Will someone start a new group?

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dear RSG readers, I love Tiger Woods and what he has done for the game. But, the discussion about him has taken over this group. An easier solution, one that does not entail the entire world working up an RFD, followed by a confirmation vote, and the whole nasty process of creating a newsgroup, would be for you to buy a decent newsreader and set it to kill any thread with "Tiger" contained in the subject line.  There is an outside possibility that your own newsreader is capable of doing just that. I beg someone, please start a seperate news group about Tiger…. In other words:  I beg someone else to spend weeks and weeks and endless hassles with news.admin to satisfy my whim, because I’m too lazy to do it myself. You know what would happen, don’t you?  Every single post from the new REC.SPORT.GOLF.TIGER-WOODS would be crossposted to rec.sport.golf. You could bet your new titaniums on it.  You’d have one more newsgroup and no help for your problem at all.  And people would still post TIGER articles to rec.sport.golf without putting them in rsg.t-w.

IF Tiger continues to win tourtments HE will be on center stage, media, and on this group! Fact of life! Time will level the field!

Response:

 – in response to Jim Tims’ recommendation to use the KILL capability of         existing newsreaders — Or he could just start posting about non-Tiger issues rather than complaining.  There are a number of RSG’ers who have expressed the desire to talk about other things and who are willing to do so.  Today’s topics include golf courses, clubmaking, requests for info on travel to Great Britain, technical info on ball speed, Nick Faldo, scoring averages, swing problems, etc….  Most days, there are many non-Tiger posts.

Yes to both! I just added to my KILL file the strings "Tiger", "Fuzzy", and "Racist", and cut the volume in half.  Of 120 articles, only slightly more than 60 were left after KILL processing.  And only about a dozen political diatribes among them (with different words in the title).  That gives us 50 GOLF-related articles, including a bunch of interesting [to me] technical and clubmaking articles. Also, I oppose splitting RSG for exactly the reaon Jim cites.  The folks who are misbehaving now will CONTINUE to misbehave, and post or crosspost their political and Tiger-related stuff to RSG.  (Hey, at least one of them believes "Tiger IS golf".  Tiger is a very good golfer, probably the best in the world right now, and but gimme a break.  I’d even argue with the notion that the pros ARE golf.) Cheers! Dave

No, the people who worship Tiger Woods as if he were Jesus Christ are the one’s who changed rec.sport.golf.

Well that is hard to argue, but do you want Tiger on the US Ryder Cup team?  I sure do. Cheers, Mike — Mike Marler                          Information Technology, Georgia Tech

Response:

Anyway, haven’t you heard? TIGER IS GOLF.

There are 25 million golfers in this country. Speaking for myself I am NOT Tiger Woods. I agree, can’t we keep the Woods worshipping to a minimum. He’s a good golfer, but he’ll be the next Bobby Clampett if everyone keeps building into a golf god. He still has a lot to prove, I’m sure not only to the golfing public, but also himself. So let’s give him some breathing room.

: I agree.  Tiger’s chief cheerleader recently tried to rebuff such a : statement by saying that only 2% of the threads were about Tiger…well, : maybe only 2% of the threads, but today when I logged on there were 224 : messages, 108 of which had the word Tiger or Woods in the subject line (and : for those that were "woods" I checked to be sure they weren’t talking about : clubs).  That’s pretty close to 50%. ( I did this check after deciding to : respond to your post). TOO MUCH TIGER.   The Masters changed rec.sports.golf, as it has changed the entire world of golf.  I won’t deny this newsgroup has been inundated with Tiger postings because of the Masters, and you can’t honestly deny that before the Masters what Tiger traffic there was here did match those numbers I posted. At any rate, I peeked into this thread because I’m interested in the Ryder Cup and lo and behold you begin with Tiger and bash Tigermania. :Steve Elkington leads the money : list and has played well this year, yet not a single post re Elk. Couples : seems to be finding the game again…nothing.  Ryder Cup matches coming up : this fall…nada.  Tom Kite could play his way into a position on the team : if he keeps it up…not a word.  I’ve noticed people try to start other : threads that die after the first message, seemingly because it’s not about : racism or Tiger.  Tell you what, I’ll start off now. Why whine and moan about Tiger if what you’re truly interested in is discussing Ryder Cup? : NEW THREAD START- Ryder Cup Questions : Tom(s) Watson and Kite both played well during the Masters last week.  Does : anyone think that they have a chance to make the Ryder Cup team in the : fall?  Will either of them win this season? Who will be the second on the : points list (we already know who will likely be first and this thread is : NOT about him)? There you go again.  Thou does protest too much. : Who might make logical choices for the Captain’s Picks? : Does anyone think Faldo will earn his way onto the Euro Team, or will Seve : pick him.  Will Seve pick himself? What about Olazabal? Can he come back : from injury to earn a spot? : Frankly, I think the US will have a tough time getting the Cup back.  The : Euro’s will likely have several players with RC experience, the US fewer : (as it stands right now). : — : : I love Tiger Woods and what he has done for the game. But, the discussion : : about him has taken over this group. Thank you for your contribution to the Tiger discussion fund. – Young

: Give it a few more weeks and the novelty will have worn off for the Masters : champ. Do you mean Aussies in the Ryder Cup?  That’s what the President’s Cup is for.  Should the Ryder Cup and President’s Cup merge their competitions? I don’t think so, as long as both events are competitive, and they definitely are.  Give the President’s Cup a little time to make history and tradition. : The Ryder competition gets your motor running if you are a real golf fan, : be it American or European (which I am neither). : Just the opportunity to see pressure golf at its best provides us with a : view of how the game can really be played. : Canadian (proud of it) but more importantly a golfer and real fan. You know, I always had the impression that Seve’s ego was big enough that he would pick himself, but I may be wrong on that. I’ll have to watch him more closely. I think it’s interesting that Nick Faldo may not make the team.  Consider, with Seve as captain, Olazabal has a very good chance of being one of the captain’s picks (because I would be suprised to see him qualify with only a few months to do so).  Then there is always someone else who is playing well in Europe who doesn’t qualify, but is on a hot streak.  That kind of leaves Faldo out in the cold.  He may very well be chosen, but I don’t think he can count on it like he could in ‘95. Looking at the US list is somewhat disconcerting…Mark Brooks, Kenny Perry, Steve Jones (well maybe not, but…) and Jeff Maggert?  Except for Brooks, the one redeeming quality of the selection process (qualifying process) is that if Perry, Jones and Maggert don’t pick their games up, they will be passed by players who have.  Payne Stewart could make the team.  Remember in ‘93 he had played horribly during ‘92, but came out at the beginning of the season with the express purpose of making the Ryder Cup team and played well enough to do so.  Seems early on this year that he’s in the same mindset. I would also like to see Freddy qualify so that Kite wouldn’t have to pick him.   He’s a good Ryder cupper, but considering his record in 96-97(so far), it could be controversial to make him a pick. certified: TFT (I liked that, hehehe!) — "DOS Computers manufactured by companies such as IBM, Compaq, Tandy, and millions of others are by far the most popular, with about 70 million machines in use wordwide. Macintosh fans, on the other hand, may note that cockroaches are far more numerous than humans, and that numbers alone do not denote a higher life form."       (New York Times, November 26, 1991) : :
