Clubhead speed – distance

Question:

I’m looking for any information relating clubhead speed to distance the ball travels for all clubs.  Has anyone seen this published somewhere or is it available on-line?  Thanks! Dave

There are lots of clubfitting references that relate clubhead speed to flex and distance to flex, for a driver and a 5-iron.  (One of these is my Club Design Notes, available at dunkin.princeton.edu, but there are lots of such references.)  By using shaft flex as a parameter, you can use these to relate clubhead speed to distance for these two clubs. There is a straight-line equation in Cochran and Stobbs "The Search for the Perfect Swing", but I’d be reluctant to use it for a couple of reasons:  1. The book is three decades old, and the distances seem a little short     by todays standards.  2. From physical principles, a square-law equation is far more likely than     a straight line.  I believe their linear equation is actually a best-line     approximation to data that would better fit a parabola. Hope this helps. Dave

In the book "The Physics of Golf" by Theodore Jorgensen, 1995, the physics of the golf swing and golf ball flight is discussed and analyzed in gory detail.  One can obtain the source code that models the equations in the book from the American Phyics Society.  Hope this helps. BTW – does anyone have the code or knows where it is on the internet – I was thinking of converting it to MATLAB.   Mark Franz — Mark Franz

Hi all… I’m currently working on a site for the NGCOA (National Golf Course Owners Assoc.) and I’m looking for advice or suggestions. It’s designed mainly for Canadian golfers and it has a different ‘approach’ than most other sites. You can enter scores, produce game reports, calculate your index/handicap for almost 1000 courses in Canada, enter weekly contests, book tee-times through an interactive system, and many other things. I’m not saying this just to get hits, it’s just that I’m not a golfer and any advice anyone would give me would be greatly appreciated. The site is www.golfmax.ca Thanks, Craig

For every 5 mph of clubhead speed over and above your current speed w/ a driver you can add between 10 and 20 extra yards.
