Here is information about the Sloan-Kettering online calculator. It is possible that it applies to other PSA doubling-time calculators.: Who Can Use This Tool? \ For Those Who Have Not Been Treated The tool is designed to be used by patients who have had a biopsy of the prostate confirming the presence of cancer. The biopsy must have had a Gleason grade assigned to it. The patient must also have had a PSA blood test performed, either prior to or not within 10 days following the biopsy, and not after the start of hormonal therapy if hormones have been started. The patient must also have been assigned a clinical stage using either the 1992 or 1997 clinical staging systems. The tool can also be used by patients who are considering hormone refractory therapy. The tool cannot be used for patients whose prostate cancer is believed to have spread to other parts of the body, such as bones or lymph nodes. \ For Patients Who Have Been or Are Receiving Treatment The tool can be used by patients who have received prostatectomy to treat the prostate cancer within the past 6 months. This tool is not for patients who have received hormonal therapy or radiation therapy either prior to or following surgery. This tool is also not for the patient who had surgery longer than 6 months ago.
On Christmas Eve, Warren inquired: Is there some kind of formula that is used to determine one’s PSA doubling time? Well, a kinda scary response has been posted by MAJ. I don’t think it’s all that complicated, and requires little but basic arithmetic skill.
I’m afraid it is exactly as complicated—or simple, depending on your perspective—as MAJ described. Anyone with a scientific calculator with a log key can use the formula he gave for two measurements. For three or more measurements it is more complicated. As he says, if the PSA is following the model, then you could use a least squares line for log P, but most lay people wouldn’t know what that means and wouldn’t have the tools to do it. An alternative would be to use the formula with different pairs of values and estimate the doubling time for each such pair. Then you could compare the values you got. If they showed very different values, then that would indicate the model probably didn’t apply. If they showed similar but different values, that could give you some estimate of the approximate doubling time. It is important to remember in all this, as my urologist likes to say, it isn’t rocket science. Gross differences in doubling times can mean something, but relatively small differences are probably meaningless. Your doctor should have software tools available to indicate a doubling time if he is going to use it in diagnosis. But it would only be one tool and more likely than not, just a glance at the figures would give him enough information, together with the other data, to help draw a conclusion. Here’s the definition of PSADT from the website of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute: "PSA doubling time (PSADT): the calculation of the time it takes for the PSA value to double based on at least three values separated by at least three months each; before diagnosis, a PSADT of less than 10 years may be an indication of the presence of PC."
This is a definition, but it doesn’t tell you how to find the doubling time from values if the ratio of the values during the time interval is not a doubling. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – And from "What Every Doctor Who Treats Male Patients Should Know," a May 2005 paper by Strum and Pogliano that all of us should copy and give to our primary care physicians. "PSA velocity (PSAV) and PSA doubling time (PSADT) are important markers that can indicate the existence of prostate cancer. Blood sampling for PSA determinations, done at least three months apart, and by the same laboratory using the same testing procedure, are necessary to establish PSAV and PSADT. The validity of such determinations is increased if such testing involves at least three determinations over an 18-month span of time. However, a progressive and serial increase in PSA values should raise concern that prostate cancer is present and that a greater degree of vigilance is mandatory.
All, Im looking to get a travel bag – wondered if anyone of you had any suggestions/experiences you’d like to share. I have a Lynx cart bag now – it seems too big to be placed in some sort of cover – I dunno. Anyone have any good news about a specific bag? Thanks! Chris

Chris, there’s been some lengthy discussions about travel bags here in the last couple of months. Do a Google search for "travel-bag" and you’ll see what’s up… — Dave Jones RSG Roll Call http://rec-sport-golf.com/members/?rollcall=jonesd

If you care about your clubs, get either a hard shell case (I use SKB) or a ClubGlove case. Make damn sure whatever you but has wheels. I have an SKB hardshell that I purchased about 4 years ago. It has seen a lot of airline travel and has held up very well. My particular model is made for large carry bags and smaller cart bags, although I do know they make larger ones. At first it seams a little pricey, but the peace of mind is more than worth it. One word of advice. They do seem to take up a lot of room quickly so if you have little trunk space take that into cosideration. Good luck. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -All, Im looking to get a travel bag – wondered if anyone of you had any suggestions/experiences you’d like to share. Chris I’ve put thousands of miles on my Bag Boy, outstanding and costs about $120. I even bought my wife one. Handles 45" drivers, well balanced, easy to roll around two of them with attached bags on top. Sturdy outside and inside buckles, heavy duty zippers and sewing with lots of padded protection and plenty of space for shoes and extras, even snorkel and fins when heading to Kapalua.

