Question:
Does anyone have any experiences in playing courses in Nova Scotia, specifically the courses in or around Cap Bretons? I am considering a vacation there in Sep staying at the Sea & Golf Chalets (www.SeaGolfChalets.com) and playing the Le Portage Golf Club in Cheticamp, NS. It seems like a great place for 7-8 days of golf and sight seeing along the coasts. Please respond with e-mail in addition to a post. Thanks, Bill in Dayton, OH —

Bill, I don’t know the Le Portage Golf Club in Cheticamp, but the Highland Links is one of my all-time favorite golf courses–top 5 for sure. A new course in Cape Breton is Bell Bay in Baddeck and there is also Dundee Resort. In my opinion only… Highland Links: unbelievably natural. Stanley Thompson design with infrequently seen mounding. Restored to original design in 1996. Heavily wooded and a good hike if you are a walker. A wonderful course where you will hit all your clubs. Dundee Resort: A good course and enjoyable to play, although some holes overly penal, I feel. Heavily wooded. Some great scenery. Bell Bay: Just 2-3 years old. Although I haven’t played this yet, I understand it is a top notch, championship course and should definitely not be missed. Have a great vacation and feel free to write if I can help further. BTW, Cape Breton is a wonderful place for hiking and/or biking if you are into that. Be sure to travel the Cabot Trail. I enjoyed Dundee a great deal. Played it in ‘95 while honeymooning – we were just driving and saw the sign. We needed a place to stay so we followed the road signs until we found it. I hopped out of the car, unloaded some stuff, grabbed the clubs and heading out as a single late in the day. I walked it with my new bride (she only walked 9 holes – didn’t know it was so hilly) and it was magnificent. My only complaint would be the unnecessarily severe slopes on some of the greens. Since I was only goofing around, I had some putts where I must have played ten balls and none of them even sniffed the cup. But if I was in the area again, I would certainly stop there and play. Regrettably, I didn’t’ play Highland Links (it was our honeymoon, after all) but I did manage Crowbush Cove. There I got paired with an orthopedic surgeon from NB and we has an absolute blast. He’d played there many times and was very enthusiastic about it being my first time on the course. It was a real treat. — Parabolic Golf Custom Fitted Clubs and Repairs Waterloo, ON Canada http://www.parabolicgolf.com
