Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Greg I never played golf until I was in my 30’s I grew up playing team sports and eventually played at a very low professional level. I’d play golf a few times per month and loved it, but always shot about 88-92. I knew I had some decent hand-eye coordination, but golf was more than that, it seemed to have it’s own set of fundamentals, and I had no clue what the trick was. I began tacking lessons from a high profile teacher here. He and I became quick friends and our wives did too. He took me to play Talking Stick here in AZ because his company owns the course. It’s 7300 yards, and we played off the back of the back……My teacher who rarely ever plays golf shot even par 72. As we left the 18th green I asked him how he does it. He never plays, but he goes out and makes it loook easy. His answer really startled me. He said, "glfnaz, I understand what the club is supposed to be doing during the swing". That was it……but it got me to the point of understanding that the game has some unique fundamentals that I didn’t yet know, and that there is a mechanical nature to the golf swing with causes and affects. He promised to teach me and my handicap dropped considerably, to the point where I’ve beaten him at times….more times than he wants to admit. So my answer is: * learn the classic fundamentals * get a teacher who is good * practice more than you play There are no band-aid shortcuts.
Very interesting. Looks like I’m on the right track with all this research, and I do practice *much* more than I play. Also, you friend and coach, Tim Mahoney, seems like a good communicator with a textbook swing – I’ve got the Golf Digest video presented by him "15 Shots to save your Golf Game". You’re very lucky to have him as a coach. — F. I’ve played golf for years, but only seriously in the last 20 months ( i.e. establishing hdcp, taking lessons, updating clubs, practicing). I have a winter hdcp of 16…my lowest ever was 14 (this summer)….my highest was last spring, 19 (while trying to incorporate Hogan’s 5 lessons). My goal is to be single digit by this summer, and stay there. He’s my request. I would love to hear inspirational stories of former hackers who were transformed into low handicappers. Specifically, how you did it? When did your breakthroughs happen….what caused them, etc? Thanks in advance….I’m really looking forward to reading your story.
