Question:
It sure ain’t a problem here! We are on the Gulf (of Mexico) coast so you’d think tropical. But it’s more like the desert meets the ocean. That’s why are fairways are thin strips of green, and the rough is thin, burned grass and dirt! <snip Rain. This is the damn rainiest place I’ve ever seen. And I’ve lived in Portland, Oregon, so that’s saying something. According to one almanac I checked, there are more rain days a year hear than in Portland (the Ducks get more inches of rain, but we get droplets more often). Yet every time I turn on the TV and the weatherman is talking about the next round of precipitation, he always refers to it as, "this MUCH NEEDED rain." How the hell can we need rain? It rains every damn week here!!! Back in Texas, we’d go for MONTHS without a drop! Yes, we had an uncharacteristically dry winter (or so they tell me), but it’s still rained every damn week. <snip And the forecast for tomorrow? We’re supposed to get some much-needed rain.
Randy: Are you sure you’re not in Olympia, Washington? Now, *that’s* a place that gets some rain–much more than Portland or Seattle. And when it rains there, it freakin’ rains……for days…….people have their own personal arks. They don’t have too many flooding problems in Olympia, but it sure gets depressing after awhile. I’ll bet the suicide rate is pretty high in that area. Your angst reminds of the spring season we had around here in 1999. We had a wonderful winter. I played every weekend down in my Palm Springs of the Northwest–Clarkston, Washington–in the Snake River valley. Now granted it was in the 40s and some days we had wind, but as far as winter golf goes around here it was a pretty darn good "off season" for us golfers weather-wise. But what goes around…. Spring ‘99 here was unbelievable. Rain. Wind. Snow. Sleet. Hail. The first round I played at my home course in mid-March started off windy and pretty cold. By the 4th hole we were getting snowed on. By the 10th hole we were at the diner getting some soup and watching the NCAA tournament trying to get the feeling back in our fingers and toes. March/April–"ok, it’s early spring, and the weather is usually weird this time of year. I can deal with that." late April/early May–still freakin’ cold with a few good days thrown in–except for the days I want to go golfing, of course. late May/June–"What the ?*$%! is going on here???!!!! Global warming–my butt!" WE HAD SNOW IN JUNE!!!!! Now granted we didn’t get a lot of precip, but man was it cold……and windy. Yuk. Decent weather did not start until the about the 2nd week of June. They call it El Nino or La Nina. I call it El Crappo. Every time it would start snowing, I’d start saying my mantra….."Well, golf season is right around the corner." Little did I know, I was on an airport runway. I know your pain, my brother. BTW, this spring has been great here. And our course has never looked better this early in the season. But I’m ready for some much-needed golf weather, just any ol’ time now.
Dallas is supposed to be in the mid 80’s by Friday…and since Thor will be in town, it won’t rain while we are playing…. There is still room for you!

You are right there Cyril. I’ve never been to Vancouver yet that it hasn’t rained for 98% of the week. I think I’ve only seen the mountains twice and then only for a few minutes before it started to rain again!!
I must have been lucky then, 3 weeks in Vancouver and only two days with some light rain. As for London England well its peeing down, as I look out of my window, and its has been peeing down for about 4 days but usually London isn’t too bad. Now Manchester on the other hand… it is well known that Mancunians have webbed feet.:-) Crispin Roche (London England)

You were really lucky then Crispen. I believe last year (summer) was their wettest on record. I know when I was out there it was raining and since I usually have to call there at least three times a week – every time I asked about their weather – it was raining!!! I was in Scotland Dec 3 – 13 last year – rain every day and again Jan28 – Feb 14 rain every day!!! With all this talk of rain – you guessed it – it’s raining here today!!! It’s MUCH NEEDED, though, Randy!!! :-) David — RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/sneddond.htm

Y’know, I spent twenty-five years in Texas, mostly in DFW. Then, two years in Atlanta before moving 100 miles north to this sleepy little hamlet known as Chattanooga. Before I moved here, the only thing I knew of it was that they had a train here. "Pardon me boys, is that the Chattanooga Choo-Choo?" The next thing I learned is that golf is pretty darn cheap here. Plenty of nice courses, and a steal to play. I’m very lucky. Next thing I noticed is that this is a horrible golf town. Nobody plays. They’re busy on Saturdays watching their beloved Volunteers play football, so the courses don’t even fill up on the weekends, at least during the fall. And if there’s so much as a hint of rain, the courses are empty. So what’s to bitch about? Rain. This is the damn rainiest place I’ve ever seen. And I’ve lived in Portland, Oregon, so that’s saying something. According to one almanac I checked, there are more rain days a year hear than in Portland (the Ducks get more inches of rain, but we get droplets more often). It rains every damn week here!!! Back in Texas, we’d go for MONTHS without a drop! Yes, we had an uncharacteristically dry winter (or so they tell me), but it’s still rained every damn week. There for a while, we were in a particularly maddening cycle, where it would be sunny and 60-65 every day all week, then it would rain on the weekend. Need I tell you how that affected my outlook on life? It’s a little better now — we’ve had several weekends in a row where I’ve actually gotten to play ONE day out of the weekend. Then, on either Saturday or Sunday, we get more of this "much needed" rain. Well, today the sky finally opened up on us. 18-wheelers were jacknifed all over this sleepy hamlet, and the traffic backup was like Atlanta (which, if you’ve never been there, is even worse than L.A., no kidding). As I type this, cars are being swept away all over town by flash floods, and I was barely able to navigate the .8 miles from work to my home this evening. (I left my fins at home, or I would have swam.) The golf courses where I play are no doubt underwater (flood plain), and probably won’t be playable by the weekend. And the forecast for tomorrow? We’re supposed to get some much-needed rain. Thank you. I feel better now. But I’m ready for some much-needed golf weather, just any ol’ time now. I think I’ve only seen the mountains twice and then only for a few minutes before it started to rain again!! The UK is the worst though – I have been over there twice in the past few months and I’ve seen more rain in the time I was there than we have had in SW Ontario for 18 months!!! Mind you I was in Scotland which tends to get more rain than SW England, but enough already!! With the Great Lakes being so low, the local rivers and streams are extremely ow for this time of year and I fear there will be a serious water shortage this summer. My greatest fear is that they might forbid watering of golf courses – now that is a disaster in any decent person’s mind. David — RSG Roll Call http://u1.netgate.net/~kirby34/rsg/sneddond.htm
