*twitch* Why do I get husbands with the same names as everyone else’s? And believe it or not, that would’ve been a typical statement from mine. Jess

I never got one either.  We were too poor and it’s not a priority for either of us. Lilith- my best wishes to you and your boyfriend and may you have a long, healthy and happy marriage.

The kids–well, it is going to be a long and strange trip with that one, as always. DD7 was already saying, when we picked her up at her dad’s and before the "big announcement" was made: "I want daddy to die and you to marry Tim and then Tim can be my daddy." This is the girl who 6 months ago would have jumped to the moon for her dad… :-(  I think she’s responding to the fact that her dad actually tells her to eat her vegetables and stuff when she’s with him, whereas Tim quite rightly leaves the Bad Cop stuff for me to handle. DS9, who has control issues, took a week or so to come to terms with the idea. Then the PS2 arrived, and things were suddenly much better. His control issues continue to manifest themselves, however, insofar as he has declared that I must wear a dress with "big puffy sleeves," which is not exactly what I had in mind. I think if we let him pick out the paint color for Tim’s living room and his own new bedroom, the Little God may be appeased. He also asked today if he could be the Ring Bearer, and I told him that’d be ok with me–he seemed jazzed about that.

Thanks to everyone for the congratulations! We have narrowed the list down to 3 possibilities, I think, after looking at a ton of different places. In the end, we decided that privacy trumped closeness-to-recreation, so we eliminated all the ski/golf resort homes (including a couple at Bryce that were on the list). Now we’re trying to narrow it down between a couple of multi-unit properties in the Berkeley Springs WV area and a single-unit 5 BR house on 5 acres, near Massanutten in VA. Our top choice is one that has 3 3-BR rustic log cabins on an old farmstead, which would allow us much flexibility in terms of how many people show up and for how long, and give everyone quite a bit of breathing room. I don’t know how I managed to leave out the fact, also, that on this wonderful vacation we got to meet the delightful Lauri in WA, who lives near something close to my idea of paradise. She is even hotter in person than in my fake-lesbian fantasies! <DUCK> I’ll leave her to chime in with her impressions of the famous DrLith and DrLith’s Sweetie.

We’ve known each other for 9 months. As someone else mentioned, we haven’t done premarital counseling because we have only been committed to the idea of getting married for a couple of weeks now. I’d certainly be open to suggestions for good programs that others have used or heard good reports on (we’re both committedly atheist). However, I’m somewhat worried we’d wind up spending hundreds of dollars on something that we could have learned from a $20 book. A quick Google search has turned up a surprisingly limited number of resources so far, but maybe I’m looking in the wrong places.

Typically, ‘premarital counselling’ doesn’t occur until after the engagement.  So my guess is none.  I know my wife and I didn’t have any premarital counselling until after we met with a preacher and he suggested it (very strongly … as in I won’t marry you until). Toddly

Yeah, just go to Paiute. You won’t regret it! Definately one of the best in Las Vegas. I played the lesser of the three courses in 1999 and it was amazing! Bring a jacket!! (It’s a 30 mins drive up into the hills) It was like 42 degrees up there in late April!! Two guys we were playing with HAD to spring for $70 sweatshirts at the turn! This is AFTER paying for a $130 green fee! I had an old sweatshirt in the bag. I felt like I just hit the jackpot. Pratice your drives. If you are going to play golf in Las Vegas, you have to check out these tee time auctions at Las Vegas Paiute and Revere at Anthem. The best courses for the money are the Puite Indian courses check out: http://www.lvpaiutegolf.com/ Also Badlands is a desert target course that has incredible views but with a 15 or high handicap will be HELL!!! http://badlandsgolf.com/ The Sun City courses are also great. For all the best data regarding golf check out www.golflv.com My order of courses to play, also considering green fees would be: 1. Orignal Puite Course 2. New Puite Course 3. Badlands 4. Sun City Highland Falls 5. Sun City Palm 6. Angle Park Mountian Course Courses which I feel are way over priced but nice are TPC Canyons, Rio, LV International (old Hilton), Wildhorse. One course I would stay away from is Desert Pines. Its on only 90 acres and the fairways are like bowling alleys to try to fit the course on such a small land area. Let me know if you have any other specific questions regarding golf here. I was in Vegas in January and played at the Paiute Resort, it is about 30 mins north west but worth the drive, there is 6-7 holes with water and the greens were very nice.  Quite busy and no clubhouse built then (mebbe now, in construction jan), not too long a course nor too difficult but very enjoyable.  It is a pete dye design. tel 800-711-2833 Ken St Andrews Scotland www.sol.co.uk/d/dabog Tee to Green Golf Tipping pages

