Reading a book or two can supplement the lessons:

One beginner’s book I can heartily recommend is "Essentials of the Golf Swing" by John Redman. It helped me tremendously in getting started off on the right foot in the game. It’s out in paperback and costs about $13 (US).

Welcome!!  Golf is a terrific sport, and I wish you the best as you get started. I am not an authority on this—all I can give you is another newbie’s opinion.  Here are some drawbacks to a 5-day immersion. * You may get tired after some hours of using previously   underutilized muscles.  Then the rest of the day is   wasted.   * The golf swing takes time to learn.  It may be better to   get several lessons spaced a week or two apart, with   ample practice in between, to cover the same material   as the immersion. In any case, you are absolutely doing the right thing by getting instruction before picking up a club.  I wasted many months trying to hack around on my own, then had unlearn my bad habits under a very capable pro.

It’s not a bad way to start out, but it’s a very expensive way, as most golf schools will run you $2000-$2500 once you factor in airline travel, hotel, etc. If money is an object, my suggestion would be to go to the pro at your local course and commit to a series of lessons, once a week for two or three months. You’ll get as much information, you’ll get it one-on-one, and you’ll save a couple thousand dollars. However, if you want a crash-course, the schools are very instructional, and you’ll meet people just like you from all over the country. However, you’ll still probably wind up taking lessons from your pro eventually. Randy
