Who's the worst putter on the tour?

Question:

If i we’re there it would still be Tiger Woods.

RUN KORDELL! RUN! DEY GONNA GET YA!

Response:

I should be so lucky as to be equal the the worst putter on tour.  You here all kinds of stories about how bad some of them are, like Watson, Faldo, and the latest pro who’s in a slump.  Hell, they all putt great day in and day out.  It’s just that when you compare them to who’s hot on tour do they look bad. Think about the best putting day you’ve had in the last year.  Well, that’s about how these guys are day in and day out.  They all putt lights out. Sure, every now and then they get into a rut.  The worst scoring average out there is 73.86 for Chip Beck (#187 on tour).  And that’s on real tough golf courses.  You won’t average that for the year without putting.  (#185 is Keith Nolan at 73.00) I still believe that the average golfer has never played with anyone that is as good a putter, as the worst tour pro.

Response:

Dan, Just to clarify, Billy Ray is ranked #187 in putting average, which is not exactly the same as being the "worst" putter on TOUR. Alot of factors are in play when figuring who deserves the subjective "worst" label.  In Billy Ray’s case, he also ranks 133rd in greens in regulation, so it’s safe to assume he’s not hitting many iron shots close to the hole when he does hit the greens.  The shorter putts resulting from chips from off the green don’t factor in, since the putting average is computed only on greens hit. I think if I were going to ascribe a "worst" label on someone, I’d look for a combination of a high percentage of greens hit and a low ranking in the putting average.  Then you’d get a little better sense of who’s not getting the ball in the hole, even when they’re giving themself alot of chances for birdies. Interestingly, a friend of mine who once played on TOUR made a curious observation once.  He suggested that there are good BIRDIE putters, and good PAR putters.  Some guys can pour ‘em in from anywhere for birdie.  Others can’t buy a birdie, but they practically NEVER three-putt, even when the par putt is from 10 or 12 feet.  It’s an interesting concept. Me?  I’m one of the best damn bogey putters you’ll ever see.  ;-) Randy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – From a purely numbers point of view it is Billy Ray Brown, who averages 1.865 putts per GIR. The Tour leader is Rick Fehr, with 1.722 per GIR. Not what I would call a hugh difference. And I don’t think either player has won a tournament this year. Good Golf Dan Just trying to figure out who the worst putter is on the PGA tour.  Any ideas?

I never leave a double bogey putt short! Corky — "Golf, in short, is a sort of Gargantuan jugglery, a prodigious prestidigitation, a Titanic thimble-rigging, a mighty     legerdemain." -Arnold Haultain "CHECK SIX"

Response:

Watson

Response:

It use to be Singh, amazing what that grip did for him, he was pathetic at Doral two years ago. I’d say Watson makes me the most nervous , but pick anyone on the bottom of the money charts , and there putting put them there. Red

Response:

Watson

Nick Faldo…although almost every bit of his game has gone to seed in the last three years, his putting is by far the worst of any of the pros.

Limiting the names to those who either can actually win or occasionally do win I’ll nominate Hal Sutton.  From tee-green Hal has been for years a top ball striker and accurate with both long and short clubs.  But he wins about once every 3-4 years. {BTW, for a couple of years Phil Mickelson hasn’t been knocking the ball in the cup with high effiency either.} Lest we forget, almost ALL touring pros are at least good putters – the range is from good to superb!