Batam/Bintan, Indonesia

Question:

Hi, There is a good hotel on Batam, out of town, on the top of a hill, I think it was called The Hill Top Hotel or something similar. Good rooms, food and swimming pool. There was a special deal through a travel agent and only cost S$50 per night. I regret not getting to the Oar House, just for a beer, take a photograph and be able to tell the story about it ;-) Cheers, Pete Loud

Where To Golf In Phoenix and/or Sedona

Question:

Looking for fairly challenging courses in these areas that I can golf for less than $70 a round in July of 2003.  Hopefully the time of year will keep greens fees down in the desert. Any suggestions?

Golf in Phx is cheap in the summer due to it being SO FRIGGING HOT. I played 500 Club, (pretty easy layout), on a weekday and was the 14th golfer on the course. Apparently there were 13 other people as desperate as me, to play in this godawful heat. If in Phx, pick up the Thursday edition of the Arizona Republic, sports section. There are numerous coupons and adds. Don’t overlook Prescott, (kind of on the way to Sedona from Phx). There are some good courses there as well. Tucson, south of Phx, has some great venues as well. I played 27 holes yesterday and drank 3 liters of water and 2 – 32oz jugs of Gatorade. Hydrate or die. — Golfing in Arizona.

I’ve visited Sedona a few times and just got back from there.  I also played Los Caballaros (great track) in Wickenburg, AZ.   Deer crossing the fairways and practice range…  In Sedona there are 2 courses…  Sedona Golf Resort and Oak Valley CC.   Both are outstanding tracks, very well maintained.  Each round was about $80.pp including cart.  2 executive tracks. At Sedona Resort, there’s a 623yd par 5 uphill that busts your butt needing 3 outstanding shots…  Both tracks are worthy tests from the Blues.  Sedona has a 10under index for the blues. In Phoenix, there are many quality tracks for under $70 during the summer… G

It’s cheaper and better than the big name Scottsdale courses.  I did like Troon North before they surrounded it with houses, but now I’d give the nod to Talking Stick. Another option is to take a drive out to Globe and play Apache Stronghold. They had a great "stay and play" deal (the course is located next to a casino) this summer, something like $79 for a room, breakfast, green fees and cart. — John Looking for fairly challenging courses in these areas that I can golf for less than $70 a round in July of 2003.  Hopefully the time of year will keep greens fees down in the desert.  Any suggestions? — Joe & Elaine

Hey guys, You will have absolutley no problem finding inexpensive golf that time of year.  Keep in mind it will be very hot..i have never drank as much water.  I have played out in phoenix and palm springs the last few summers.  There will be many, many specials.  Go to any local golf store or get the local newspapers for coupons..  And check the web sites for each course.  A few years back, I got a deal for Greyhawk…four players for $100.  And i played TPC Scottsdale real cheap.  Don’t rmember the price, but it was well under $75.  There are some RSG’ers who live in the area and i am sure when it comes closer to the time, they could give you the latest "scoop" on current deals I love desert golf.  Even though it is almost a year away, i wish you well for a great time and planning it will be half the fun. eric

Head was way too weird for the teenyboppers of the time, a complete flop $$$ wise, but it became a cult classic..rent it, it’s a hoot… Someone posted a long while ago mp3s of demo tracks, studio outtakes, backing tracks, vocal tracks, etc of old Monkee studio tapes. Versions of songs sung by diff Monkees then the released versions..wonderfull stuff… It amazed me how much effort went into those songs, which in my youth were just catchy pop to dance to, play for the ladiez, and laugh at on TV.. ALOT of $$$ was thrown into the whole Monkee machine, and it showed, because still today it sells…and is talked about fondly… -Miles, who *still* wishes he could have   caught the Monkees/Hendrix tour before   it was canceled due to culture clashes.