Hi there all, I’ve been lurking for a while (because of technical difficulties) and am pleased to finally be able to post. I’ve booked a short flight to visit my family over Memorial Day, and I would like to bring my golf clubs. I was curious what people consider adequate protection — all I have is a hood that snaps over the top of the bag. Considering that I can’t afford one of those $150 hard covers, should I just forget about taking my clubs and rent? Or have other people tried it successfully?
I’ve traveled with just the rain cover such as you describe and been successful. Lucky might be a better way to describe it. You can get travel bags a whole lot cheaper than $150 and I’ve even run across hard ones for around $75. At the very least you could probably go to one of these shipping stores (Mail Boxes Etc or the like) and they often can make you a cardboard box in about any shape ya want. That would be a start. – Rob (rclocher3 at bigfoot dot com) (Still trying to figure out what FAIC means)
For All I Care (IIRC).
They made it safely. One thing I noticed when returning to Atlanta was that all the golf travel bags (there were several) came off the baggage carosel last…. like maybe they gave them all special treatment and storage on the plane.
That’s because the baggage handlers are busy pilfering the bags and practicing hitting long irons down the runways. — Joe Cartpath – www.joecartpath.com Basic Golf Clubmaking & Memphis Area Golf Course Guide
….I went to Hawaii (Kauai and Maui) recently for a golf vacation, and learned that Delta Airlines will not pay for any damages incurred to golf clubs unless the stuff is in a hard shell case. So I went out and bought an SBK case (about $100 at Golfsmith) before leaving. It’s a little harder to drag around, and takes up a little more space in the rent car, but the SBK case is a pretty damn sturdy piece of equipment.

I just came back from a trip to Phoenix (from Atlanta) where I brought my clubs. I borrowed a soft golf travel bag from my friend, and my clubs survived fine. I did put the rain hood on to keep the clubs from sliding out and possibly getting bent. Also, I put a combination lock through the zippers just to be safe. They made it safely. One thing I noticed when returning to Atlanta was that all the golf travel bags (there were several) came off the baggage carosel last…. like maybe they gave them all special treatment and storage on the plane. I’ve seen the hard plastic ones… If I were to travel more by plane, I would probably invest in one of those. Another thing to consider about renting clubs… My work partner that travelled with me did NOT bring his clubs. The course we played charged $50 to rent clubs… so rentals can cost as much as a travel bag! Robert Shaw
Try some of your local golf shops – they usually will rent you a travel case for a weekend/week. Usually fairly reasonable, dollar wise. David — RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/sneddond.htm

Just a bit of information on the disposal of the golf domain names. It was our intention at BCL Enterprises/Toronto Golf Travel Service to develop these domains as part of our Business Plan. We have changed our business plan, and do not need them any longer. That is precisely why we are selling them off, so others can use them in their business. We are narrowing our fucus to a number of destinations that we also have the names for — torontogolf, golftoronto, ontariogolf, golfontario, portugalgolf, algarvegolf, caribbeangolf, dominicangolf and bermudagolf. We feel that selling the names now at whatever people are willing to pay for them (fair market value) is good business and is much more ethical than hoarding these valuable domains. And just so you know, we intend to give 10% of the profits from these domain names to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Hi Lawrie I am a member at Scarboro and a member of the Captain’s Committee. Scarboro is an equity club with annuals much the same as most in the area. The equity concept cuurently allows you to get back 85% of your equity share when you sell. Financing is available through the club. It is a beautiful AW Tillinghast course built in 1914. A fabulous clubhouse and not a great deal of play — you can walk up any time. It is 30 minutes office to first tee from downtown. Membership Director is John Edwards 266-4546.
