Question:
OK, now, let me get this right…. 130,000 amateurs entered the Oldsmobile Scramble and 400 reached the finals? Hmmm….if 130,000 amateurs entered the National Mixed Team Classic 1,300 would reach the finals at Daufuskie Island Club & Resort on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. And don’t they pay an entry fee for the Oldsmobile Scramble finals? Hmmm….if you qualify in your state for the finals of The National Mixed Team Classic, there is NO entry fee for the finals. And don’t the amateurs pay their own expenses to and at the finals of the Oldsmobile Scramble? Hmmm…if you qualify for the finals of The National Mixed Team Classic, you get: airline tickets to and from Savannah; ground and water transfers to the Island; six nights lodging at the resort; one practice round and three competitive rounds of golf, with carts, playing twice at The Melrose, a Nicklaus Signature Course and twice at the Wiesskopf/Morrish designed Bloody Point; a welcoming cocktail reception and dinner; a mid-tournament cocktail reception and dinner; an awards cocktail reception and dinner; tee gifts and prizes. And you don’t jeopardize your amateur status. Which is the better deal? It is moving to Las Vegas and will be held at a course there this coming October. Thus, the crowds at WDW this year should be notably lower and around for a shorter period of time during the PGA Tour event. In the past, this mass of folks was at WDW for about two full weeks during the Scramble and Classic events, which were "back-to-back". In the past there have been about 400 Ams with the 144 Pros. There is also some indication that the event may only be played on the Palm and Magnolia courses and not on the Lake Buena Vista course, but this is not yet confirmed. The crowds should be less than in the past, and for a shorter period of time during the week of the Tour event.
Response:
Hi all, Recently there have been several posts on the groups I am posting to regarding the Disney/Oldsmobile Classic and the Oldsmobile Scramble Finals golf events, typically at WDW in October. Unfortunately there has been some confusing information coming out lately due to various versions of information on the web and elsewhere. Some of it from me. Sorry! Because I have received several e-mails from folks looking for more information, I have made several phone calls to the PGA Tour, WDW and the Scramble Hot-Line to try to figure out what the heck is going on this October. Based upon these calls, I am finally beginning to put together a picture for this October at least and perhaps for the near future. The Oldsmobile Scramble Finals, which last year attracted some 130,000 folks to the Disney Courses, will not be held at WDW this October. The Disney/Olds Classic PGA Tour event and Pro-Am will be at the Disney courses this October under a temporary new name: The Disney Classic. Oldsmobile has pulled out as prime sponsor effective immediately. Disney is looking for a new sponsor, as the purse is to be around $2 Million. According to the sources there will only be 144 Ams and 144 Pros. I hope this provides some helpful information for folks going to WDW this fall. Unfortunately information is strangely difficult to come by. The PGA Tour site (www.pgatour.com) still shows the event with Olds as a sponsor. I have also located information on the Scramble indicating it still being at WDW. Yet other information indicates that the PGA event is actually leaving WDW, as did the LPGA HealthSouth event this year (which moved to the Hyatt Grand Cypress courses). Crazy! Folks just do not seem to update their sites with correct information I guess. A few phone calls seemed to have provided more accurate data. Anyway….. Good luck to all visitors in the fall. — Marc Schwartz irc #radp-friends MarcS TDC Lord of the Disney Golf Courses, Designer of the Trimobial Sand Wedge and Keeper of the Trimobial Hole-in-Six Trophy Come visit my Walt Disney World and Golf Web Page at http://home.earthlink.net/~marcschwartz/
