Cancelling Cross Country Race…Too Much Rain?

Question:

I’ve witnessed many NAIA,  Footlocker regional and even the USA Natonals in muddy, wet, rainy, snowy, cold conditions. Living only a few miles from the Midwests premeir XC course (UW-Parkside, Kenosha WI),

Ah yes, the Parkside course, that is a great site.  Add some god awful weather conditions and it will really seperate the men from the boys. Perhaps the canceled meet was to be run on the lush confines of a local golf course.  They probably would not care to put the lawn through the beating. Response:

A few years ago here in Spain we organize a XC in a winter morning with freezing cold and disgusting winds, and we found the surface covered with snow and ice at the finish area. The only thing we could do is to throw salt over that area to clear the ice, and we finished the morning covered with mud up to the hips. No cancellation, of course, the transportation was already paid! Living only a few miles from the Midwests premeir XC course (UW-Parkside, Kenosha WI), I get to see alot of highschool meets also.   If it is nasty, they are running.  We must be a tough bunch here.  Look at Lambeau Field (Green bay Packers), sold out in December always.  Not even one of the sissy dome stadiums.

Response:

In November 1985, I was on the Rutgers XC team and we had an IC4A meet (10K) at Lehigh University (Pa). We arrived the afternoon before and the conditions were absolutely perfect – clear skies, a very light breeze, and temperature in the 50’s. A teammate I was rooming with in the hotel brought a book called "The Rain King"  and I was afraid that this was a bad omen. It was.      The next morning, we awoke to a mixture of pouring rain, sleet, and wet snow and this kept up throughout the day. The race conditions were about the most miserable I’ve ever had to run in. The ground was muddy, the grass was icy and slippery, sensitive body parts froze up halfway through the race, and the times (at least on our team) were a bit less than our best.    The New Jersey high school Meet of Champions race was held the same day at Holmdel, NJ. A few months later, I was watching a high school track meet and I saw someone wearing a T-shirt saying "I survived the Ice Bowl at Holmdel" (or something like that) and I had to laugh.    I wonder if anybody else in this ng was in either of these races and remebers how much fun they were to be in.

Had a venue changed once due to waterlogging. Ended up running around a ploughed field with post-race facilities consisting of a large, muddy, puddle ;-) IanB – loved every minute! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – We do this on occasion.  Some parks/golf courses/etc that we run on will not allow us to run a race on the course if it is very soggy/muddy for fear of damage to the area.  It has nothing to do with fear of injury to the runners or ‘Johnny/Jill’ might get a cold.  It is a purely economic decision.  Run a race on a golf course or park that has ankle deep water and mud on it on Saturday and on Monday it will be unplayable/unusable. Never had it happen but I cannot remember it raining hard enough. If this is in the US, the threat and fear of lawsuits should Johnny or Jill get hurt might be an issue.

Could be, though such fears must be recent. One of the years I ran Mt. Sac it was raining heavily and the course was muddy. Nobody though to stop the race. — Planet Bog — pools of toxic chemicals bubble under a choking atomsphere of poisonous gases… but aside from that, it’s not much like Earth.

Response:

Have you seen some of the silly lawsuits in the courts?  My brother is an attorney and I read some of his law publications on the rare times I go to the home town to visit.  Amazing. Also, I think the earlier comment about not tearing up golf courses if they are running on a course is another good reason.

Haven’t sen it happen. I’ve heard that the fall of ‘97, the NCAA Div III (or was it New England’s?) race was run in ankle-high snow. The runners who ploughed through the snow were later immemorialised (right spelling/usage?) on the Seven Sisters ‘98 X-C T-shirt. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – We had a local high school cross country conference race cancelled today because of downpours all night and at race time.   Is this normal? T-shirt. Close:     immortalized – to give lasting fame.         immemorial – extending back beyond memory, ancient.

Never heard of cancelling a cross country race, for inclement weather. That’s part of x-country. Maybe they should run indoors and on a track!

not here in southern california, at least from my experience. we run rain or shine…but we don’t get much rain here anyways. We had a local high school cross country conference race cancelled today because of downpours all night and at race time.   Is this normal? Jerry

Unless it was really dangerous, I wouldn’t expect a XC race to be cancelled. I have ran in some horrendous XC race conditions  in the UK, and have only known one cancellation, due to snow, this was because nobody could. get to the venue. Tougher the better, gives you a firm foundation for the track or road race season. Character building we call it :-) Steve — http://www.wolds-veteran-rc.freeserve.co.uk Club based in Grimsby, N.E.Lincs, England.

Although my first year in Colorado the state meet got cancelled because of a sudden blizzard in October that dumped 2 feet of snow overnight (virtually) and closed highways on the Front Range.  This was more of a transportation issue although I doubt that anyone could have run in 2 feet of snow.
