Question:
I would surmise that Vijay’s feelings are probably shared by a huge majority of players in the PGA. I bet you that if we were to anonymously poll all the tour professionals, probably 80-90% would NOT want women in their tour. None of them just had the hutzpah to say it, plus they were just trying to be diplomatic. Which brings out the point about Augusta National and the Masters. They don’t allow women and there are only a few token African American members. Can we conclude that organization is sexist, like Martha Burke has so eloquently pointed out? A lot of women are probably offended by this policy. If so, shouldn’t we do our damnest to codemn Augusta and the Masters?
If ANGC admitted female members and someone voiced some great concern about this, and quit ANGC because of it, their (the someone) actions would be equivalent to VJ here.

says… "politically correct" being politically correct is a joke these days. everytime one opens his/her mouth someone is offended. I would have just said when one opens his.. but im sure someone in here would have been offended. get the point. Vijay has the freedom to speak his mind, and people should not crash down on him because he has the go-nads to speak his thoughts freely. whether you agree or not. thats the problem with people now days, we all have problems and usually most of us just keep our mouths shut. Why usually because if we say something we will be ostersized for saying it. JOHN
I couldn’t agree with you more John. The fact is, if Vijay didn’t say it someone else would have, and would have gotten the same treatment. With the way the media is today, every word that comes out of your mouth is heavily analyzed. Many times athletes are put on the spot, and it pretty much sucks that one statement can give you so much negative publicity, especially when a lot of times things are taken out of context. Instead of looking at a guy like Vijay who has worked his butt off, and become a very successful professional golfer based on that hard work, at least for the forseeable future he’s going to be looked at based on this incident. JOHN – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – It has been widely reported that most of the (lesser) golfers on the tour do not like sponsors exemptions, simply because it costs them money and opportunities to play. Complaining about Annika in particular comes about because this was relatively more ridiculous case of someone not likely to be competetive being given a spot. Most pros have remained politically correct in public and not admitted their distaste with sponsor exemptions. As a golf fan, the exemptions make things more interesting, and so they probably bring more money into the game. To the best of my knowledge no (there is probably an international federation of women’s tours though). — Cheers- Jeff Setaro http://people.mags.net/jasetaro/ PGP Key IDs DH/DSS: 0×5D41429D RSA: 0×599D2A99 New RSA: 0xA19EBD34

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I completely agree with you on this one. It really brings up the age-old question of whether athletes should be "role models" or not. I happen to subscribe to the "Charles Barkley" school of thought that says they should NOT, and that parents should play this role for the younger folks. Like you said, let us just admire his tremendous golf game. In one writing, I saw where he has the fastest recorded "club head" speed on any player on the tour. Also, in some strange way, I really find this VijahSpeak very refreshing because he is speaking his mind and not pulling any punches. What you see is what you get. Contrast that with TigerSpeak where everything is said with the utmost of care and with diplomacy in mind. Half of the time you’re wondering if he really means what he says or he’s just being careful not to slap the hand that is feeding him. The remakrs that women should not be allowed to play on the PGA Tour are sexist. Of course, Vijay is well within his rights to speak these remarks, but they are hard core sexism. The fact that Vijay is so offended that he would skip the event in the future leaves little doubt. I would expect most women to be as offended as African Americans if someone said Tiger Woods should not be allowed to play PGA Tour golf because of his ancestry, and boycotted any event that ever let a non white person play.

says… Personally, I’d like to see sponsors exemptions restricted to: 1a) The top 25 money winners on the Nationwide tour. 1b) The top 25 money winners from the Asian PGA, the European Tour, the Japan Golf Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia or the Southern Africa PGA Tour. 2) Local professionals who do not otherwise qualify. 3) Past tournament champions who do not otherwise qualify. So what criteria did you use to select which tours qualify?
Hmm… The Nationwide tour is more or less the PGA tours version of double A ball. The other tours are members of the international federation of PGA tours. I’m sure there are other tours and/or categories we could add to list. — Cheers- Jeff Setaro http://people.mags.net/jasetaro/ PGP Key IDs DH/DSS: 0×5D41429D RSA: 0×599D2A99 New RSA: 0xA19EBD34

Response:
The pros have their group of PR people (as I’ve stated before) telling them what and what not to say, when to say it and exactly how to say it. I’m certain that is why so few express negative opinions regarding anything or anyone concerning the PGA & LPGA. Does (did) Vijay have his group & he ignored their requests? Of course, that is his priviledge. There are times when we all must bite our tongues, like it or not. He is, obviously, learning it the hard way!
