Question:
You can try the University of Georgia course in Athens. It’s very nice and a great value.
I would definitely recommend this course. It’s not too long, but it gives you many different short-game shots. There is one problem with this course. No beer or other alcoholic beverages are served or allowed on the premises. This is not a problem for me because I don’t drink much, but I have brought friends there and they weren’t too thrilled. —Jim
Response:
I live in Athens and completely agree that UGA G.C. is a great course. It has relatively wide fairways with mounds around the greens to make things interesting. And it is dirt cheap. You also might like Lane Creek G.C. I’ve not played there, but my brother has and he thought highly of it. Also, Jennings Mill and Athens Country Club are two local private courses. Both have great reputations, provided you can find a way to get in. If you don’t mind driving a little, Sandy Creek GC in Commerce, GA is a new track that is fairly long and has some interesting shots. It is about 25-30 mi. up Hwy 441 North. Its sister course, Hollywood Hills is about 70 mi north on 441 and is shorter but with constant strong (for around here) winds. All of these courses are very playable during the winter. In fact, the wind and "dead" ball make all of these course much more interesting. Hope you have some good luck! Paul Smart University of Georgia
