Question:
Thanks, you summed up my feelings exactly about these so-called healers. Does anyone know of a really caring neurologist in the Dallas area ? (preferably North Dallas, or northern suburban areas). I could use a better attitude than my current "care-giver" has. Jan

I feel ssoooooo lucky. My Neurologist became a neurologist because of her own migraines diagnosed during medical school… maj SUSHI: Known to the rest of the world as ‘Bait’.

Yes . . . and an excellent one, too. He’s expensive, but worth every penny. He’s north of Bellevue (in Kirkland, Washington). I was originally sent to several Neurologists in the Puyallup/Tacoma area. The farthest one was about 5 miles from my house. I wound up at Dr Singer’s office in Kirkland (about 80 miles away), and well worth the drive, even with a headache! i have found that a good, long-term relationship with a general physician is much better than all the "specialists" put together. there are many neurologists, for example, who, as a rule, will not prescribe narcotics! that’s like a bank that doesn’t like to carry cash.
My doctor is very happy to help me, but doesn’t have the expertise in this area (clusters) to do the job by himself. So I see Dr Singer, and whatever course Dr Singer takes, Dr Kronlund (one of the best diagnosticians I’ve ever met) follows up on. Here’s my question: Why is it that some doctors won’t prescribe Stadol???? They’re HAPPY to prescribe Ultram (which doesn’t work at all for me), Vicodin (which is FAR from perfect), or Percoset (which also is FAR from perfect). J. I would agree with John’s opinion. After suffering with headaches for 30 years, neurologists are a sorry lot from whom to seek treatment for headache. Perhaps they are better treating some other disease. My best success has been with an Internist whom I have known (and gone to) for 21 years for prevention and treatment when a headache does break thru. His young Internist partner (also a migraine sufferer) is also excellent because both treat THE WHOLE PERSON, not just the headache as neurologists want only to do. I find dealing with the nurse to be less than satisfactory, but if I firmly request a call from the doctor, and am willing to wait till the end of the day, I have no problems. I’ve taken to providing my pager number- then there’s no excuse. I don’t think a doctor would like to hear that their nurse was flat out refusing to pass on messages. — Jim Nugent

I can identify with that today. Neurologist said in essence today, well you’re not responding to the Calan, etc, and I am concerned by the amount of Midrin and Stadol I’ve, I know you’re having a particularly Geeze maybe I can go to the dentist and he’ll be out of novacaine (gotta have something to look foreward to) JW

| surprise him, (but were well documented in the PDR’s insert info) I had to start | checking the PDR myself to see if I could chance them, and usually couldn’t. I have found more good, *working* advice on this newsgroup, than with any clueless doctor I have ever talked to… I only wish I had known about it since its inception. I did get a good tip on curing the slice out of my golf swing from my neurologist though… so my $150 visit fee didn’t go completely to waste.

When you are taught that you are God, then any mere mortal that shows up with something you can’t cure, is clearly a heretic to be given short shrift. The most re-assuring thing a doctor can say to me is "I don’t know". At least he/she is honest! Why can’t you get the drug you need? Perhaps a Harvard MBA has decided that since doctors really aren’t God, (because Everyone knows MBAs are), that the cost factor for carrying a full range of drugs is too great for the HMO or PPO, and the object is not to make you better, but to make you go away and not utilize services! Most doctors at HMOs and PPOs start by throwing common drugs at you first, hoping you won’t come back. I ruptured a disk in my back 6 years ago. I told the ER DR there was a "spongy crunch". So I had not (yet) lost reflex (I later did), he didn’t even x-ray me. Just prescribed valium as a muscle relaxant! I recently fired my latest neurologist. All he did was try drugs, w/o checking to see if I was sensitive to them first. After too many side effects that seemed to surprise him, (but were well documented in the PDR’s insert info) I had to start checking the PDR myself to see if I could chance them, and usually couldn’t. him". Period! End of discussion! This is the way any legitimate medical service works. If any gatekeeper said otherwise, that person would be talking to the state medical authorities. You betcha! Jack Sandweiss Research Associate California Medical Clinic for Headache Encino, CA