When I was young I always thought that that was scripted to be silly. When I went back and listened with more recording experience I came to the conclusion that that was a a first take where they were just learning the song and it was so inspired-ly silly that they kept it. Newport News park is a city run park off I-64 very close to Kiln Creek. Kiln Creek is right down Jefferson Ave. from the park.  The park is on the outskirts of town in a wooded area on a reservoir.  We have camped there with out RV (24′ trailer) and the boy scouts go there all the time.  The park is maintained well and I would recommend.  As far as Williamsburg, it is only a few minute drive up I-64 from the park, so going to another campground really is not required, however, there are a few KOAs in the area. Orlando Florida Mall Campgrounds…NOT Disney/theme related

Question:

They have 3 rate plans depending upon the sites you pick.  My wife has a better handle on the rates.  I will see if I can get her to post line and ask.   I believe the lower summer rates are soon going into effect. I think considering monthly rates vs quality  of your stay vs relative location to the attractions, you will find this park one of the better options.

I will be there for work so the attractions are irrelevant to me. Just a nice place to park for many months.  I will know if things work out in a couple of months.  But I would stay for a long time, probably 6-months to a year or more. Everything around there seems geared to the theme-parks.  I may be working with a company at the Florida Mall.  That is why I was using that location as a key to the location of the campground. We’re in Clerbrook RV and Golf Resort. It’s 6 miles north of Clermont, which is on Hwy 50. The Florida turnpike is about a mile north of us. If you look at a Florida map, it’s where Hwy 27 and thw turnpike cross. The park has a monthly rate of $375 plus electric. It’s a nice park within easy driving distance of the Disney area. Hugh

That’s a good suggestion.  The Orlando Winter Garden RV Resort is part of the same organization but is even closer in Wintergarden.  I know that I will eventually just have to check it out in person.   D* My commitment is to truth, not consistency. ~ Mohandas K. Gandhi

I also checked Orlando Winter Garden RV Resort, owned by the same company.  It is on the turnpike closer into Orlando.  Hunter told me to be carful of the toll-rates around Orlando.  Then…I found this nifty Toll/Mileage Calculator web-site.  Check it out! http://www11.myflorida.com/turnpikepio/TollCalculator/tollrates.htm I guess I have been driving in Dallas for too long.  (20-years)   From the first exit  for Orlando Winter Garden RV Resort to the exit at the Mall would be only 8.19 miles and cost 50cents.   Gosh, in Dallas I stay ten miles north of the outside loop!  The toll-ways around here are expensive compared to that one!  A short trip is 75cents or more.  I am gonna check out both of those places.   Thanks for the advice!!! Since you are a musician, I might mention the park has a jam session every Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00. Mostly country with some good Gospel mixed in. Folks in the park and from the surrounding area come in and have a ball. It’s a really friendly park, not all grumpy old farts, just a few like me <g. Hugh

Don, I’m currently at "Raccoon Lake" campground, on hwy 192 just past Orange Lake resort (formerly Yogi Bear Campground, or some such) – have been there almost a month, and will be there more months – their monthly rates are good.  I’m paying $300 / month + electricity and 10% tax.  It’s a quiet place (with trees).  Some of the sites are a little weird, made for old rigs, I guess, but it’s a comfortable place for me.  I have plenty of room for my 36′ 5er with slides.  I’m working in Kissimmee, is the reason for being there. Any idea of monthly rates?  I have seen their web sites but there are no rates listed. And, there are no trees! Thanks for the recommendation. D* My commitment is to truth, not consistency. ~ Mohandas K. Gandhi

