What?  These didn’t make your list? No Time Shades of Gray Zilch (Mr Dobalina, Mr Bob Dobalina) Tapioca Tundra Magnolia Simms I’ll be back Upon my Feet Writing Wrongs (Have you heard about Phil Chamber’s mother?  She said a woman’s work is never done) I’m Gonna Buy me a Dog I was always sort of a fan of the songs where they’d have Mike Nesmith doing something odd. Last Train, Stepping Stone and Auntie Grizelda… I learned to dance to those three tunes.  In the afternoon, just before going to my first dance that evening.  I was already a huge Monkees fan, but that sealed those tunes forever in my psyche.

The last time I saw Paul, we [Paul, his wife Sidney and I] were riding past a stadium in a limo. He asked me what the crowd was about. I told him it was a Pink Floyd concert. He just about died from envy.

That’s not bad.  Got any Terry Melcher stories? Dan

Head was way too weird for the teenyboppers of the time, a complete flop $$$ wise, but it became a cult classic..rent it, it’s a hoot… Someone posted a long while ago mp3s of demo tracks, studio outtakes, backing tracks, vocal tracks, etc of old Monkee studio tapes. Versions of songs sung by diff Monkees then the released versions..wonderfull stuff… It amazed me how much effort went into those songs, which in my youth were just catchy pop to dance to, play for the ladiez, and laugh at on TV.. ALOT of $$$ was thrown into the whole Monkee machine, and it showed, because still today it sells…and is talked about fondly… -Miles, who *still* wishes he could have   caught the Monkees/Hendrix tour before   it was canceled due to culture clashes.

I wonder how many ‘kids’ that were there NOW listen to JH yet booed him offstage then…? yuk..yuk..yuk… My folks took us to see them in Boston during their heyday, and my ears STILL ring from the non of teenage girls and boyz.  We took the trolly to and from the Garden, and I remember hearing NOTHING but static all the way home.  But we had fun. When I was young I always thought that that was scripted to be silly. When I went back and listened with more recording experience I came to the conclusion that that was a a first take where they were just learning the song and it was so inspired-ly silly that they kept it. That’s something I would have expected on Headquarters (like "Band 6") but I’m kind of impressed that they got away with it on the first album.

Response:

Ahhh, the Monkees…  I was a huge fan.  When I was in 2nd grade my friends and I used to put on the records and pretend to be the Monkees in my friends’ basement.  I wore out the first 3 records as a kid but am not so familiar with subsequent records (except "Head").   My fave that you left off the list is Nesmith’s "Sunny Girlfriend." Last year (or the year before?) I recorded versions of "Sunny Girlfriend" and "Mary Mary" for a Nesmith tribute CD (see www.drenrecords.com).  I ended up submitting "S. Girlfriend." Well, it’s not like the band didn’t enjoy their share of success.  PR&R made ME green with envy.  I’ll tell you what, when "Just Like Me" came out, I had to buy two copies of the 45 because I wore the first one right out.  It’d get to the end, and I’d just play it back again, over and over.  That Drake Levin was one cool guitar player, and the first example of a double lead solo I can think of. ~kp

Damn, the ’60s are getting to be a long time ago by now, but it was a time where you could get away with a lot of stuff.  They were definitely the "Let’s throw it at the wall, and see if it sticks" years of music. As much as The Monkees were pretty much designed for television, at least that’s what I think they were, they sure did seem like they did a lot of cool stuff if you go and sort through their album’s song lists.  They EVEN started one of their shows with a short Frank Zappa interview! Pete

Yeah, recorded the drums with 1 mic on a reel to reel and transferred it to ADAT at half speed.  That’s why it sounds like it’s on ‘ludes. Lead guitar is a total wank fest, don’t you think? -Scott McKnight

Yeah, but feedback’s fun!  Sunny Girlfriend was done much better overall though, but Mary Mary was an interesting different direction for that song. Pete

Damn it, I was collage aged at the wrong time!  I had enough "no musical experience" for all four members! You know why I respect the Monkees?  They never added any members! Sure, they really didn’t play their own instruments anyhow, so they really didn’t have to, but they didn’t. Pete

I just came home from a gig in Maine.  Driving down Interstate 495 South, in Massachussetts, I passed an exit which read "Pleasant Valley".  I’m not kidding.  Anyone here ever heard of any other Pleasant Valley anywhere? Could that possibly be *the one*? ~kp

We do Steppin Stone about every 3rd -4th week…  someone ‘called the tune’ about 4 months ago and we just *played* it…  apparantly everyone in the band knew the tune…  harmonies, stops, and all… gtski

Didn’t mean to revive any bad memories.  The LA rock scene from 65 to 73 fascinates me, and he was definitely a key figure.  He comes to mind in this connection because he (I thought) produced Paul Revere & the Raiders. Dan
