Question:
Hello all, I plan to spend some time in Cancun this month, and my biggest concern is whether I’ll be able to watch the hockey playoffs. The hotel does have a tv in every room with ESPN, but I think it’s ESPN Latin America, and according to the info on ESPN website, they don’t seem to have any coverage of the games. I was told that they may have satellite TV in bars etc. I’m hoping some of the people here have been in Cancun recently and could provide me with more reliable information. The hotel I plan to stay at is in Puerto Aventuras complex. Thank you for any information.
Response:
Check if your hotel carries Canadian TV channels as part of its satellite service. If so, you can watch on CBC. We were in Nassau last December and the hotel’s TV service came with CBC and CTV. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello all, I plan to spend some time in Cancun this month, and my biggest concern is whether I’ll be able to watch the hockey playoffs. CBC has most, but not all games……. we live in the states, but prefer the CBC coverage….. last nites carolina–montreal game only came to us via espn as did the sharks–avs….. it could just be that direct TV nhl package didnt carry the cbc broadcast, but my understanding is that espn was the only carrier for last nite…..

I have been to Cancun many times and most of the hotels in the area have pathetic coverage in terms of sports events. As an example, I stayed at the Camino Real Cancun last March, 2001 and they did not even carry the Masters, one of the biggest, if not the biggest, golf tournament in the world and so I really doubt if you hotel will carry NHL games. However, don’t despair. There is a sports bar which has a very good satellite system and where I watched Tiger get the "Tiger slam" by winning the Masters. It is the Champions Sports Bar located at the Marriot Casa Magna hotel, the best sports bar in Cancun. You can go to a little nook of the sports bar and ask them to turn on any sports event you want. On the negative side, you would have to buy some drinks.

I don’t understand. You’re traveling all the way to Cancun, spending big bucks and you want to sit in your room and watch TV? Part of being on vacation for me is getting away from my routine life. I turned the TV on once during my stay. That was to check out hotel activities and excursion information. When I got home, I had completely forgotten about what was so important about TV. Forget Hockey. See a Bullfight. Play Football (Soccer) on the beach with locals. Go for a sunset sail. Absorb what little Mexican Culture that is available in highly Americanized Cancun. If the game is important. Throw in a tape and set it to record the game before you leave for Mexico. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello all, I plan to spend some time in Cancun this month, and my biggest concern is whether I’ll be able to watch the hockey playoffs. Depends on what you count as a major sporting event. I had no problem watching the European Champions League final at Cancun airport yesterday. I somehow doubt that it was on in many US airport bars. I can’t understand why ANYONE vacationing in tropical paradise would give a rat’s a** about NHL games. The games will go on REGARDLESS of whether one see them. It will NOT change the results. Enjoy your holiday and get on with it!! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – — See http://www.scuba-addict.co.uk/ for UK diving reports and the UK Underwater Visibility Database.