The KOA on 192 appeared to be closed when we went by it in January. There were a few places along 192 that advertised low rates on their signs. I think you would want to do a drive by before committing any of your hard earned money to them. We stayed at Sherwood Forest for a week. I think it was about $30 per night. They did appear to have some semi permanent campers. I don’t know what their long term rates are, though. Jim Clark

The park is probably 70 percent (just a guess) no trees.  Also, what do you consider a tree?   Complete overhead canopy?   A lone tree that cast a shadow on your site in the hot afternoon?    It depends upon when you plan on coming.   If it is during the spring/summer/fall months you could probably get a spot under the trees.   All depending upon how long in advance you make your reservation. — Mike Gormley P.O. Sandal St Lucia Golf Resort & Spa

Question:

My girlfriend and I are heading to Sandal St Lucia Golf Resort & Spa in late May.  Has anyone in this group been there?  If so, any hot tips (restaurants, things to do or see at the resort, etc.) or suggestions on optional tours while there.

Response:

I included details and a description of this resort in my book "THE MOST ROMANTIC RESORTS FOR DESTINATION WEDDINGS, MARRIAGE RENEWALS, & HONEYMOONS.’"   Here’s what you should know.  This resort has 5 freshwater swimming pools and 5 whirlpools — one of them is one of the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pools, with a dramatic waterfall and swim-up pool bar. Some rooms have their own private pools.   It also has a 9-hole golf course, and the resort is designed to look like an authentic Caribbean village, with rooms situated in quaint Caribbean cottages. It also has 6 restaurants and 10 bars and is 2 miles from St. John’s and 5 miles from the airport. Sandals also has another resort in St. Lucia.  By the way, if you don’t like mountainous driving, choose another island. Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort, Grand Bahama Island

Question:

Hello, The wife and I are expecting to be going to this destination in April. Does anyone have any good/bad feedback about the resort or Grand Bahama in general that they would be willing to share on or offline?  Any advice or info would be appreciated.  We’ve never been to the Bahamas or this resort. Thx in advance for help. – michael chmura

Response:

Grand Bahama is not as developed as Nassau nor does it have the big tourist amenities.  Our Bahamas is brand new (only a year old) and still being built.  It is very well appointed and you will have a good time.  Not much else to do there.  They have the only good beach.  The casino is a short cab ride away as is the International Market where all of the duty free shops are located. Don’t expect to find a "tropical paradise" and you will have an enjoyable time. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello, The wife and I are expecting to be going to this destination in April. We stayed at the Lucaya Village Marina for the 2nd time last week.  All persons were polite, courteous and efficient.  We talked to some folks who were staying at Our Lucaya and they seemed happy.  However, there was some labor unrest because a hotel brought in a non-Bahamian as manager to replace a Bahamian.     The hotel workers union was upset, and was working to rule. This would affect people staying in hotels. At Lucaya there is the Market place with a lot of restaurants and shops and an internet cafe, and you can go on various cruises etc – the Bahama Mama does booze cruises, sunset cruises etc, there is a semi submarine tour, kayak tours, snorkeling tours, scuba, and even a swim with the dolphin thing, which I would absolutely recommend you not do (just my prejudice against caged dolphins or whales). You can also get a bus/van into Freeport to the International Bazaar or Freeport itself for about $1 @.  Drivers are helpful, although the vans may be well used.  There is a Winn Dixie out on Seahorse Road, and another one in Freeport proper.  I understand that there is also a casino, but I have not been. There are several parks (like US National Parks) – two on the island itself, and one on an island offshore.  There’s also a parrot place and several gardens, golf and horseback riding. You can rent a car but they do drive on the left with LHD cars.  The island itself is not terribly scenic. We also were in Old Bahama Bay Marina at West End (also Grand Bahama) and there is a hotel type operation there, with nature trails and snorkeling areas.  The personnel were again courteous and efficient.  But this area is a $30 cab ride from Freeport and the bus doesn’t run often and is $5.00 grandma Rosalie
