Hawaii Golf recommendations

Question:

I am planning a Hawaiian vacation and hope to do a reasonable amount of golfing. I’d like some recommendations from the group. I’ve seen costs from $7 to $200 per round. We will probably be staying on the smaller islands (Maui, Kauai, Molokai). If anyone knows of special packages or services there, that would be appreciated, too. Thanks, David

Response:

There are many wonderful resort packages on Kauai as I’m sure there are on the other islands. I personally like the Kiahuna Plantation on the south shore of Kiuai. It is a townhouse resort that is immaculate both inside and out with a small beach of it’s own. It has a Robert Trent Jones Jr. course and is just up the road from the Poipu Bay Resort course that the PGA Grand Slam is played on. Prices vary with the course and the time of day ranging from about $6 for a nine hole course that is county owned to about $145 for prime morning tee times. If you want a little more detailed information about Kauai, fell free to e-mail me direct. David, Try visiting www.gohawaii.com.  You should be able to find a list of most of the golf courses on each island.  Print off the list of courses.  Then go to www.golfweb.com and use their golf course search feature to check out the latest info on each of the courses on your list.  Their information includes greens fees, course descriptions, and comments from folks who have played the courses.  I found it very useful in planning my own trip to the Big Island in March. Good luck. –BW

Response:

Absolutely play Kapalua, particularly the one that goes highest into the mountains.

That would be the Plantation Course, a Crenshaw/Coore design, I consider it to be a "must play"  if you are on Maui.   Lots of local knowledge is required but what a fun course. On the Big Island, I suggest Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea. — John in NJ Email reply: replace "phi1232" with "jtbigg"

If you stay on Kauai, look in the "This Week Kauai" or some of the other tourist magazines for the "Play a Round in Paradise" package.  It’s somewhere around $350, but it gives you a round at Poipu Bay (where they play the Grand Slam of Golf), Kauai Lagoons (Kiele or Lagoons course, Kiele is my personal favorite) and a round in Princeville at either the Makai course (former home to the LPGA Kemper Open) or the Prince (toughest course on the island).  You end up saving about $50 by buying the package.  Just bring lots of balls, particularly if you play the Prince. Of all the courses I’ve played in Hawaii, Kiele is my personal favorite followed closely by the Prince and The Plantation Course at Kapalua.  I’m going to be playing them all again in July, and hopefully adding Koolau to the list. – Ted
