Question:
For years I’ve been fortunate to have been a subscriber to one of the most reliable internet services there is — Mindspring, which, unfortunately, got gobbled up about a year ago by Earthlink, which also had a good reputation, but frankly, I always thought was a notch below. Anyway, I’ve continued to be satisfied with my service. Still am. However, in recent weeks, I’ve noticed some newsgroup posts seem to be late in showing up on my news server. (When I briefly subscribed to Earthlink before the merger, I found their newsgroup service to be inferior to that of Mindspring’s, and I fear the worst — that a transformation to the "Earthlink way" is in process. I hope not.) Anyway, just today, I noticed a couple of Mark Koenig’s posts were just today showing up. I thought he’d just returned today, until I noticed that the date of his posts were 1/1 (two days ago). But they’re just now showing up on my news server this afternoon. Now, I understand that these things have to "propogate" (whatever that is — actually, I think I have a vague understanding of it) until they finally get to my news server. But that never used to take so long. So my question is this: is it my service? Or could it be his service? Or could it be any one of a gazillion services between his and mine that kept his posts from showing up for two days? I’ll never fully get my arms around this whole internet/usenet thing, and this is just such an area that, while I think I understand conceptually how it works, the nuts and bolts of how something like this could happen have always baffled me. Can someone explain? — Randy Randy’s personal play space – www.YouGoGolf.com BOSS AUDIO – www.RandyBrownProductions.com "I wonder if illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?"

Seeing as I’m being smeared again by your lot, I’ll point out to you what you’d undoubtedly suggest to others outside your clique, that this is off-topic and should be posted to one of the relevant newsgroups. This is a golf discussion group, not an exclusive club for old-guarders and those who have met at events in North America. Thank you. — F.

Response:
Mindspring and Earthlink are owned by Time Warner. The RoadRunner people. I fought the good fight with Time Warner on their slow news servers, and it paid off. They finally did an upgrade, and 99% of the time, things work great, and posts propagate rather quickly. I encourage you to stay on Earthlink’s ass until they get it right. If you just be patient, though, pretty soon there will only be one ISP as the industry continues to consolidate. Guess who are part owners of RoadRunner? AT&tT & Microsoft! Fred

I don’t consider the posting you refer to as completely irrelevant and off topic. The poster was requesting assistance from the group were the ‘late’ posts occurred and were sent in by another golfer who is a regular poster to this newsgroup.. The poster is far more likely to get timely assistance from this newsgroup than from another newsgroup where he is a complete stranger. I only wish I could provide him with the answer. Anyway, there is nothing stopping me from coming to the defence of another golfer whom is well respected in this newsgroup. Why do you insist on stirring the pot and trying to cause trouble? Tom K.

But they’re just now showing : up on my news server this afternoon. They just showed up here, too. There are two likely explanations: 1. His server got backlogged sending outbound articles; or 2. His system clock is wrong. It’s probably the latter, though it’s very possibly the former. cb

I saw the same thing, Randy. I’ve had similar things happen to me when I logged off ( or had a dropped carrier) a dialup service before my outbox was empty. The next time you log in, your outbox gets emptied. I’ve always assumed that the time&date on the usenet servers reflected the time&date in the header of the message you create. I’ve actually seen gaps of a week or so. My assumption anyway. May your next round be your best round. AFAICS, Felicity, your tit for tat is not balanced. Randy treats you like crap. You treat *everybody* like crap, well, maybe not everybody … just those who disagree with you about *anything*. From what I can tell, Randy and George get along better than you and (pick any name you choose, except George.) You just don’t try. You seem to view social interaction as cut-throat competition to be won at *any* cost. May your next round be your best round. My RoadRunner news server is in Austin and they’ve had some problems. What compounds it is that the local customer service reps probably grew up on AOL/WWW and don’t have a clue how news works.
