Question:
Hi there all, I’ve been lurking for a while (because of technical difficulties) and am pleased to finally be able to post. I’ve booked a short flight to visit my family over Memorial Day, and I would like to bring my golf clubs. I was curious what people consider adequate protection — all I have is a hood that snaps over the top of the bag. Considering that I can’t afford one of those $150 hard covers, should I just forget about taking my clubs and rent? Or have other people tried it successfully?
I’ve traveled with just the rain cover such as you describe and been successful. Lucky might be a better way to describe it. You can get travel bags a whole lot cheaper than $150 and I’ve even run across hard ones for around $75. At the very least you could probably go to one of these shipping stores (Mail Boxes Etc or the like) and they often can make you a cardboard box in about any shape ya want. That would be a start. – Rob (rclocher3 at bigfoot dot com) (Still trying to figure out what FAIC means)

They made it safely. One thing I noticed when returning to Atlanta was that all the golf travel bags (there were several) came off the baggage carosel last…. like maybe they gave them all special treatment and storage on the plane.
That’s because the baggage handlers are busy pilfering the bags and practicing hitting long irons down the runways. — Joe Cartpath – www.joecartpath.com Basic Golf Clubmaking & Memphis Area Golf Course Guide

….I went to Hawaii (Kauai and Maui) recently for a golf vacation, and learned that Delta Airlines will not pay for any damages incurred to golf clubs unless the stuff is in a hard shell case. So I went out and bought an SBK case (about $100 at Golfsmith) before leaving. It’s a little harder to drag around, and takes up a little more space in the rent car, but the SBK case is a pretty damn sturdy piece of equipment.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have a soft travel bag (with wheels) that was about $30 from Sports Authority. So far I have only used it on four trips and it did a good job protecting the clubs. My only complaint is that the wheelbase is rather narrow and it has a tendency to want to twist and tip sideways when wheeling it through airports. I just came back from a trip to Phoenix (from Atlanta) where I brought my clubs. I borrowed a soft golf travel bag from my friend, and my clubs survived fine. I did put the rain hood on to keep the clubs from sliding out and possibly getting bent. Also, I put a combination lock through the zippers just to be safe. They made it safely. One thing I noticed when returning to Atlanta was that all the golf travel bags (there were several) came off the baggage carosel last…. like maybe they gave them all special treatment and storage on the plane. I’ve seen the hard plastic ones… If I were to travel more by plane, I would probably invest in one of those. Another thing to consider about renting clubs… My work partner that travelled with me did NOT bring his clubs. The course we played charged $50 to rent clubs… so rentals can cost as much as a travel bag! Robert Shaw

Try some of your local golf shops – they usually will rent you a travel case for a weekend/week. Usually fairly reasonable, dollar wise. David — RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/sneddond.htm

I bought my hard case on wheels from K-Mart for around $30. Kind of a pain to store it now being hard, but I’m glad I have one.
