courses in MD or DE?

Question:

I just got back from a weekend at O.C., and I played the Beach Club twice, both Inner and Outer Links courses. Both are very nice, but I’d give the Inner Links a slightly better grade. The Outer has some drainage problems; plenty of standing water and mud in the fairways. All the greens are immaculate, tho I never could read one correctly! I also enjoyed the Bay Club, not too far away. If you go to either of these courses, take your bug spray for afternoon play. Mosquitoes and flies are everywhere. Cass Tyson – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m going to be spending a week in Fenwick Island in Delaware and Ocean City, Maryland (also near Dewey Beach). Does anyone have any advice/recommendations of golf courses in that area.    BTW, Beach Club’s new Outer Links was getting some buzz in the pro shop; might be worth checking out.    –Coops

I second the nomination for Eagles Landing.  If you have the time, a side trip to Easton, MD and Hog Neck Golf Course is worth the trip.  Closer to Ocean City check out the Beach Club and Ocean City Golf & Yacht Club (36 holes).  Enjoy!

A great stop on the way to or from O.C.  If you only have a couple of hours, their exec course (par 32) is a gem.  Challenging layout with several carries over water.  Starter suggested I play the blues (I usually play white), and it made things even better.

Played Eagles Landing last Mon. & Wed., teeing off at about one o’clock and noon respectively.     On Mon. the first hole’s fairway had grass clippings clumped throughout.  Overall, the course conditions were ok, but the round took 5 hrs & 45 mins.  My once-a-year golf buddy shot 120 & went thru a small-bag of balls–searching for about two balls each hole, but we still waited at each tee on the group ahead. Not one Marshal passed.     Afterwards, I asked about the speed of play.  The story was due to sickness, they were short of Marshal staff.  But Wed. it was a six-hour round and there was a Marshal on the course.     For the first three holes Wednesday, the groups backed-up three deep for the first three holes.  One guy used his cell phole to call the pro-shop and complain (okay, another good reason to have a cell on the course!)     Caught sight of Mr. Marshal on #4.  You’ve seen ball-buggies at the driving range, all covered in screen to protect the driver.  That’s what Mr. Marshal was driving.  And balls were flying everywhere.  Kids and hackers of both sexes and all ages were everywhere–hey, NP if they just coulda played faster. Mr. Marshal said nothing; hell, he couldn’t even be seen thru all that netting!     I had an interesting conversation with someone on-staff after Wed’s round.  He said for the first few years they were left alone to run the course as they saw fit, and I remember several times then when a Marshal would do an effective job of keeping folks moving.  But now the course has become a "political football,"  folks write nasty letters to the Pols if they’re "bothered" by the marshals–so they say nothing now…there’s even some question if the Town of Ocean City should be in the golf course business anyway, vs. private ownership.     Hey, its a scenic, challenging and affordable public course. One of my favorites.  But they’re going thru some growing pains right now (unless 5.5-6 hr rounds don’t bother you.) Lessons for other munies.     BTW, Beach Club’s new Outer Links was getting some buzz in the pro shop; might be worth checking out.     –Coops

Response:

If you’re coming from the Baltimore-Washington area, stop at Hog Neck in Easton on the way there or back.  Excellent public course, well maintained, challenging, and an excellent par-32 executive course if you’ve only got a couple of hours.

I highly recommend Eagle’s Landing in O.C. about 45 minutes away.  DO NOT play Ocean City Golf and Yacht Club under any circumstances.  While the course is nice and challenging, our foursome was practically thrown off the course by an annoying ranger with a stopwatch who reminded us on 4 separate holes that we were not keeping pace with their 4 hour round policy.  We were between 4 and 12 minutes over pace, even though there was nobody behind us. Bitter? No, I’m not bitter.
