Question:
It seems to me that I read somewhere that the first bunkers were created by sheep lying behind dunes to escape the wind. I have done some looking through books I have but cannot come up with anything to substantiate this. Maybe I’m just dreaming. If anyone has a reference about sheep on golf courses, I would appreciate hearing them. Thanks, Bruce RSG Roll Call: http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/newmanb.htm
Response:
I can’t offer a reference, but do know what we call bunkers have been called "sheep huddles" in Scotsland.

Response:
When I was in Ireland last year, I played a (gorgeous) links course called Connemara. They told me that, for the first few years (it was built in 1970, IIRC), sheeps were taking care of mowing, except that every green had a fence to protect it from them. — Ciao. What do you suppose they did for greens BEFORE we had mechanical mowers…? ]]]Z[[[
