Question:
Anyone know the formula for calculating a handicap index? Setting up a spreadsheet to track my progress over time. Thanks……Greg
The USGA handicap formulas can be found on the USGA’s web site at http://www.usga.org. If you are interested in using a proven software product to monitor oyur handicap index, we suggest that you visit our home page at http://www.northernsystems.com and download a 30 day evaluation copy of our Handicap Manager for Windows, U.S. Personal Edition. According to an independent rating from the Zdnet (a subsidiary of Ziff-Davis Inc, the publishers of numerous magazines including PC Magazine) our Handicap Manager for Windows is a 4 Star Editor’s Choice. You can read their glowing review of our software for yourself by following the appropriate link on our home page. We also have a personal edition which complies with the RCGA Handicap System (Canada), the Australian Handicap System (Australia), the UK (CONGU) Handicap System, and the World Golf Federation Handicap System (International). For each edition of our software, we have an agreement with the appropriate golf governing body giving us permission to use their handicap system in our software. Under our agreement with the USGA, we are required to state that the handicapping feature of the U.S. Personal Edition of Handicap Manager has been designed for use by golfers who seek to monitor their handicap issued by a golf club. You should beware of any software which is offered by a company which does not clearly state that it has the permission from the appropriate golf governing body as each of the handicap systems is the trademarked property of the appropriate governing body. In the case of systems which claim to comply with the USGA Handicap System, you may want to Handicap Manager for Windows can accommodate up to 2500 golfers, stores the most recent 1000 rounds of golf per golfer, and stores up to 255 course definitions. It also tracks many relevant statistics such as greens in regulation, fairway stats, driving accuracy, putting stats, etc if you choose to enter golf scores in detail. We also have League and Professional (club) Editions which comply with the RCGA and USGA Handicap Systems. The Canadian Professional Edition of Handicap Manager for Windows has been certified by the RCGA for use by golf courses in Canada which comply with the RCGA Handicap System. Although no equivalent certification program exists in the United States, we do have permission from the USGA to use their handicap system in our software and our U.S. Professional Edition fully complies with the USGA Handicap System. We hope this information is helpful. Sincerely, Northern Systems Inc. Quality Golf Handicapping & Statistics software since 1987

(Adjusted Gross Score – U.S.G.A. Course Rating) x (113/U.S.G.A. Slope Rating). Why set up a spreadsheet? I recommend using one of the commerically available programs. I like and use Golf Digest Scorecard 4.0.
