese, overeat or lose weight rapidly through extreme diets. Gilbert’s Syndrome Gilbert’s Syndrome is a fairly common, mild disorder. Hemochromatosis A disease of iron metabolism in which too much iron is absorbed through the gut and deposited in the liver, leading to cirrhosis. Other organs damaged by excess iron include the heart and kidneys. Genetic tests are available for the common mutations causing this disease. It is treated by phlebotomy or bleeding treatments. Hepatitis C (HCV) A liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus. The virus is transmitted through contaminated blood from other people who have the disease. The infection can be characterized by a prolonged symptom-free period of chronic infection. Progresses to chronic hepatitis in the majority of infections, and may ultimately lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer. In technical terms, the virus is a positive stranded RNA virus of the Flavivirdae family. More directly, a microscopic infectious particle consisting of RNA carries the instructions for making more viruses and several proteins, some of which cover the viral RNA molecule like an envelope conceals a letter. Hepatitis C Antibody Includes many different antibodies to a broad range of hepatitis C proteins. The initial test for antibodies usually is a straightforward EIA assay, sometimes referred to as ELISA, in which plates are coated with hepatitis C proteins and blood that reacts with the hepatitis C proteins is developed to change color. Hepatitis C RNA A serum test performed to detect RNA derived from hepatitis C circulating in the bloodstream. Two tests are commonly used – a qualitative test, which detects the presence or absence of hepatitis C RNA, and a generally less sensitive but more quantitative test which assigns a specific numerical value to the quantity of hepatitis C RNA circulating in the blood. Hepatitis C RNA levels are more frequently used to confirm active infection with the virus. Hepatologist A physician who specializes in the treatment of individuals with liver disease. At least one time, everyone with hepatitis C should be under this specialist’s care. HIV Human immunodeficiency virus, the virus that causes AIDS. Many patients with HIV also are infected with hepatitis C. Interferon A naturally occurring class of proteins used to simulate the immune system to fight hepatitis and certain forms of cancer. When used to fight hepatitis C, individual responses to treatment may be divided into three broad categories: (1) sustained responders who rid the virus from their blood and have their serum liver enzymes return to normal even six months after therapy is stopped; (2) … read more »

You’re right, some do have a sense of humour. I remember coming out of surgery with a stainless steel rod replacing the shattered bone in my forearm and the surgeon saying (deadpan), "You won’t break that one again. You may bend it, but you will not break it." He *was* joking, wasn’t he? Waterspider

No place for favoritism in state contracts

Question:

Response:

No place for favoritism in state contracts Recent investigations into how state officials have handled some government contracts raise serious concerns about the state’s tolerance for favoritism and possible ethical violations. The worst examples may be those in the Department of Children & Families, but issues at the State Technology Office and Public Service Commission are worrisome, too. All three cases are different, but one question must be asked: Is the state doing enough to discourage and eradicate cronyism, poor contracting processes and dubious ethics? At a time when Florida’s privatizing boom means billions in potential state contracts, taxpayers need to be assured that accountability standards and purchasing safeguards are top priorities. Investigators’ report Here is what state investigators have found in recent weeks:

I howled at #6.

Response:

SEVEN REASONS TO CRAWL UNDER A ROCK (TRUE STORIES) 1. CURL UP AND DIE: I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow and asked loudly, "How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?" – Melinda Lowe, 39, Seguin TX 2. PAD PLEASE: An insurance man visited me at home to talk about our mortgage insurance. He was throwing a lot of facts and figures at me, and I wanted to follow as best I could, so I told my 6-year-old son to run and get me a pad. He came back and handed me a Kotex right in front of our guest. – Kate Newman, 46,Winston-Salem, NC 3. HO, HO, HO: I was taking a shower when my 2-year-old son came into the bathroom and wrapped himself in toilet paper. Although he made a mess, he looked adorable, so I ran for my camera and took a few shots. They came out so well that I had copies made and included one with each of our Christmas cards. Days later, a relative called about the picture, laughing hysterically, and suggesting I take a closer look. Puzzled, I stared at the photo and was shocked to discover that in addition to my son, I had captured my reflection in the mirror wearing nothing but a camera! – Name Withheld 4. LADY GOLFER: I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was unhappy with the women’s type I had been using. After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who works at the store. He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, looked at him and said, "I think I like playing with men’s balls." Colleen Collins, 31, Ferndale, MI 5. NUTS ABOUT YOU: My sister and I were at the mall and passed by a store that sold a variety of nuts. As we were looking at the display case, the boy behind the counter asked if we needed any help. I replied, "No, I’m just looking at your nuts." My sister started to laugh hysterically, the boy grinned, and I turned beet-red and walked away. To this day, my sister has never let me forget. – Faye Emerick, 34, Ellerslie, MD 6. PRICELESS: A lady picked up several items at a discount store. When she finally got up to the checker, she learned that one of her items had no price tag. Imagine her embarrassment when the checker got on the intercom and boomed out for all the store to hear, "PRICE CHECK ON LANE THIRTEEN, TAMPAX, SUPER SIZE." That was bad enough, but somebody at the rear of the store apparently misunderstood the word "Tampax" for "THUMBTACKS." In a business-like tone, a voice boomed back over the intercom. "DO YOU WANT THE KIND YOU PUSH IN WITH YOUR THUMB OR THE KIND YOU POUND IN WITH A HAMMER?" 7. MOM’S ADVICE: A teacher noticed that a little boy at the back of the class was squirming around, scratching his crotch and not paying attention. She went back to find out what was going on. He was quite embarrassed and whispered that he had just recently been circumcised and he was quite itchy. The teacher told him to go down to the principal’s office. He was to phone his mother and ask her what he should do about it. He did it and returned to his class. Suddenly, there was a commotion at the back of the room. She went back to investigate only to find him sitting at his desk with his penis hanging out. "I thought I told you to call your mom." She screamed. "I did," He said, "And she told me that if I could stick it out till noon, she’d come and pick me up from school."

A man and a woman, who have never met before, find themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a transcontinental train. Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room, the two are tired and fall asleep quickly…he in the upper bunk and she in the lower. At 1:00 AM, he leans over the side and gently wakes the woman saying, "Ma’am, I’m sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet to get me a second blanket? I’m awfully cold." "I have a better idea," she replies. "Just for tonight, let’s pretend that we’re married." "Wow! That’s a great idea!!" he exclaims. "Good," she replies. "Get your own darn blanket!" After a moment of silence, he farted.
