Nebraska golf recommendation please

Question:

: I’m going to Omaha, NE for a wedding this Labor Day weekend and would : like to play.  My goal is to play in all 50 states, and I’m pretty sure : this will be my only shot at Nebraska.  Would love to play Sand Hills, : but Mullen appears to be a long way from Omaha. : Any recommendations on good course in the Omaha area (say within a 90 : minute drive) would be much appreciated. I visit Omaha once or twice each summer, and play golf almost every day. If you only have a day or two to play, and want the most scenic courses, I’d recommend Quary Oaks or Woodland Hills, both about 25-40 minutes from Omaha.  QO was best new affordable course in Golf Digest a few years ago. Don’t expect to score well, but it’s a beautiful course.  It’s very tight and treed (like Bay Hills, see below), but it’s a great design with neat green complexes, and every hole is almost totally alone in the forest. Woodland Hills is built on an old tree farm, and you’ll find it hard to believe you’re in Nebraska. Indian Creek and Tiburon are two of the nicest modern courses in the Omaha area. I also like Benson Park, Applewood and Pacific Springs (short).  Played Tregarin once, and it’s a nice links style course. If you can get on somehow, Firethorn in Lincoln is excellent!  It was ranked the best in Nebraska until Sand Hills was built. Someone recommended Buccaneer Bay/Bay Hills in Plattsmouth.  I played there last summer.  It was fun, but it’s too weird to be considered serious golf.  There’s no real design, it’s just a bunch of holes cut through a densely treed forest.  Very very narrow.  Miss the "fairway" by a few feet and you’re in the trees or brush.  Many holes have severe slopes, and it’s near impossible to keep your ball on the course.  It’s also VERY hilly.  My friend and I walked it (die hards!!), and the folks in the pro shop were amazed.  We were beat at the end of the round, it was more like hiking than golf. Hi there,     My home course here in Omaha is Indian Creek.  It’s in Northwest Omaha right at the edge of Elkhorn Nebraska.  It’s 27 holes with a pretty good layout and is well maintained for a public course.   $30 – $40 with cart on the weekends.    Another good choice would be Tiburon in Southwest Omaha. Also 27 holes in usually very good shape at about the same price.    In Eagle Nebraska (about 40 minutes outside of Omaha), there is a course called Woodland Hills.   It’s a more mature course with lots of trees, great views, and bent grass fairways.    A little more expensive, but it’s a pretty good challenge, and they have GPS equipped carts which are kind of fun.   I think that course has been listed in a list of top 100 courses in Golf Digest a few years ago.   Omaha is very much a "golf town" so I would bet you will enjoy playing here. <Dan

Landscapes Unlimited, the industry’s premier golf course construction company, owns a couple of excellent courses in the Omaha area: Champions Club Pacific Springs Landscapes Unlimited will be opening the following courses in Nebraska in the next two years: Deer Creek – Omaha (opening June 01, 2000) Arbor Links – Nebraska City (planned for 2000/2001) Hope this helps. Seve – Mullen is a good five or six hours from Omaha – In the Omaha area  there are a good many affordable excellent courses. One that comes to mind is Buccaneer Bay/Bay Hills in Plattsmouth (just south of the Big O). The original nine there (now the front nine) had the highest slope rating in Nebraska at one time. It’s not a tremendously long course but hilly, sometimes narrow requiring right to left, left to right shots and some slippery greens in the dry season. Lots of overgrown ravines and OB areas. There’s also some very good old established Omaha Parks courses like Benson and other newer courses around the area. I’ve heard of a course west of Omaha in Gretna or Fremont? that wast built around a gravel pit area. Supposed to be tough as nails. Tibburon is a premier course. Lot’s of good stuff there and it’s usually cheap! I was spoiled growing up in the area – no I’m not a Husker! I grew up over on the Iweagen side of the river where living is good an there’s some decent golf over threre too! Check out Treynor Golf Club, Dodge Park in Council Bluffs. After living in Northen Illinois for 12 years it would be nice to have access to some less expensive, quality golf courses. Hope this helps you out! Ed
