Pre-Round warm up

Question:

What is the best pre round warm up? I find that I go to the putting green for about ten minutes, then chip for about 5. I usually stretch before I get in the car. Then I take some full swings with two clubs… However, usually on the first tee, I seem to mess all my work up somehow, and hit an undesired shot. How can this be avoided, because I always mishit the opening tee shot?

If there’s a driving range, go hit a few balls.  Stretching is good, and I recommend it to everyone.  But there’s nothing like hitting balls to get loosened up. Just don’t hit too many, and come off the range "spent." The range is a great place to learn the golf swing.  But before a round, the only purpose for hitting balls is to get the juices flowing, and to find out "which swing" you’ve showed up with that day. I strongly advise keeping the driver in the bag on the first hole and going with a 3-wood, even if it’s a long hole. Tee the ball down a bit, as though you were hitting from a fluffy lie in the fairway, just hitting your second shot for position on a long par 5, where all you need is a nice, easy swing.

Sounds like a psychological problem.  After a while it becomes habit forming unless you deal to it.  Best way to do that is to relax and concentrate on the shot you want to make rather than worrying about the shot you normally play. When I played holes where previously I had played a bad shot, I’d worry that I’d end up playing the same shot again.  I soon realised that worrying about what might happen or what usually happened was just a distraction and no good for my game.  Now I just concentrate on the shot I want to make and try to execute it.  If it happens that I stuff it up, well…, it won’t have been because I wasn’t focused.  It will be because I did not execute the shot the way I intended.

Best for one might be worse for another, so try some different patterns and see which works for you.  I’ve found that if I *don’t* warm up ahead of time (other than stretching), I don’t hit my stride until after 3 or 4 holes or so.  As a result, then, I try to warm up in a way that feels about equivalent to playing 3 or 4 holes.  And this has worked for me. Here’s what I like to do if I get the time:  I hit about 50 balls on the practice tee and pitching green, with the goal of reinforcing good ball striking.  It’s mostly irons, too.  I’ll do some chips and pitches to try to capture the feel of those as well (maybe 15-20 out of the 50). I’ll then spend a few minutes on the practice green with 1 ball, because I have found I take one ball more seriously in putting it than the usual 3 people putt with.  I think that, mentally, it puts me in the frame of mind that I have only one chance at the putt, not 3, just like on the course.  Thus I’m not focused on hitting the 3rd ball into the hole, but doing it on the first try. A hot dog and three beers seems to relieve that mishit first ball anxiety. I now just assume that the first shot is going to be an experience. Being prepared to laugh is better than hitting my snickering partner with my driver. Mitch Adlerman – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – What is the best pre round warm up? Whenever possible warmup should include about a dozen balls at the driving range. I like to warm up with my 3 wood because… it’s the club I will usually use for the first shot of the day, I find it easier to loosen up by swing a longish club at about 70% for a few swings then up to full power which is probably 85%. Actually hitting balls gives you a sneak preview of what is likely about to happen.
