Las Vegas runners?

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Here is the link for the Las Vegas Track Club.  On their site they have a page for places to run with some very good suggestions.  They also have a complete race schedule for the next couple months, so you might check out one of the races.  You can run on the Strip but its best done very early in the morning before the crowds wake up, its also not very scenic, so it would not be my first choice.  You can always run on the streets anywhere in town, but some places the traffic can be a hazzard.   Don’t worry about getting lost, you can see the Stratosphere Tower from anywhere in town, so if the worst happens just head in that direction and you will find the Strip again.  If you want a scenic and somewhat hard run (lots of hills) take a trip out to Red Rock Park – it has a 13 mile loop that will give you a serious workout. http://www.lvtc.org/ Bruce Las Vegas Thanks, Bruce. It looks like there is a 5k race the weekend I’m going to be there. While I’m definitely not prepared for racing, it might be a fun run to do. Races are always nice to meet folks. Thanks.   Ed

Hey Bruce, any chance you might be running the Dream 5k this weekend? I’m signed up. Drop me an email if anyone else is running this race.    Ed

Ed – No, not this week – other obligations (life gets in the way). besides, my training has been so spotty in the recent past that I don’t believe I could finish a 5k right now.  After my last Marathon (Washington DC, March 2002) I went through about 18 months of no training and a lot of eating, so I ended up in terrible shape – unable to climb even one flight of staris without a rest and up to about 280 lbs – so in the fall I started walking  and in december some run/walk. along with dieting – now I’m at about 240 and sble to run/walk at about a 12 min/mile pace.  I’m looking at the local race schedule and should be racing (very slowly) sometime in February. FWIW the course that race is on is where I set my 5k pr.  Its nothing more than an around the block course on city streets, but it ends with a downhill grade (not steep, but steady) that lasts for almost 3/4 mile.  If you have anything left at that point, just gut it out and finish fast.  If the past is a good indicator, this should be a smallish race – not more than a couple hundred runners and pretty low key.   Good Luck. I make it  a realy habit to run the Vegas 5K 4th of July Race. The desert is great to run in, nice smooth dirt. There is a vegas running club. See http://www.lvtc.org/race-index.htm Bring water. Bob – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Bruce, When the weather is chilly do they permit wood fires in the fireplaces/woodstoves? I recall seeing on the news that Nevada is much tougher than other states with regards to woodsmoke pollution. Just wondering… One of the pleasures of outdoor exercise in the winter for me is the tangy scent of wood smoke in the crisp air. I love it. Teresa Teresa, I’m not a fireplace person – had one for five years in my last apartment and never used it – but,  I know that I smell wood smoke in the neighborhood when I go out for a run, so I assume that wood is permitted.  My parents had a gas fireplace in their apartment and that seemed like a much better choice to me.  When I lived in colder climates I discovered that the wood fire choked me.  As soon as the fireplace was lit I felt like I couldn’t breathe anymore – just like being smothered.  Spent over $300 a month on electric heat that year. I can’t tell you how much I hate the cold, so Vegas, even with yeaterday’s snow, is fine for me.  BTW the cold was quite transient – when  I rode the motorcycle to the gym today, I rode in shorts, not jeans and was not excessively cold. The 4th of july (2002) 5k was the last race I ran.  My hip hurt so bad that I turned in a Personal Worst and had to stop training for a while.  Then My doc said I had to ge tthe blood paresure under control so I stopped everything for a while.  I have finally given up the slothful life and started training again.  perhaps by the 4th of july I will be racing again.  I have to turn in a better time than last time. I’ll be in Vegas in 6 weeks for a bit. Any running clubs in that city? I’ll need to keep on track for my spring marathon. Any info you can share as to clubs and running routes would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Niagara Boy — "I run so I do not lose the me I was yesterday and the me I might become tomorrow."

I will be there in a couple weeks during the MLK weekend. If no suggestion about running clubs, are there suggestions on areas good for running. I assume there are usually too many people on The Strip to make cruising there any good. Ed (guess If no one answers, I’ll let you, Niagara Boy, know what I find out.)

Response:

If you have the time and wheels, try driving to some nearby desert parks. I recommend Red Rocks, the Valley of Fire, Lake Powell. I’ve run on Mt. Anderson too. These parks avoid the urban congestion and have great scenery. In the winter you gnerally avoid the stiffling heat.

Vegas just had snow, so be prepared for all possible weather situations. It’s not always beautiful in the winter! Teresa

My folks are in Vegas, and when I’m there I have run on Golf Courses (there must be a million of ‘em there), but try to go when they’re not teeing off! Fore!  Be prepared for dry, icy air — take lip balm for sure!

Its true that we had snow yesterday, but by noon it was mostly gone and the weather was about 45f.  today its supposed to be 55f, so the weather for the New Years Eve fireworks should be great.  this is the first snow we have had in several years and it only laster a couple hours.  However, if you want to ski, Lee Canyon Ski area is only 45 minutes away.
