Sorry Dinah….Nabisco drops late star's name from major

Question:

Yeah and the Hoosier Dome is now the RCA dome and the Cleveland Browns… okay, don’t go there. I don’t see the parallel….

But the Browns new stadium is called "Cleveland Browns Stadium" and has no corporate moniker attached…. I don’t blame the corporations who purchase the right to have their names up in lights; I blame the SELLERS. Jon

There is plenty blame for both sides… It should be the RCA Hoosier Dome. It should be River Front Stadium in big letters and Cinergy Field underneath in smaller letters. It should be The Bing Crosby/xyz touney. It should be The Dinah Shore/xyz touney. What’s next? The Bob Hope? I wish all the companies that selfishly change these names the same bad luck as those that rename ships. :) dsc – acssysdsc

Response:

Or River Front Stadioum in Cincy is now officially Cinergy Field… what a stupid name that is. I refuse to call it that. It’s still River Front Stadium AFAIC.

Yeah and the Hoosier Dome is now the RCA Dome and the Cleveland Browns… okay, don’t go there. I’m more bummed about losing Dinah Shore’s name off the Nabisco tourney than any of the above b/c Dinah really gave a LOT to women’s golf – helped position the LPGA into something worth watching, AFAICS, and gave a certain – I dunno, panache? – to a great golf tournament. RIP. Squeaks I am an optimist.  If I were not an optimist, I’d be a terrorist. To reply, substitute the name "tschiele" in place of "botcatcher"

I don’t see the parallel…. Cheers, Jon "Fairy tales are important, and they are not true, [but] they are more than true.  Not because they tell us dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be defeated." — G.K. Chesterson, quoted by Neil Gaiman.

It’s about commercializing names of landmark stuff. Instead of using names that mean something locally, we’re instituting non-local, non-traditional names that are bought and paid for by a company that is willing to spend huge bucks to market themselves on the backs of local institutions/tournaments. Frankly, I don’t blame the corporations as much as I do the city fathers/tournament organizers. Yeah, it’s a way to raise money, but at what other cost? Squeaks…IMHO, of course I am an optimist.  If I were not an optimist, I’d be a terrorist. To reply, substitute the name "tschiele" in place of "botcatcher"

Another example: Re-naming San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium to Qualcom Stadium. Forget the fact that the late Jack Murphy was a sportswriter who was instrumental in bringing major league baseball to San Diego. Qualcom spent a lot of money upgrading the place, so they should have their name on the stadium, but why also remove Murphy’s name? Nabisco should keep Dinah’s name on the tournament. -Larry

The Nabisco thing bugs me and all.  But my current Pet Peeve is companies such as TNT or the PGA listing the 1999 PGA Championship as the Millenniums last major…..got news for ya guys the year 2000 is the last year and the 2000 PGA is the last Major of the Millennium.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – If anyone else is offended by this, an e-mail flood to Nabisco could cause them to reconsider. I do not mean lud threatening message, just polite requests that they reconsidered their decision. When customers make requests like that companies often will change their minds, especially when it will cost them little money, like this situation. But enough people have to send them the message so that they understand that there is a opposition to their actions. If you want to keep Dinah’s name on her tournament. go to http://www.nabisco.com/ and click on ‘mailbox’ for the consumer’s feedback form. I just read a short story in the L.A. Times that said Nabisco, the sponsor of the Nabisco Dinah Shore tournament, the first major of the year on the LPGA schedule, will drop the late singer’s name from the tournament title starting next year. This bothers me, though I know it is well within Nabisco’s right to do this. A couple of years ago, Nissan, sponsor of the L.A. Open, decided to change the name of that tournament to Nissan Open. Hey, what’s tradition in this game mean when you are talking about corporate identity, right? :) Dinah Shore helped put the LPGA on the map and her tournament was their first major. She was a tireless spokesperson for women’s golf. I just think her name deserves more respect than Nabisco is giving it. -Larry http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Bluffs/3283/index.html — Good Golf Dan RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/driscolld.htm

Response:

I might agree on that although I understand the reasons pretty well. I mean, NOONE ever says Nabisco Dinah Shore anymore, it’s just DinahShore, and well, I guess Nabisco wants their name to be more seen. And who can blame them. And who should? I figure you need to be happy that there are companies willing to put in the money, or there would be no tour.

but it think this is part of the problem … nabisco won’t sponsor the event forever and once the dinah shore name is gone it’s never likely to resurface no matter who sponsors it in the future. brett

Right,  the LPGA, or PGA or Nike Tour,  can’t survive without corporate sponsorship, no argument there.
