Question on wrist cock

Question:

David Leadbetters book, The Fundamentals of Hogan has a good description of this issue. He talks about cupping the left wrist very soon after impact. This is the opposite of Hogan’s bowing and supinating move, but David Leadbetter describes it as a good thing to–open the face and add loft, thereby allowing the golfer to RELEASE the clubhead.

Response:

Are you talking about golf, or choking the chicken?  Either way…..keep it to yourself, huh?

Response:

A good wrist cock is the mother of most of the power in a golf swing.

It’s only one lever available, and there is only 55* of range of motion available in the wrist cock. From a neutral grip position, there is only anout 20* of additional wrist cock available. Maybe it is important as one lever used in the whole. Unless you have Butch Harmon or Rick Smith to personally view every aspect of your swing, I personally would not get hung up on "cupped" or "flat" wrists.

You prefer to swing off-plane and waste energy trying to get back on-plane? Your wrists cock all the way up and un-cock all the way down. If you are right handed, after you have made your shoulder turn, your hands should be set with your left wrist cocked and your right elbow pointing down, forming a 90 deg angle. You now have stored all the power you need to make a very good shot. Of course they are other elements involved (weight shift, rolling your right toe along with the club, etc.).

Rolling your toe is a power contributor? A great lesson on proper wrist cock can be found from Dalton McCrary’s "Straight Shooting Golf". Please look up the url on Google since this isn’t a "commercial" site. His stuff has dropped 5 strokes off my game the first time I went out with it and generally has "put it all together" for me in a very simple, non-technical way.

I’m sure it has. Brad – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Good luck. – Rob Oresteen

You want to wrist your WHAT???

Response:

From the perspective of the address position, the rt wrist folds back on itself. That is horizontal to the address position, if I follow you. The left wrist cocks up / down. The rt wrist bends back on itself. Brad – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – There may be others here who will have a different slant than the one I give you but here goes.  The way the wrists cock is governed by the hand position on the club and the address position.    If I want to cup my wrists, believing that the wrists cock vertically when compared to the address position, then I just need to take a strong grip.  Both hands pointing towards the right shoulder, as a right hand golfer.  If I want to have a flat left wrist then a weak grip will do the deal.  Once again this is all predicated on the wrists moving up and down not laterally.  I never want to cock or uncock my wrists horizontally. — Bob Dye Still Hacking Away Played with some of the wife’s family in So. Georgia today.    Shot 96 on a somewhat rainy day and maybe could have done a bit better, but the sand was my nemesis today. I tried something different toward the end of the round and would like some advice.  Just for the heck of it, i tried cupping my lead wrist on the backswing.  My brother-in-law does this big time and he is an 8 handicap , so i figured i would try the move and i hit 3 good drives on the last 3 holes and finished 4-4-5 which for me was a nice accomplishment.  , Was this just luck or is this a good thing?  I have never cupped before and don’t want to ingrain or even think about a  new habit as this if it is not fundamentally sound.   Usually,  i flatten my lead wrist and bend my trail wrist as i have always understood this to be the "right" way. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks guys eric

Often, *any* small change that you key on in your swing will bring temporary benefits.  It’s a phenomenon I can’t explain, but it does seem to be valid. Depending on how you set up and swing, it does not sound like a good thing in the long run to me.

This month’s (April) Golf Magazine addresses this — they say that at the top of the back swing the club face should be parallel to the leading forearm.  If you have a strong grip, this means you should cup your wrist.  If your grip is more "neutral", a flat wrist keeps the club face parallel to the leading forearm.
