Out of control kids at the range-My rant of the day

Question:

I went to the driving range on Sunday to take advantage of the break in the weather.  The driving ranges here are all located in what I would call "family fun centers".  They have miniautre golf, bumper boats, arcade games, go carts, etc. It seems that some parents think it’s okay to let their kids run around these places unsupervised.  It is extremely annoying when I am working on my game (and boy does it need work!) next to 3-4 kids playing Happy Gilmore.   One woman was letting her son, who appeared to be 3-4 years old, out onto the range to pick up balls, a good 20-30 yards out.  One sh*nk from someone and that kid could have been killed.  The management at this place does nothing. And it is not one place in particular, they all seem to have the same lack of crowd control. Thank you for allowing me to vent my frustrations :) On the range where I live one guy brought his 4-5 yr old son. While the old man drove balls on the range, his kid imitated him with a kiddie club on the practice green. Only problem was the kid didn’t have any balls to hit, so he contented himself by whacking away at the grass with the club, digging up huge divots. The old man would turn around once in a while and tell his kid to stop, but most of the time he ignored the kid (who continued merrily ruining the only putting green there). When I finally yelled at the kid to cut it out, his old man got pissed at me ! Steve

Response:

Hit the kid! I can hit an umbrella from 20 yards 1 out of 5 times and sometimes it will even stay inside.  How much could it hurt?  Legally lack of supervision as such is regarded as child endangerment and that is a whole different can of worms.  Me myself might just grab the cell phone and report it to my friend at child protection.

Hit the Kid?  Are you a retard.  How many brains might it possess to even think of this, let alone post it.  Kids have fun, that is what they do.  I have often taken my son to the range and fortunately, he understands that he is either to watch or stay behind the ropes and do all the imitating he wishes. If the children are there with an adult, as they should be, it is the ignorance of the adult that allows a child to stray into the range. Rethink your position Mike and tell me you were drunk when you thought of posting such an absurd comment. Ref.

A place called a fun center I would imagine would be well removed from the comportment of a golf course. The folks working there probably have no vested interest in the place. I would find out the owners and inform them of the risky behavior taking place: First the Happy Gilmore kids no doubt pose some threat. We all hear stories about people getting killed with a clubhead on someone’s careless backswing. Second the kid running out to pick up balls is a clear hazard. I’m not a fan of our incredibly litigious society, but might as well make it work. I think it would be easy to point out to the owners that they have a lawsuit waiting to happen. As to the other distractions, those can work in your favor. If you can concentrate there. You can concentrate anywhere. In a way its good to see kids getting into the game. I have two nephews who loved Happy Gilmore (Ok being a Terry O’Reilly fan, I admit I got a chuckle out of it) They developed some interest in golf from that, but be sure that their father explained that Happy Gilmore is not a golf role model. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I went to the driving range on Sunday to take advantage of the break in the weather. John: I live 12.000 km from you (Pergamino, Argentina)  but I have the same problem, in my case is a gentleman (68)  that  "help" the ranger to pick the balls, so he is continually moving in front of me. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I went to the driving range on Sunday to take advantage of the break in the weather. Gee, do none of the golf courses in your area have driving ranges?  You’d find alot less of this kind of goings-on there. Randy

Randy, You are right.  The course is 25 minutes away and the "fun center" is 5 minutes.  I go to the course when I can, but when I am squeezed for time it is off to the fun center.  I will not return to the one I went to on Sunday, not just because of the kid problem, but because the balls are so worn out that they wobble and do nosedives in the air.   When I go to the range at the course, I find myself very tempted (often giving in) to get in a quick 9 because the range is right next to the first tee.  So if any of my golfing buddies are going out to play, I will usually end up joining them. — John in NJ Email reply: replace "phi1232" with "jtbigg"

This idiotic movie was one of the worst things ever for the world of golf. Many kids actually think like this!

I have to agree with you there.. My team practices at a driving range/pitchandputt/minaturegolf and kids running around everywhere. I play for highschool so Im always tinkering with my game and cant concentrate with all that ruckus going on…Atleast at my range, when they run out on the range to get balls, they get a warning and then they’re kicked out…Good system so far.

I’ve observed the following too.  Where are you in NJ?  I live in Bucks County and there is a range near here where they are at least strict about not letting anybody out onto the range.  Have you been to the range in Flemington, I’ve been there a few times too and never observed any problems, but there didn’t seem to be any kids there at the time, so I can’t vouch for how they are when kids are around.  If you’re near central Bucks County, PA let me know.  Maybe we can get together sometime. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I went to the driving range on Sunday to take advantage of the break in the weather.
