Question:
Do most pros that use long putters brace the end of the putter against there chest or do they put it right up to their chin. I’m thinking of getting a long putter for Christmas and like to know which version is better or at least which is most favored by the pros.
I don’t know that this is the best criterion to use. I got a 50" long putter. It felt real good at the store, and felt real good afterwards. But I ended up cutting off 3" (I am 5′6"), because I found my head was too far back to read the green well. You might find a club that sells them and try them out on a real green.
Response:
Confirming this fact is Dave Pelz in his new book "The Putting Bible" where he claims sidesaddle as the most accurate (legal) way to putt.
He actually appears to contradict himself. Or, at least, his meaning is unclear on this point. He does seem to approve of the technique however. Oddly, according to a recent survey, most pros will admit to this fact but won’t putt this way because it’s just to weird looking… no different than the rest of us. ..Believe it or not!
Frankly, I don’t. What survey? I’m not at all surprised that some people can improve their putting by going sidesaddle. However, I’ve seen some bizarre things by pros, and I’d be very surprised to hear that they would reject anything that could save them a stroke a round. Or a stroke per tournament. Sorry – that doesn’t make sense. Long putters themselves look "weird", as did metal woods when they came out, as did graphite shafts, as did sunglasses, as did fitness trailers. Pro golfers do what makes them more money. They get more money by either scoring lower or getting more endorsements. I see no reason why they would not get endorsement money for using a long putter. Ping would be quite happy for them to use their long putter, for example.

Most of the ones I’ve seen brace it against the chest. Sam Torrance is the only one I’ve seen that does the "chin drop’" Dave Clary/Corpus Christi,TX http://home.stx.rr.com/dclary

Belly, chest, and chin – all are used. There are not enough long putters in use to draw useful conclusions statistically speaking, IMO.

It is true that there are not enough stats to determine which long putter technique is most effective due to small numbers in use for each style. The sidesaddle method has been tested at Illinois University by Dr. Gideon Ariel. (The leader in bio kinetic studies in the field of athletics) His findings revealed a 64% to 68% improvement over conventional putting methods. Now that *is* interesting. I’ve got that book hav promised myself a broom-handled putter (and a snad alone one putter too). I must get hold of one for Christmas. We in the UK have American Golf Discount Stores, but even they don’t stock them, but they have said that they could order me one….hmmm — F. Golf Addict. If you want to improve pace (even over a conventional stance) use it "Sidesaddle". The long putter at Golfsmith is the best for this technique unless you get one designed for it. Visit my sight before you decide. Then have you and your wife try it with hers. My wife uses a "Rodeo Model" long sidesaddle putter and putts as well as I do, and she only plays about 3 or 4 times a year. http://netword.com/oneputt

Tim, I just bought a 41" Slotline at Edwin Watts. There was one just like mine except for another 7 – 9 inches on the shaft. It’s a very nice club, and they are 49 bucks. He reduced mine to $45 without me even asking if there was any kind of a sale. Steve – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am looking for a long putter but I am confused about which one to choose. I don’t want to spend $300 on a putter that is not going to help and I leave in the trunk of the car. Golfworks has one that I was interested in and was wanting to know what the people of rec.golf thought. Any advice would be great. Tim

The best long putter ever made, IMO, is the Ping B-90. Now available with the Isopur insert. $100 or so. Make sure you get the length that’s right for you. They come 46", 48" and 50", though the one I used to have I cut down to 47". It was perfect. Golfsmith also has a great long putter. My wife uses a long putter and is dynamite with it. The only draw back I have seen with long putters is on long putts…they tend to be a bit tougher to "feel" with on long ones.
