Question:
I just returned from San Diego last week and played Torrey a couple of times. If you’re with a group it’s kind of tough to get a tee time but we were able to go realy and getb on the waiting list. I got off as a single one day fairly quickly. The south course is supposed to be the tougher of the two. We could only get the North but it was alright even though they have recently done some repairs to the sprinkler system etc. If you can drive down to Mexico try Baja Mar. It’s a scenic course next to the ocean about 30 minutes drive south of Tijuana. Very nice.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – You’re quite right about the 300 miles between La Jolla and Lompoc and it’s not a nice drive either, lots of L.A. and Orange County traffic. Someone else mentioned Pelican Hill in Newport Beach. It ain’t cheap; $225.00 to $245.00 Friday – Sunday, $145.00 to $175.00 Monday – Thursday. You can see for yourself at http://www.pelicanhill.com. Using SelectTeeTimes.com I looked up Torrey Pines, both North and South and there are times available between 12/15 and 12/31 that can be booked ahead of time. cost $125.00 (through this service). I signed up (it’s free) but have never used SelectTeeTimes.com to book a tee time, so I can’t vouch for the quality of their service. There are a lot of courses within 150 miles of LA, including all those in the Cochella Valley (Palm Springs). If you do end up in San Diego Palm Springs is even closer. Also this SelectTeeTimes.com will do a tee-tim search of all the golf courses signed with their service in the San Diego area.
Take a look at Singing Hills in El Cajon, and at Cottonwood in Monte Vista. I tried them, and had a terrific experience. Good golf at affordable prices. ~~Fred

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Greetings, Seems like I’ll be visiting the Golden State for X-mas holidays, going to L.A. and perhaps San Diego. I read in a magazine that La Purisma golf course in Lompoc and Torrey Pines (South) in La Jolla are rated among the top 100 public courses in the U.S. and are one of the more affordable ones. I was wondering how difficult getting tee times is at these courses and how far in advance should I try to secure one? Basically, any tips or suggestions to ease the process would be greatly appreciated. Steve K. Lee
lompoc is at least 300 miles from san diego. and a couple hours even from LA. i heard torrey pines is hard to get t-times but if you get there around 4am you might get out as a single by about noon

Hi, Steve: Torrey Pines is considered by many to be one of the finest muni courses in the Country. The PGA Tour plays there each spring. I’m not sure how hard it is to get a tee time there, but I would call them in advance of your trip and find out. They should be able to set you up. Also, you might want to look at the excellent Pelican Hill Links north of San Diego in Newport (Orange Co.) Its a resort course, and I have heard its really great. -Larry Greetings, Seems like I’ll be visiting the Golden State for X-mas holidays, going to L.A. and perhaps San Diego. Both Torrey Pines courses are very good. The complex deservedly ranks high in the public course spectrum. The problem is that they are also host, I believe, the most number of rounds of any municipal courses in the United States. Remember that a significant fraction of the California population lives within a two hour dirve. I used to be a left coaster 20+ years ago, and they were difficult to get on then without a reservation. I do not know what their tee time reservation system is like now, but you should try to book a time ASAP. Walking on during Christmas will be very difficult. I would think you could get right on at LaPurisima, because it is pretty far removed from everything. North of SantaBarbara.
