Golf Vs Baseball

Question:

I am just going by what I read in my local rag. The reason the games are played at night instead of the late afternoon is because few people would watch. This will hurt them for most people won’t stay up to watch. (like me) In my opinion they better be going after the youngsters or the game will be in serious trouble. Now golf on the other hand is getting the youth and will be stronger for it.

Response:

Just for the record I di some looking around and found that for game three of the World series the TV rating was down 26% from game three of last year. I would call this a considerable drop. This was found on the ESPN website. Mark

This is partly attributable to the facts that (a) TV ratings continue to slide across the board, for all shows, since the choices available to the consumer continues to increase, and (b) the Subway Series was actually bad for ratings, since the elevated home-town ratings were only for one city, instead of two. Just one addendum to what Rob has written here… He’s right on about baseball.  But as for golf’s ratings being good only for the PGA TOUR, that may be true in general, but the US Amateur and Women’s US Open have drawn considerably more interest in the last several years.  Not sure if it’s dramatically up from in years past, but I guarantee you when Tiger was going for his third straight US Amateur, the ratings went thru the roof.  And though there hasn’t been the same draw since, it did create some interest in the event where there previously had been less. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Actually, the baseball numbers are misleading. The fact is that some teams can’t draw flies, while others sell out regularly. Baseball will have to deal with the problem of the teams that sell out not wanting to play in stadiums where teams can’t draw flies (why should they?). No-one watches baseball on TV. Golf, OTOH, draws well almost everywhere and in all events in the US. Only the PGA TOUR gets good TV ratings, however. Rob Both baseball and golf are setting new record highs in attendance.  And though I can’t speak for baseball (because I don’t care about it and never have), I know that the television ratings for golf are higher today than at any time in the past. So what’s your point? And they wonder why viewers are dropping off and attendance is so low…

Oops, you see i am from Montreal, and more people will go to a Dunkin Donut in one day than the Expos draw in a week…..

I heard that Commissioner Selig is thinking about breaking up the Expos’ franchise.  I think it’s a great idea! Rick

That is only true in a couple of cities. Nationwide attendance is down and the world series is getting low ratings. I have no bias toward either team and as I saw it Clemens did not throw the bat at Piatsa (sp). If you watch any amount of golf you will see many clubs fly. There was a long string in this group about this very subject. Mark

Uhhh, no.  The World Series’ ratings are considered average, which is good considering that only one city in involved.  Also, total attendance is up. Read into it what you want, but I think it means that more people are going to baseball games. Rick

I hope I don’t upset anyone but I would love to see someone throw a club at another during a golf tournament.Would make for some interesting viewing. The only thing I would not want to see is someone get really hurt which would kind of be inevitable depending on which way and where the club landed!  From what I understand, Tiger Woods has a temper so this may not be outside his realm of capability. And I am sure he is not the only one. Thank goodness I don’t play golf! That could be dangerous with my temper. I hope this does not upset anyone. I don’t mean for it to. Thank you.

I recall Bernhard Langer throwing a club to the fairway and the club bouncing back and hitting him on the face and disrupting his visor. I think it was at the BMW Open. — Fernando
