Phil- I haven’t heard about this show, but I’d like to get more information. It sounds like this show would be a good one to attend since we have a golf and ski website — Golf Travel Online at http://www.gto.com and Ski Travel Online at http://www.skito.com. Any information would be appreciaated. Thanks Lynda GTO/SkiTO

Cleveland VAS Knock Offs

Question:

Can anyone tell me who many cuts Tiger has made in all the PGA events he has entered? Someone said he has played in 17 events and made only 4 cuts. Thanks

ESPNet reported that he made 7 / 17. Brian

Response:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – .several USPGA events were won by amateurs – I think Phil Mickelson and Scott Verplank both won tour events as amateurs. Tiger looks really good but he hasn’t won anything yet so he’s got some way to go. A goos amateur career isn’t a passport to automatic success as a pro. Golfsmith’s Trifecta heads have many of the features of the VAS+ (and they came out last year, so who’s knocking off who???).  Iron heads are about $11.00 ea., depending on quantity purchased.  And you get to customize with your own choice of shafts and grips, to boot!

Just to second Rob’s post, my recollection of the sequence of events (and I’m quite certain it’s correct) is:  1. Cleveland introduces VAS.  2. Golfsmith introduces Trifecta, which borrows the notion of an inset     hosel, but is in all other regards pure Golfsmith.  (General head shape,     square grooves, cast logo, not "viscoelastic" plastic logo, etc.)  3. Cleveland introduces VAS+, which looks a lot more like the Trifecta than     like the VAS. While we’re on the subject, UT Golf makes a very pretty inset-hosel clubhead (in the catalog, never saw it in person) called the Avanti. Hope this helps.  |        Dave Tutelman                                      |  |  Physical:  AT&T Bell Labs,  Lincroft, NJ, USA            |  |  Audible:   Work  (908) 576-2194                          |  |  Visible:   Fax   (908) 576-3321                          |

My question….does anyone know of a good Cleveland VAS knock off?  I would be interested to know if there is even one and if they are available on the Canadian west coast.

I have seen Cleveland head VAS 792 knock-offs here in Toronto, Nevada Bobs, I think. Be sure they have a good shaft on them. I sprung for some Clevelands last year (hey, and before the Pavin US Open hoopla), and have not regretted it!! Why is that when you go to play your slice, the shot goes straight?

I also had a sample "Setter" 4I made and never could hit it very well. I had been using a set of Tour Model II’s.  I decided to try the Big Brother (Bertha knockoff) and loved it from the first hit into the net.   Something just felt right about the club.  I’ve had the BBrothers for about 6 weeks now and am consistently hitting the long irons straighter and everything about 10-15 yards farther.  Clone or not….there is something to trying out a club before you make the switch.

: I had looked at the Cleveland VAS clubs at a couple of pro shops and : was fascinated by their look.  I had a couple of clones made for me, a : 2 and a 60 lob wedge.  The head has the name "Setter" on it.  The : heads are readily available.  I have seen sets in club maker shops. : I have had little success with them.  I don’t even put them in my bag : now. : I use Tour Model II’s.  They are ping eye clones.  I have tried a : number of different clubs, the latest being Big Bertha clones.  I : prefer my Tour models.

Good luck. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I recently had the opportunity to hit a set of Cleveland VAS’ at a local driving range.  No, they weren’t selling them, the guy next to me had a set and was nice enough to let me try them.  Can you say SWEET?!?  I loved these clubs!….until he told me what he paid for them! My question….does anyone know of a good Cleveland VAS knock off?  I would be interested to know if there is even one and if they are available on the Canadian west coast. I walked out to the parking lot with tme VAS owner…he got into his new BMW and I got into my beat up ‘85 Suabru wagon…..and yes…my current clubs are a 7 year old set of Ping knock offs.  The only two clubs I am truly proud of are my Invex/D2 Firestick and my 1200GE putter…oh yeah, and a pretty good Cactus splash wedge. I look forward to hearing from everybody! Cheers…Cam Why is that when you go to play your slice, the shot goes straight?

I agree about the Cleveland VAS irons.  I got a 3-PW set about 18 months ago and have seen a solid improvement in my game (most days that is, the Lord be willing and the creeks don’t rise!). One bright spot is that Cleveland has just announced the VAS+ irons, which are now the flagship clubs.  The price of the original VAS irons seems to have dropped about $200+ per set.  Some VAS customers are trading in/up for the VAS+ irons, so some used sets can be found.   Personally, I prefer the original VAS irons, even with the purple graphite shafts. I did see some knock-off VAS copies about two years ago.  Tried a five iron out at the local range.  It set up approximately the same with the offset hosel.  However, it didn’t have the vibration-absorbtion system on the back of the face, just plain metal.  Shot performance was slightly less than the real VAS, but still better than my old clubs.  Sorry, can’t remember the manufacturer. Good Luck!!! Jeff Johnston West Plains, MO
