Question:
The other day, I was driving my 92 Prelude Si Automatic when the D4 light started to blink. Unfortunately, the owners manual is really vague regarding the cause of this. I have never seen it happen before, and as I thought about it, most cars do not have a "transmission problem" light. Has this happened to anyone? What was wrong? I don’t know if I should run it about a half hour to my mechanic or get it towed. Is it a pressing, immediate type problem? Any quick reply would be greatly appreciated, my car is sitting deadlined in the driveway and I am using the bus. Aloha, Kama
Response:
The blinking D4 light means the electronic controll module has detected some type of fault in the transmission or its electronic controlls. A fault code should be stored in ECM or TCM, which can be read by a code scanner that the dealer or any modern garage has. you could try to reset by disconecting the battery negative cable for a minute or so. If the D4 light comes on again, have the code read.

assuming the prelude tranny is just like the accord….. there’s a two wire blue ‘check connector’ tucked under the passenger footwell. Short it with a ‘OFFICIAL CODE SCANNING TOOL’ (paperclip) and turn on the ign. The Check engine and/or d4 light will flash out a series of long short flashes which will indicate a number. The first thing a shop will do is to read the code and reset the ecu/tcu (pull underhood ‘backup’ fuse for 10 seconds) if problem does not recur for the dealer , shop will hand you a bill for $45 which says: ‘ran diags, no problem found’ once you find the code, reset the ecu and see if it recurs. if it does not, don not worry…codes can come from things like radio interference…or loose connections. the TCU is under the carpet on the passenger side…did someone with golf shoes jump on the floor and spill a coke on the floor???
