Advice on Puerto Rico needed

Question:

We were considerting going to Puerto Rico during Christmas this year. We will be gone 11 days.  If anyone has any advice or recommendations about this trip we would certainly appreciate it.  We are not sure whether Puerto Rico is a pretty island or not and if there is enough to occupy 11 days.  We have free airfare there. Response:

Hi there- It’s been about 8 years since I have been in Puerto Rico, but I went twice: once for a semester at UPR and again for a week long vacation. I would say that there is certainly enough to do to fill up 11 days, depending of course on what you like to do. If you stay in the Condado area (the main resort area in San Juan) activities include: day trips to Old San Juan (shopping, museums, El Morro, etc.) day trip to Bacardi Rum Plant day trip to El Yunque Rainforest day trip to Luquillo beach golf shopping gambling restaurants water sports overnight excursion or day trip to islands of Culebra and ?? overnight excursion to the other side of the island…beautiful! Plenty!

Response:

Puerto Rico probably has more to see and do than any other Caribbean Island.  It has the most golf courses, casino hotels, best night life, museums, art gallerys, Old San Juan, best highway system,….  Contact the PR Tourism Co at 800-443-0266 for info and free publications. Let me know what your interests are and I’ll be able to make some recommendations.

Tim, Everyone has different preferences, but a few years ago we spent 10 days traveling around PR.  We rented a car and stayed in a different place every night, mostly in the paradores approved by the government.  We actually ran out of time and didn’t get to see everything we wanted. Among the highlights were the mountains and incredible vegetation, the dry southwestern side, Ponce’s wonderful firehouse, the great food, the topography on the northwest side and El Morro.  We were glad that we had some experience with 3rd world driving and a smattering of Spanish. PR is a wonderful place to visit, not real touristy once you leave San Juan. Hope you have a great trip. Marcia Andre

Tim, A great area to stay in is Western Puerto Rico.  This region is not as busy, crowded, or expensive as the northern San Juan area.  A very popular area for Americans is the Municipality of Rincon.  If you haven’t made arrangements yet, may we suggest you look at our web site at http://prwest.com.  This site is dedicated to promoting tourism in the Western Puerto Rico area. We can arrange everything for you from airport pick, to car rental, to vacation home rental, to groceries in your pantry and refrigerator, for the same cost as a cramped hotel room and car rental in the Condado area. As far as beauty, I honestly believe that there is no other place in Puerto Rico that is as beautiful, and as laid back, as Western Puerto Rico.  Uncrowded White Sand beaches, and plenty of sun!  Plus low cost of stay.  Your 11 days will not be wasted here! Write back for more information on our vacation services.  Visit our web site too! — Lou    http://prwest.com
