Question:
During a discussion among the club’s membership board at St. Andrews in 1858, one of the members pointed out that it takes exactly 18 shots to polish off a fifth of Scotch. Exactly? A "fifth" of liquor is a fifth of a gallon (approximately), but actually it’s 750 ml. 750 / 18 = 41.47 ml, or 1.4 oz. A shot is 1.5 oz. There are really 19 shots in a fifth. Yea, that’s correct. It leaves one for the walk back.
And that, my friends, is how the 19th "hole" was invented. Or at least it’s a good rumor.

Akshally, that would make it 17, not 19? I mean, 1.4*18/1.5=16.8? Yea, that’s correct. It leaves one for the walk back.

Went out for a wee dram last night. Got hit by a beer mugger, I think. Anyhow, woke up this morning with a massively throbbing head and a hundred dollars missing from my wallet…

That’s funny – I got drunk last night, kicked the hell out of some guy, and have an extra hundred in my wallet this morning.

There are really 19 shots in a fifth. A nice fit, but you seem to be referring to a US gallon. That isn’t what the drinkers and golfers of old St Andrews would have used. It doesn’t work for imperial measurements, and it’s waaaay out for Scotch measurements (used before the imperial standards were introduced).

The trick is to aim for the middle ball of the five until the turn; then it’s the second from the left of the seven. Todd <– heard about it once or twice Prof. Rev. I recently got an email that contained: Why do full-length golf courses have 18 holes, and not 20, or 10 or an even dozen? During a discussion among the club?s membership board at St. Andrews in 1858, one of the members pointed out that it takes exactly 18 shots to polish off a fifth of Scotch. By limiting himself to only one shot of Scotch per hole, the Scot figured a round of golf was finished when the Scotch ran out. Is that true?
No. http://www.snopes.com/sports/golf/18holes.htm Or: On: 1995/07/18 According to the "THE HISTORY OF GOLF", during the 15th century the original St. Andrews course consisted of 11 holes in a rather straight line away from the clubhouse. After the completion of the eleventh hole, the player just turned around and played the same holes backwards. In 1764, it was determined the first and last hole of the original 11 were too short and were incorporated with the 2nd and 10th holes bringing the outward holes to 9. Accordingly, the inward holes also numbered nine. Thus the 18 holes. It should be mentioned, between 1842 and 1870, 7 of the then present greens were enlarged to accomodate the inward players from hitting into the outward players. Since that time, St. Andrews has but 11 greens, the following being double: 2 & 16, 3 & 15, 4 & 14, 5 & 13, 6 & 12, 7 & 11, 8 & 10.

I think I’ll stick with 10, 12, or 15. I just tried the 21 yr. Port Wood about a month ago and wasn’t thrilled…..especially for the price.
