Hilton Head vs Myrtle Beach?

Question:

Hilton Head’s courses are very expensive but are great courses to play. Try goin g off the island for courses that have more reasonable prices but are great cour ses.

Response:

My wife and I are planning a trip to either Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach next year. Can I get some suggestions from those folks who regularly visit those locations as to which location is the best for; A) Good weather in mid April

HHI will be slightly better.  MB is north of HHI by about 120 miles as the crow flies (I think). b) Reasonable green fees,  ie: $20 to $50 range

I haven’t played at MB, but I would think that prices would be comparable or slightly lower at MB.  I doubt you will play for less than $30.  $50 is probably closer to the norm for HHI.  However, there are many "deals" to be found at HHI if you call or look around. C) Scenery and conveniences

Not exactly sure what you are looking for in conveniences.  Scenery at HHI is probably better.  The beaches are a little more private and HHI has pretty strict building codes.  You might want to take in Savannah if you go to HHI or Charleston if you go to MB. Thanks from the both of us, Frank Coster

The MCI golf tournament at Harbour Town Golf Golf Links is the second week of April.  If that is when you are going to take your vacation, MB may be the better destination. (IMHO) Good luck and have a good trip. Ed E — AT&T                                    317-570-3045 6612 E 75th Street Indianapolis, IN 46250-2856

Have spent a lot of time both places….MB is by far the best value in terms of accomodations and courses.

says… Have spent a lot of time both places…. They are two entirely different menus.. one ( MB ) is build for the

average guy who wants a reasonable vacation and a lot of commercialism attached. The other is a bit more upscale and caters to a little more secluded ambience. As for the price of golf, I,ve always found HH to be very competitive in price as I feel certain Mr. Stickley does also.

I played in Myrtle Beach last March and it was still a little too cold to wear shorts but by the middle of April it should be real nice.  My favorite course that I played down there was Marsh Harbour.  We also played the back nine of Tidewater which is suppost to be one of the best courses there. Hope this helps. Monster

Response:

Both should provide excellent golfing, but the other conditions are like night and day. HH is upscale, with everything controlled by an architectural code. Myrtle is out of control, with Rt. 17 looking a lot like the Vegas strip. (Don’t get me wrong: I love the golf in Myrtle and may eventually move there when I retire.) I would think that Myrtle prices would be about 50% LOWER than HH. In either case, you should investigate packages (your best deal). You can get started in Myrtle by calling 888-GO-MYRTLE. (My friends and I have been happy with packages at the Sands.)

I’ll answer your questions in order: A.)  Weather in April in both places should be great…highs in the 70-80 range…lows in 40-50 range. B.)  April is one of the peak seasons in both MB and HH.  You will find few $20-50 greens fees in HH in any time of the year, let alone in March.  In Myrtle Beach…you might find some inexpensive greens fees…but the quality of courses will not be very good for that price. C.)  Scenery in HH is magnificent year round…very subdued…not neon…lots of pine treets.  Conveniences in HH are fine.  Myrtle Beach is a lot more tourist-oriented.  Lots of Miniture golf, t-shirt shops and just not as pretty as HH. Hope this helps. Doug Spets
