Hitting of the toe of the club

Question:

Need some advise. Played 18 today. First 9 went well. The back 9 I started to hit a lot of shots of the toe sending the ball extremely right. any suggestions. Pete

Response:

There are two culprits which are most likely causing the toe hits. The first is a slight shortening of the arms during the downswing. If there is any attempt to "steer" the club through the impact area, often times this will result in one or both arms becoming soft or becoming slightly shorter. The obvious cure for this is to maintain full arm extension through the impact area and well after the ball is hit. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to visualize the clubhead passing through the impact area in an exaggerated path from "in" to "out". Pretend like you are going to swing through the ball and propel it to the extreme right (right-handed) of your target. If the ball is the face of a clock, think about trying to contact it at about the 4 or 5 o’clock position. The second thing which may be causing the toe hit, is excessive movement of the head. The head is not "stock still" during the golf swing –it follows the movement of the spine. But if you consciously move the head (by itself) early in the downswing, it will also move the spine, which moves the shoulders, and will cause a hit out on the end of the clubhead. (If you’re looking up that is; now if you dip or lower your head, you can cause a fat hit or one on the heel of the clubhead.) Sometimes just knowing what can cause the toe hits will be enough for you to rectify the error. Good luck. …a thing of beauty is a joy forever. http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/7903

A toe hit going way right? That’s a big swing and a miss. Often a toe-it will give you a toe hook, the two hits the outside of the ball first and gets it spinning counter clockwise. I’m assuming you’re righty. A previous post (a very good one) talked about swing path and the shortening arms. Here’s a trick I use when I definitely need to keep the club moving inside out. Set up like you would normally and then before swinging pull the club toard you so the ball lines up with the toe, As you swing downward, your body and your mind will want to move to the outside, let it. I’ve used this method for years, and to be honest I hit the ball squarely more often then when I use a normal setup. I use this mostly just for drives, usually in cases where I am setting up to draw.

<HTML <BLOCKQUOTE TYPE=CITEPete:</BLOCKQUOTE Sam’s got some good suggestions. Here’s another. I think what you’re doing is what is called "coming out of the shot". Venturi sometimes describes shots this way. Primary cause is not staying down throughout the backswing until past impact. <PRegards and good golf, <BRGerry <BR </HTML
